Tonight’s Game: The Gwinnett Stripers begin their opening seven-game homestand of 2018 tonight with game one of a four-game series vs. the Rochester Red Wings (Minnesota Twins).  In the South: Gwinnett (2-3, .400) is fourth in the International League South Division, 1.0 game behind Norfolk (1st, 3-2, .600) and a half-game behind Charlotte and Durham (T-2nd, 3-3, .500).  All-Time vs. Rochester: Gwinnett is 33-36 (.478) in 69 meetings with Rochester, and has won the season series vs. the Red Wings four times: 2009 (5-3), 2010 (5-3), 2012 (5-3) and 2015 (5-3).

Last Game: The Stripers lost 5-2 to the Durham Bulls in the finale of a three-game series last night at Durham Bulls Athletic Park. RHP Aaron Blair (L, 0-1) yielded three unearned runs on one hit and five walks over 2.2 innings LAST ROAD TRIP (2-3) before exiting due to an injury suffered while covering the plate Batting: on a run-scoring wild pitch. RHP David Peterson replaced him in .174 (27-for-155), 8 2B, 0 3B, the third inning and allowed two earned runs on five hits over 2.1 6 HR, 13 R, 12 RBI, 3 SB Pitching: innings. Gwinnett’s runs each came via the longball as CF Danny 2.74 ERA (13 ER in 42.2 IP), Santana (1-for-4, HR, R, RBI) homered off LHP Anthony Banda 21 BB, 44 SO, 4 Holds, 2 Saves in the fifth and 1B Carlos Franco (2-for-4, HR, R, RBI) homered off RHP Hunter Wood in the eighth. Banda (W, 2-0) gave up one run on five hits and struck out eight over 5.1 innings for Durham, and three Bulls’ relievers including RHP Ryne Stanek (S, 1) combined to allow a run on one hit over the final 3.2 innings.

Fantastic Franco: 1B Carlos Franco enters play in the midst of a team-best five-game on-base streak (.333 OBP), team-best four-game hitting streak (.375, 6-for-16, 1 2B, 2 HR, 3 R, 4 RBI) and team-best three-game RBI streak (4 RBI). Through five games, he leads the Stripers in batting (.316), hits (6), homers (2), runs (3), RBI (4), total bases (13), OBP (.333), SLG (.684) and OPS (1.018).

Extra, Extra: Of the Stripers’ 27 hits through five games, 14 have gone for extra bases (51.9%), including eight doubles (1 each for Ronald Acuña Jr., Rob Brantly, Jaff Decker, Carlos Franco, Rio Ruiz, Kade Scivicque, Tyler Smith and Chris Stewart) and an IL-leading six homers (2 for Franco, 1 each for Johan Camargo, Ruiz, Danny Santana and Smith). Last year’s club tallied 369 extra-base hits (219 2B, 33 3B, 117 HR) among 1,211 total hits, a Gwinnett club-record 30.5% ratio.

Rotation Recap: Stripers starting pitchers (Mike Soroka, Matt Wisler, Lucas Sims, Kolby Allard and Aaron Blair) have combined to go 1-1 with a 1.74 ERA (4 ER in 20.2 IP), a .189 BAA (14-for-74, 1 HR), nine walks and 21 strikeouts over the first five games of the season.  Allard: Making his Triple-A debut Tuesday at Durham (ND, 4.0 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 1 HR, 1 BB, 3 SO), he became the second youngest starting pitcher in GWN history (20 years, 7 months, 28 days). All Eyes on Acuña Jr.: OF Ronald Acuña Jr., rated No. 2 on MLB.com’s Top 100 Prospects list, is batting .105 (2-for-19, 1 2B, 2 R, 2 BB, 8 SO) over five games with Gwinnett following a red-hot Spring Training with Atlanta (.432, 19-for-44, 4 HR, 8 R, 11 RBI, 4 SB, 1.247 OPS in 16 games).  Breakout Season: Acuña hit .325 (181-for-557, 31 2B, 8 3B, 21 HR, 88 R, 82 RBI, 44 SB) in 139 games between Advanced-A Florida, Double-A Mississippi and Gwinnett last year, earning the 2017 Minor League Player of the Year award from both Baseball America and USA Today. He led MiLB in hits, at-bats and games while ranking third in total bases (291) and ninth in steals. Following the season, he was named MVP of the Arizona Fall League (.325, 7 HR, 16 RBI in 23G with Peoria).

Camargo on Rehab: Atlanta Braves INF Johan Camargo, on the 10-day disabled list since 3/26 with a right oblique strain, homered off Durham RHP Chih-Wei Hu in his second rehab game with Gwinnett on Tuesday (1-for-5, R, RBI). In four total games on his rehab assignment (2 with GWN, 2 with Advanced-A Florida), he is batting .125 (2-for-16, 1 HR, 1 R, 1 RBI, 2 BB, 6 SO).

Berryhill is Back: Former Atlanta Braves catcher Damon Berryhill is 73-74 (.497) in 147 games as Gwinnett’s manager since the start of 2017. Berryhill, the sixth skipper in Gwinnett’s 10-year history, has a career managerial record of 491-461 (.516) in 952 games across 10 MiLB seasons.

2017 in Review: Playing in their final season under the “Braves” moniker, the Gwinnett Braves went 71-71 (.500) to finish tied for sixth in the 14-team International League. Gwinnett finished second in the IL South Division, 15.0 games behind first-place Durham (86-56), 5.0 games ahead of third-place Norfolk (66-76) and 10.0 games ahead of fourth-place Charlotte (61-81). Though the GWN Season Records G-Braves won six more games than in YEAR RECORD PLACE 2016 (65-78), the club failed to repeat as 2009 81-63 4th 2010 72-71 7th IL South Division Champions. 2011 78-65 5th  Steady in Second: Gwinnett spent 2012 62-82 12th 135 of 152 days in second place in the IL 2013 60-84 14th South Division (3 days from 4/13-4/15, 1 2014 65-77 12th day on 4/18, 26 days from 4/25-5/20, 105 2015 77-67 T-5th days from 5/23-9/4). Vs. Rochester: Making his second Triple-A start, Soroka will face the Red Wings for the first time in his career tonight.

Prospect Watch: Entering 2018, Soroka was rated Atlanta’s No. 3 prospect and the No. 27 prospect in baseball by Baseball America, and No. 3 in the Braves organization and the No. 31 prospect in baseball by MLB.com.

MLB Spring Training: He appeared in three games with Atlanta as a nonroster invitee this spring, going 0-0 with a 1.80 ERA (1 ER in 5.0 IP) and a .125 BAA (2-for-16, 0 BB, 4 SO) before being assigned to minor league camp on 3/9.

About 2017: Soroka earned the Braves’ Phil Niekro Award for Minor League Pitcher of the Year and was named Mississippi’s Pitcher of the Year after going 11-8 with a 2.75 ERA (47 ER in 153.2 IP) over 26 starts. He ranked among Southern League pitching leaders in ERA (2nd, 2.75), BB/9.0 IP for starters (2nd, 1.99), WHIP (3rd, 1.09), innings pitched (4th, 153.2), fewest baserunners/9.0 IP for starters (4th, 10.37) and wins (T-4th, 11).  Strong Stretch: He won five consecutive starts between 5/12-6/5, posting a 2.01 ERA in 31.1 IP (8 R, 7 ER, 24 H, 1 HR, 8 BB, 29 SO).  Player of the Month: Soroka was named M-Braves Pitcher of the Month for June after going 3-1 with a 0.79 ERA (3 ER in 34.0 IP, 1 HR, 4 BB, 21 SO).  Futures Game: He was selected to the MLB All-Star Futures Game on 7/9 in Miami, where he pitched for the World Team (1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 SO).

Career Highlights: Entering 2018, Soroka is 20-19 with a 2.91 ERA (107 ER in 330.2 IP) over 61 career games (59 starts) in the Braves system.  Selected by the Atlanta Braves in the first round (28th overall) of the 2015 June draft out of Bishop Carroll High School (Calgary, Alberta, Canada).  Started his career in 2015, going 0-2 with a 3.18 ERA (12 ER in 34.0 IP) over 10 games (9 starts) between the GCL and Rookie-level Danville.  Spent all of 2016 with Class-A Rome, going 9-9 with a 3.02 ERA (48 ER in 143.0 IP) in 25 games (24 starts)…went at least 7.0 innings six times (5-0, 1.70 ERA)…was named a South Atlantic League Midseason All-Star after posting a 2.92 ERA (23 ER in 71.0 IP) in 13 first-half games.  Made a pair of postseason starts with Rome in 2016 and surrendered just one earned run over 14.2 innings (0.61 ERA, 14 H, 1 BB, 10 SO), helping the club to the South Atlantic League championship.
