Tonight’s Game: The Gwinnett Stripers open a three-game weekend series vs. the Durham Bulls (Tampa Bay Rays)…it is the second of seven series between the two clubs this season.  In the South: The Stripers (7-11, .389) are fourth in the IL South, trailing Norfolk (1st, 10-7, .588) by 3.0 games, Durham (2nd, 8-10, .444) by 1.0 game and Charlotte (3rd, 8-11, .421) by a half-game.  All-Time vs. Durham: Gwinnett is 89-106 (.456) in 195 prior meetings with Durham, and has won the season series vs. the Bulls three times in nine years: 2010 (12-9), 2012 (11-10) and 2015 (12-9).

Last Game: The Stripers lost 8-3 to the Rochester Red Wings in the final game of a four-game set on Wednesday afternoon at Frontier Field. Gwinnett took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on an RBI single from DH Carlos LAST ROAD TRIP (2-5) Franco (1-for-5, RBI), but the Red Wings scored twice off LHP Batting: Phil Pfeifer in the bottom of the first to take a 2-1 lead. LF Dustin .244 (58-for-238), 15 2B, 0 3B, Peterson (3-for-5, 2B, HR, R, 2 RBI) tied the game at 2-2 with an 3 HR, 23 R, 23 RBI, 6 SB opposite-field solo home run off LHP Miles Melotakis in the third, Pitching: 4.25 ERA (28 ER in 59.1 IP), but the tie would be short-lived. RHP Luke Jackson (L, 0-1) gave 38 BB, 56 SO, 2 Holds, 1 Save up three runs in the fourth, including runs on sacrifice flies from both Nick Buss and Jake Cave, as the Stripers fell into a 5-2 hole. Peterson’s RBI double made it 5-3 in the fifth, but the combination of RHP Jason Hursh and LHP Rex Brothers yielded three runs on five walks in the eighth. Melotakis (W, 2-1) pitched 3.0 one-run innings and RHP Matt Magill (S, 2) scattered three hits over 3.0 scoreless frames for Rochester.

Petey Power: Dustin Peterson is batting .600 (6-for-10, 2 2B, 2 HR, 2 R, 6 RBI) over his last two games…he has more homers in his last seven at-bats (2) than he did in 314 at-bats (1) over 87 games on his Triple-A debut with Gwinnet last season. Peterson currently ranks among IL leaders in RBI (T-5th, 12), extra-base hits (T-9th, 7) and total bases (T-10th, 29).  On-Base Streak: After starting the year 0-for-14, Peterson has reached base safely in 12 straight games since 4/12, batting .353 (18-for-51, 5 2B, 2 HR, 6 R, 12 RBI, 4 BB, .400 OBP).  Historic Slam: His seventh-inning grand slam on Tuesday at Rochester (off RHP Ryne Harper) was Gwinnett’s first on the road since 7/25/11 at Norfolk (Mauro Gomez, off LHP Nick Bierbrodt).

Rotation Domination: Including LHP Phil Pfeifer’s spot start on Wednesday at Rochester (ND, 1.0 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 HB, 1 BB, 0 SO), Gwinnett starting pitchers (Allard, Blair, Fried, Gohara, Pfeifer, Santiago, Sims, Soroka, Wisler, Whitley) have combined to go 4-4 with a 2.47 ERA (23 ER in 83.2 IP), a .197 BAA (59-for-300, 4 HR), 31 walks and 82 strikeouts in 18 games. Joey Bats Debuts: 37-year-old Jose Bautista made his Stripers debut in the Rochester series, batting .143 (2-for-14, 2 R, 2 BB, 4 SO, 1 SB) and posting a 1.000 fielding percentage (0 errors/9 TC) in three starts at third base. Bautista, a six-time American League All-Star and three-time AL Silver Slugger with Toronto (2008-17), is batting .190 (4-for-21, 1 2B, 3 R, 4 BB, 4 SO, 1 SB) in six MiLB games (2 with Advanced-A Florida) since signing with Atlanta on 4/18.

Acuña Gets the Call: The Braves selected the contract of Ronald Acuña Jr. from Gwinnett on Wednesday. The 20-year-old, rated No. 2 on MLB.com’s Top 100 Prospects list, became the 75th Gwinnett player to make his MLB debut that night at Cincinnati (1-for-5, 1 R) and went 3-for-4 with his first career homer (solo, off Reds’ RHP Homer Bailey) and two RBI in Atlanta’s 7-4 win yesterday. Acuña hit .317 (92-for-290, 16 2B, 2 3B, 10 HR, 47 R, 35 RBI, 15 SB) in 71 career games with GWN.

2017 in Review: Playing in their final season under the “Braves” moniker, the Gwinnett Braves went 71-71 (.500) to finish tied for sixth in the 14-team International League. Gwinnett finished second in the IL South Division, 15.0 games behind first-place Durham (86-56), 5.0 games ahead of third-place Norfolk (66-76) and 10.0 games ahead of fourth-place Charlotte (61-81). Though the GWN Season Records G-Braves won six more games than in YEAR RECORD PLACE 2016 (65-78), the club failed to repeat as 2009 81-63 4th 2010 72-71 7th IL South Division Champions. 2011 78-65 5th  Steady in Second: Gwinnett spent th 2012 62-82 12 135 of 152 days in second place in the IL 2013 60-84 14th South Division (3 days from 4/13-4/15, 1 2014 65-77 12th day on 4/18, 26 days from 4/25-5/20, 105 2015 77-67 T-5th days from 5/23-9/4). Vs. Durham: Making his ninth start in the International League, Gohara will face Durham for the first time in his career tonight. He has never faced the parent club of the Bulls, the Tampa Bay Rays, in five career MLB games.

Last Start: Making his second rehab start and first with Gwinnett on 4/22 at Pawtucket, Gohara pitched 4.0 innings (2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 SO) and allowed a home run to PawSox catcher Mike Ohlman. Gohara exited with a 2-1 lead and got a no-decision as the Stripers fell 10-9 in 11 innings.

About 2017: Gohara made the rare jump from A-level ball to the Majors in 2017, combining to go 7-4 with a 2.62 ERA (36 ER in 123.2 IP) and a .228 BAA in 26 games (25 starts) between Advanced-A Florida, Double-A Mississippi and Triple-A Gwinnett.
