Monday, April 30, 2018  7:04 PM  BB&T Ballpark, Charlotte, NC  Game #22 of 140  Road Game #12  Radio Broadcast: 97.7 FM

Tonight’s Game: The Gwinnett Stripers open a seven-game, two-city road trip tonight with game one of a three-game series vs. the Charlotte Knights (Chicago White Sox).  In the South: The Stripers (7-14, .333) are fourth in the IL South, trailing Norfolk (1st, 11-9, .550) by 4.5 games, Durham (2nd, 11-10, .524) by 4.0 games and Charlotte (3rd, 10-12, .455) by 2.5 games.  All-Time vs. Charlotte: Gwinnett is 102-103 (.498) in 205 prior meetings with Charlotte, winning the season series four times in nine years: 2011 (13-8), 2013 (13-9), 2014 (13-9) and 2017 (14-11).

Last Game: The Stripers led 3-1 through five innings, but fell 5-4 to the Durham Bulls yesterday at Coolray Field. Durham swept the three-game series. Gwinnett fell behind 1-0 in the second as RHP Andres Santiago yielded a LAST HOMESTAND (0-3) solo home run to Justin Williams, but 3B Jose Bautista (2-for-4, Batting: 2B, R, 2 RBI) quickly tied it at 1-1 in the third with an RBI double .202 (20-for-99), 8 2B, 0 3B, scoring CF Ezequiel Carrera (2-for-4, 2 R, 2 SB). Bautista drove 0 HR, 8 R, 8 RBI, 4 SB home C Chris Stewart (1-for-4, 2B, R) with an RBI single in the Pitching: 4.33 ERA (13 ER in 27.0 IP), fifth and scored on a double by LF Dustin Peterson (1-for-3, 2B, 9 BB, 26 SO, 0 Holds, 0 Saves RBI) to put the Stripers up 3-1. That lead lasted until the sixth, when Santiago (L, 1-1) loaded the bases before exiting and RHP Jason Hursh (BS, 3) gave up a three-run double to Curt Casali, putting Durham ahead 5-3. An RBI double by DH Rio Ruiz (2-for-4, 2B, RBI) cut the deficit to 5-4 in the seventh, but the comeback stalled. RHP Austin Pruitt (W, 1-0) won despite allowing two runs over 1.0 IP, and RHP Hunter Wood (H, 2) and RHP Diego Castillo (S, 1) combined on 4.0 innings of one-run baseball for the Bulls.

Slow Start, Strong Finish? The Stripers’ 7-14 mark is Gwinnett’s worst record through 21 games in the club’s 10-year history. Gwinnett’s previous worst 21-game record came in 2015, when Brian Snitker’s G-Braves went 8-13…that club rebounded to go 77-67, producing Gwinnett’s last winning season. In fact, three of the four winning seasons in club history have started with a losing record through 21 games: 2009 (9-12, went 81-63), 2010 (9-12, went 72-71) and 2015. Only the 2011 G-Braves started strong and finished strong, going 13-8 through 21 games and finishing 78-65.

Peterson Named IL Batter of the Week: Dustin Peterson was named the IL Batter of the Week for 4/23-4/29 today. Over six games, he batted .391 (9-for-23, 4 2B, 2 HR, 3 R, 8 RBI), leading the league in doubles (T-1st), homers (T-1st), RBI (T-1st), extra-base hits (1st, 6), slugging percentage (1st, .826), OPS (1st, 1.288) and total bases (1st, 19). His award-winning week included a grand slam on 4/24 at Rochester, Gwinnett’s first road slam since 7/25/11 at Norfolk (Mauro Gomez). Peterson is the 15th Gwinnett player to win IL Batter of the Week, first since Ronald Acuña Jr. on 8/21/17.
