Sunday, May 6, 2018  1:35 PM  Victory Field, Indianapolis, IN  Game #28 of 140  Road Game #18  Radio Broadcast: 97.7 FM Today’s Game: The Gwinnett Stripers conclude a seven-game, two-city road trip with the finale of a four-game series vs. the Indianapolis Indians (Pittsburgh Pirates). A win today would be Damon Berryhill’s 500th victory as a Minor League manager (499-475 in 10 seasons).  In the South: The Stripers (10-17) are fourth in the IL South Division, trailing Durham (1st, 16-11) by 6.0 games, Norfolk (2nd, 15-11) by 5.5 games and Charlotte (3rd, 12-16) by 1.5 games.  All-Time vs. Indianapolis: Gwinnett is 36-43 (.456) in 79 prior meetings with the Indians, winning the season series over Indianapolis just once in nine seasons: 2009 (6-2).

Last Game: The Stripers entered the bottom of the eighth inning with a 2-1 lead, but Indianapolis scored three runs in the frame and won 4-2 last night at Victory Field. The game was knotted at 1-1 until the top of the eighth, ROAD TRIP (3-3) when 2B Phil Gosselin (1-for-3, R, RBI) drew a walk, tagged to Batting: second on a fly-out by SS Sean Kazmar Jr. (1-for-4) and scored .271 (57-for-210), 13 2B, 4 3B, on an RBI single by 1B Carlos Franco (3-for-4, 2B, RBI). The 2-1 4 HR, 26 R, 25 RBI, 6 SB advantage was short-lived, however, as LHP Rex Brothers gave Pitching: 3.31 ERA (19 ER in 51.2 IP), up a leadoff double to Kevin Kramer and a game-tying double to 17 BB, 52 SO, 2 Holds, 2 Saves Jose Osuna. Brothers (L, 1-1) issued a walk and hit a batter, then exited with the bases loaded and one out for RHP Jason Hursh. Hursh walked Ryan Lavarnway to force in the winning run, then induced an inning-ending 6-4-5 double play that scored an additional run. Indians’ LHP Josh Smoker (W, 2-0) won despite allowing a run in the eighth, and RHP Johnny Hellweg (S, 4) struck out one in a perfect ninth.

Fantastic Franco: Carlos Franco tallied his International League-leading 21st RBI of the year last night. He also ranks among IL leaders in hits (3rd, 30), total bases (3rd, 51), home runs (4th, 5) and extra-base hits (T-7th, 11). Franco is batting .360 (9-for-25) with a double, two homers and six RBI in six games on this road trip…following a 14-game homer drought from 4/14-4/29, he has gone deep on 4/30 at Charlotte (3-run, off LHP Kyle Kubat) and 5/4 at Indianapolis (2-run, off RHP Alex McRae). In 17 road games this season, he is batting .333 (23-for-69, 3 2B, 4 HR, 9 R, 15 RBI, .932 OPS).

IL Leaderboard: In addition to Franco’s IL rankings, the following active Stripers are among IL leaders: Peter Bourjos and Danny Santana are both tied for fourth in triples (2)…Ezequiel Carrera ranks in stolen bases (T-4th, 7)…Rio Ruiz ranks in doubles (T-5th, 8). Among IL pitchers, Kolby Allard ranks in ERA (T-9th, 2.25)…Evan Phillips ranks in holds (T-3rd, 3)…Josh Ravin ranks in saves (T10th, 2)…Andres Santiago ranks in lowest BAA (5th, .183) and WHIP (10th, 0.99).

He was an IL Postseason All-Star in 2014, when he posted a Gwinnett-record .344 average (130-for-378, 29 2B, 5 3B, 5 HR, 58 R, 31 RBI, 6 SB) in 96 games. The 11-man group has received just 44 runs of support in 27 games this year, a 1.63 runs-per-game average.

‘Pen Performers: After going 3-8 with a 3.91 ERA (41 ER in 94.1 IP) and three saves (3-for-8) in April, Stripers’ relievers are 2-2 with a 2.08 ERA (4 ER in 17.1 IP) and two saves (2-for-3) thus far in May. Allard is 1-1 with a 2.25 ERA (7 ER in 28.0 IP) and a .218 BAA (22-for-101, 1 HR, 9 BB, 22 SO) in five starts.

Petey Power: Dustin Peterson was placed on Gwinnett’s seven-day disabled list on Friday. He had hit .342 (26-for-76, 8 2B, 3 HR, 8 R, 16 RBI) over 18 games from 4/12-5/2, ranking seventh in the IL in batting in that span. Peterson was named the IL Batter of the Week for 4/23-4/29 after hitting .391 (9-for-23, 4 2B, 2 HR, 3 R, 8 RBI) in six games…he led the IL in doubles (T-1st), HR (T-1st), RBI (T-1st), extra-base hits (1st, 6), SLG (1st, .826), OPS (1st, 1.288) and total bases (1st, 19) for the week.
