Tonight’s Game: The Gwinnett Stripers open a six-game, two-city road trip tonight with game one of a three-game series vs. the Pawtucket Red Sox (Boston Red Sox).  In the South: The Stripers (5-6, .455) are third in the International League South Division, 1.0 game behind first-place Norfolk (6-5, .545), 0.0 games behind second-place Charlotte (6-7, .462, trail by winning percentage) and 1.5 games ahead of fourth-place Durham (4-8, .333).  All-Time vs. Pawtucket: Gwinnett is 29-36 (.446) in 65 meetings with Pawtucket since 2009 and has won the season series vs. the Red Sox twice: 2009 (6-2) and 2017 (4-2).

Last Game: The Stripers finished off a three-game sweep of the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders with a 6-3 win on Wednesday at Coolray Field. LHP Max Fried (W, 1-0) allowed a run in the first inning, but settled down for four LAST HOMESTAND (3-3) scoreless frames before exiting after 5.1 innings. Gwinnett quickly Batting: erased a 1-0 deficit with a three-run first inning, highlighted by an .283 (63-for-223), 16 2B, 1 3B, RBI double from SS Johan Camargo (3-for-5, 2B, 2 R, RBI), RBI 5 HR, 32 R, 32 RBI, 2 SB single by 1B Carlos Franco (2-for-4, 2B, 2 R, 2 RBI) and RBI Pitching: 2.80 ERA (19 ER in 61.0 IP), ground out by DH Rio Ruiz (1-for-4, RBI). CF Jaff Decker (1-for25 BB, 64 SO, 4 Holds, 0 Saves 4, RBI) added an RBI single in the second for a 4-1 lead, and back-to-back RBI doubles by Franco and RF Dustin Peterson (2-for-4, 2 2B, RBI) made it 6-1 in the fourth. RHP Miguel Socolovich (0.2 IP), RHP Chase Whitley (2.0 IP) and LHP Rex Brothers (1.0 IP) combined to work the final 3.2 innings for the Stripers. Former Gwinnett pitcher David Hale (L, 0-1) yielded six runs over 4.0 IP for the RailRiders. The 3-0 series sweep was Gwinnett’s first of Scranton/WB in 19 regular-season series (2009-current).

Total Reversal: After batting .195 (23-for-118, 6 2B, 3 HR, 12 R, 12 RBI) in the Rochester series (went 0-3), the Stripers rebounded to hit .381 (40-for-105, 10 2B, 1 3B, 2 HR, 20 R, 20 RBI) in the series vs. Scranton/WB (went 3-0). Johan Camargo (.500, 7-for-14, 2 2B, 2 R, 4 RBI) and Rio Ruiz (.500, 6-for-12, 2 R, 4 RBI) combined to drive in eight of Gwinnett’s 20 runs vs. the RailRiders.

Camargo Completes Rehab: The Atlanta Braves activated Johan Camargo after the game on Wednesday, ending his rehab assignment with Gwinnett (was on the 10-day DL from 3/26-4/18 with a right oblique strain). Camargo batted .303 (10-for-33, 2 2B, 3 HR, 6 R, 7 RBI) in eight games with the Stripers, ranking among IL leaders in home runs (T-1st, 3), HR/AB ratio (3rd, 1/11.00), slugging pct. (6th, .636), extra-base hits (T-7th, 5), OPS (9th, .997) and total bases (T-9th, 21).

Max Effort: Max Fried earned his first career Triple-A win on Wednesday (5.1 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 4 SO), becoming the third Stripers pitcher to do so this year (Mike Soroka on 4/6 at NOR, Kolby Allard on 4/16 vs. SWB). Including two starts with Gwinnett in 2017, Fried is 1-0 with a 1.59 ERA (3 ER in 17.0 IP) and a .186 BAA (11-for-59, 0 HR) in four career Triple-A starts.

Rotation Domination: Stripers’ starting pitchers (Kolby Allard, Aaron Blair, Max Fried, Lucas Sims, Mike Soroka and Matt Wisler) have combined to go 3-2 with a 2.45 ERA (15 ER in 55.0 IP), a .207 BAA (42-for-203, 2 HR), 17 walks and 59 strikeouts through 11 games this season. That group has received just 21 runs of support, however, a 1.91 runs-per-game average.  Soroka: Is 1-0 with a 2.87 ERA (5 ER in 15.2 IP) and a .237 BAA (14-for-59, 0 HR) in three starts on his Triple-A debut. He ranks among IL pitching leaders in strikeouts (T-2nd, 20), highest SO/9.0 IP ratio for starters (4th, 11.49), GO/AO ratio (7th, 1.78) and innings (8th, 15.2).  Wisler: Recalled by Atlanta yesterday after going 0-1 with a 2.25 ERA (3 ER in 13.0 IP) in two starts with Gwinnett. He ranked among IL leaders in fewest baserunners/9.0 IP ratio for starters (1st, 5.25), lowest BB/9.0 IP ratio for starters (T-1st, 0.75), WHIP (2nd, 0.58) and lowest BAA (8th).

Fantastic Franco: Carlos Franco has reached base safely in 10 of 11 games, including a teambest nine-game on-base streak from 4/6-4/16 (.286, 10-for-35, 3 2B, 3 HR, 6 R, 8 RBI, .333 OBP). He has also posted Gwinnett’s longest hitting streak (7 games from 4/8-4/14, .333, 10-for-30, 3 2B, 3 HR, 5 R, 8 RBI) and longest RBI streak (6 games from 4/9-4/14, 8 RBI) this season. Franco currently ranks among IL leaders in home runs (T-1st, 3), extra-base hits (T-1st, 7), total bases (2nd, 25), RBI (3rd, 10), doubles (T-5th, 4), runs scored (T-7th, 8) and slugging pct. (9th, .568).

Power Up: The Stripers have hit 11 homers in 11 games this season, tied with Lehigh Valley for the IL lead. Last year’s club ranked seventh in the 14-team circuit with 117 homers…that total was second-most all-time by a Gwinnett team, trailing only the 2011 club (123 HR).

Kaz Climbing Career Lists: Sean Kazmar Jr. hit his 10th career triple with Gwinnett on Tuesday vs. Scranton/WB, moving him into a two-way tie with Todd Cunningham (2013-15) for third on Gwinnett’s all-time triples list. Kazmar has combined to bat .271 (440-for-1,623, 93 2B, 10 3B, 24 HR, 192 R, 183 RBI, 19 SB) in 468 games over six seasons with Gwinnett since 2013.

2017 in Review: Playing in their final season under the “Braves” moniker, the Gwinnett Braves went 71-71 (.500) to finish tied for sixth in the 14-team International League. Gwinnett finished second in the IL South Division, 15.0 games behind first-place Durham (86-56), 5.0 games ahead of third-place Norfolk (66-76) and 10.0 games ahead of fourth-place Charlotte (61-81). Though the GWN Season Records G-Braves won six more games than in YEAR RECORD PLACE 2016 (65-78), the club failed to repeat as 2009 81-63 4th 2010 72-71 7th IL South Division Champions. 2011 78-65 5th  Steady in Second: Gwinnett spent 2012 62-82 12th 135 of 152 days in second place in the IL 2013 60-84 14th South Division (3 days from 4/13-4/15, 1 2014 65-77 12th day on 4/18, 26 days from 4/25-5/20, 105 2015 77-67 T-5th days from 5/23-9/4). Tonight’s Start: 28-year-old right-hander Andres Santiago makes his first

Santiago opened the year with Gwinnett, making one relief appearance on 4/9 at Durham before being transferred to Double-A Mississippi on 4/11. He went 0-0 with a 1.13 ERA (1 ER in 8.0 IP) in two games (1 start) with the M-Braves before being transferred back to Gwinnett on 4/20. Between the two levels, he is 0-0 with a 0.90 ERA (1 ER in 1.0 IP) and a .206 BAA.

Gwinnett Career:

Last Start: With Mississippi on 4/13, Santiago went 3.0 innings against the Biloxi Shuckers, allowing one run on three hits. He exited with a 3-1 lead, but the M-Braves surrendered four runs in the eighth to lose 5-4.

Vs. Pawtucket: Making his sixth appearance and first career start in the International League, Santiago will face Pawtucket for the first time tonight.

Last Win: On 7/21/17 with Gwinnett vs. Indianapolis, Santiago worked two scoreless, hitless innings in relief of starter Kris Medlen. The G-Braves scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat the Indians 9-3, giving Santiago his second career Triple-A win.

About 2017: Santiago returned to Minor League Baseball after spending one season in the independent Canadian-American League, making his debut in the Atlanta Braves’ system.  Pitching at Every Level: He went 4-8 with a 5.38 ERA (45 ER in 75.1 IP) in 26 games (7 starts) across four levels, pitching for Class-A Rome, Advanced-A Florida, Double-A Mississippi and Triple-A Gwinnett. He combined to strike out 72 batters in 75.1 innings, but allowed 92 hits and 54 total runs.  Long Winter League Slate: Following the season, Santiago pitched 32.0 innings for Caribes de Anzoategui of the Venezuelan Winter League (3-0, 1.13 ERA, 8 SV, 16 SO in 26 games) and another 10.1 innings for Cangrejeros de Santurce of the Puerto Rican Winter League (0-1, 3.48 ERA, 2 SV, 5 SO in 10 games), totaling 42.1 innings in 36 games.

Career Highlights: Entering 2018, Santiago was 40-47 with a 4.64 ERA (384 ER in 744.1 IP) over 190 career appearances (11 starts) across the Los Angeles Dodgers’, Chicago Cubs’ and Atlanta Braves’ systems.  Selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 16th round of the 2007 June draft out of Colegio Carmen Sol (Toa Baja, Puerto Rico).  Spent his first four full seasons in the Dodgers’ rookie leagues, combining to go 7-4 with a 5.11 ERA (53 ER in 93.1 IP) at that level.  In 2012, he ranked fourth among all Dodgers farmhands with a career-high 122 strikeouts between Advanced-A Rancho Cucamonga and Double-A Chattanooga.  Threw a no-hitter in his final start of the 2014 season with Chattanooga on 8/28 vs. Tennessee in a 1-0 win (9.0 IP, 1 BB, 12 SO on 109 pitches), earning Southern League Player of the Week on 9/2/14.
