The Stripers, unveiled to the public on 12/8/17, are the first Atlanta Braves-owned team to have its own unique identity and branding.  All-Time vs. Norfolk: Gwinnett is 106-88 (.546) in 194 prior meetings with Norfolk, and has won the season series vs. the Tides seven times in nine years: 2009 (11-10), 2010 (11-10), 2011 (14-7), 2014 (11-10), 2015 (12-10), 2016 (17-6) and 2017 (13-10).

Opening Statement: Since moving to Lawrenceville from Richmond, VA in 2009, the Gwinnett franchise is 5-4 in season openers, including 3-2 at Coolray Field and 2-2 on the road.  Last Season: Gwinnett fell 10-8 to the Durham Bulls on GWN on Opening Day 4/6/17 at Coolray Field. Starter Aaron Blair (L, 0-1) and reliever DATE OPP. RESULT Joel De La Cruz combined to allow 10 runs over the first four 4/9/09 @ CHA W, 9-1 innings as the G-Braves fell behind 10-4. SS Johan Camargo 4/8/10 vs. CHA W, 8-6 (3-for-4, HR, 4 RBI) and LF Adam Brett Walker (1-for-5, HR, 4/7/11 vs. DUR W, 2-1 RBI) each blasted home runs off Bulls’ starter Jacob Faria, but 4/5/12 @ DUR L, 3-4 reliever Justin Marks (W, 1-0) followed with 1.2 scoreless 4/5/13 vs. CHA W, 5-4 innings to hold Durham’s six-run lead. Gwinnett scored twice in 4/3/14 @ DUR L, 6-7 the seventh and ninth innings before falling short. 4/9/15 vs. DUR L, 0-1  Opening at Harbor Park: Gwinnett has opened the season 4/7/16 @ NOR W, 2-0 at Norfolk’s Harbor Park once before, on 4/7/16. The G-Braves 4/6/17 vs. DUR L, 8-10 defeated the Tides 2-0 behind 7.2 scoreless, five-hit frames from starter Jhoulys Chacin (W, 1-0) and RBI from SS Daniel Castro (1-for-4) and 2B Reid Brignac (1-for-3). CF Mallex Smith (2-for-5, 2B, 3B) scored both runs.

Berryhill is Back: Former Atlanta Braves catcher Damon Berryhill enters his second season as Gwinnett manager after leading the club to a 71-71 record and a second-place finish in the IL South Division in 2017. Berryhill, the sixth skipper in Gwinnett’s 10-year history, has a career managerial record of 489-458 (.516) in 947 games across nine Minor League seasons. His previous stops include Advanced-A Bakersfield (Texas Rangers, 2008), Rookie-level Ogden (Los Angeles Dodgers, 2009-13), Triple-A Albuquerque (Dodgers, 2014) and Triple-A Oklahoma City (Dodgers, 2015).

Familiar Field Staff: Pitching coach Reid Cornelius (2nd season), hitting coach John Moses (4th season), coach Jose Mota (4th season) and strength coach Jason Curry (5th season) all return to Berryhill’s field staff. The only new addition is certified athletic trainer Nick Jensen, who joins Gwinnett from Class-A Rome…Jensen enters his third season in the Braves organization in 2018.

2017 TEAM IL RANKINGS

Prospecting: The Stripers’ roster currently includes four members of the Atlanta Braves’ Top 30 Prospects list according to MLB.com: Acuña Jr. (No. 1), RHP Mike Soroka (No. 3), LHP Kolby Allard (No. 6) and OF Dustin Peterson (No. 16). Soroka and Allard are set to make their Triple-A debuts.  Soroka: Also rated No. 31 on MLB.com’s Top 100 Prospects list, he was named the Braves’ Phil Niekro MiLB Pitcher of the Year for 2017 after going 11-8 with a 2.75 ERA in 26 starts for Mississippi. In three outings with Atlanta this spring, he posted a 1.80 ERA and .125 BAA.  Allard: Also rated No. 58 on MLB.com’s Top 100 Prospects list, he went 8-11 with a 3.18 ERA in 27 starts for Mississippi in 2017, earning selection to the Southern League Postseason All-Star Team. In two outings with Atlanta this spring, he pitched 3.0 scoreless, hitless innings.  Peterson: Returns to Gwinnett after an injury-shortened 2017 season (out from 3/3-5/18 with a left hamate injury) in which he batted .248 with one home run and 30 RBI in 87 games. In 17 games with Atlanta this spring, he batted .259 with two homers and six RBI.

2017 in Review: Playing in their final season under the “Braves” moniker, the Gwinnett Braves went 71-71 (.500) to finish tied for sixth in the 14-team International League. Gwinnett finished second in the IL South Division, 15.0 games behind first-place Durham (86-56), 5.0 games ahead of third-place Norfolk (66-76) and 10.0 games ahead of fourth-place Charlotte (61-81). Though the GWN Season Records G-Braves won six more games than in YEAR RECORD PLACE 2009 81-63 4th 2016 (65-78), the club failed to repeat as 2010 72-71 7th IL South Division Champions. 2011 78-65 5th  Steady in Second: Gwinnett spent 2012 62-82 12th 135 of 152 days in second place in the IL 2013 60-84 14th South Division (3 days from 4/13-4/15, 1 2014 65-77 12th day on 4/18, 26 days from 4/25-5/20, 105 2015 77-67 T-5th days from 5/23-9/4). Tonight’s Start: 20-year-old right-hander Mike Soroka makes his Triple-A

the youngest Opening Day starter in the 10-year history of the Gwinnett franchise. The previous youngest was RHP Tommy Hanson (22 years, 7 months, 12 days) on 4/9/09, Gwinnett’s inaugural game at Charlotte. Soroka is also just the second Gwinnett starting pitcher to make his Triple-A debut on Opening Day, joining Hanson.

MLB Spring Training: He appeared in three games with Atlanta as a nonroster invitee this spring, going 0-0 with a 1.80 ERA (1 ER in 5.0 IP) and a .125 BAA (2-for-16, 0 BB, 4 SO) before being assigned to minor league camp on 3/9.

Vs. Norfolk: Soroka will face the Tides for the first time in his career tonight. Last Start: He wrapped up the 2017 season with Double-A Mississippi on 9/1/17 vs. Birmingham, tossing 6.0 innings of one-run baseball (3 H, 0 BB, 7 SO).
