EFFICIENT STORAGE, BACKUP, AND RECOVERY WITH EMC VNX AND EMC AVAMAR Reclaim capacity, increase performance, and lower costs Essentials • Primary storage file-level deduplication for up to 50 percent capacity savings • No impact on applications or end-user productivity • Fast, daily full backups with integrated sub-file data deduplication • Eliminates lengthy, weekly full backups (level 0) • Simple, one-step recovery • Reduces total backup storage by up to 50 times

UNSTRUCTURED DATA—TODAY’S REALITY Organizations of all sizes rely on network-attached storage (NAS) systems to share and store valuable information. However, exponential growth of unstructured data combined with storage consolidation initiatives can make it difficult and expensive to manage. Traditional weekly full file system backups (level-0) often extend beyond the available backup window, resulting in decreased application and user productivity or incomplete backups that leave data unprotected. And in some cases, daily incremental (level-1) backups can extend beyond the backup window—especially if only a portion of a large file has changed—since the whole file must be moved. As a result, storage consolidation efforts and usage can be limited by the backup window. The use of tape is also challenging due to unreliable media and hardware, delays in offsite shipments, and the risk of losing unencrypted sensitive data. The cost of NDMP backup software licenses for NAS backups can also be significant. Traditional NAS file data recovery is a tedious multi-step process, requiring the last good full backup and subsequent incrementals to reach the desired recovery point. And retrieving tapes from offsite storage can take days or longer with no guarantee the data is recoverable when it finally arrives.

Before Avamar • Weekly full backups (level-0) extend beyond available windows • Tedious, multi-step recovery The EMC® VNX® unified storage family, along with EMC Avamar®, provide a best-in-class solution for efficiently storing, protecting, and recovering your unstructured data.

EMC VNX—SIMPLE, EFFICIENT, UNIFIED STORAGE The EMC VNX family—the VNXe® and VNX series—provides a scalable, easy to use, unified platform for block, file, and object data. VNX combines powerful and flexible hardware with advanced efficiency, management, and protection software to meet the needs of today’s demanding business environments.

“With Avamar, we get daily full backups in less than an hour across our existing network links...restore quality and speed also improved.” Bill Meek senior VP and information systems manager, Broadway Bank

VNX utilizes file-level data deduplication and compression technologies to provide up to 50 percent capacity savings, while minimizing the impact on mission-critical data. A flexible policy engine decides whether to deduplicate specific files based on their age, and data can also be excluded. VNX performs all deduplication processing as a background asynchronous operation that acts on file data after it is written into the file system. As a result, there is no latency in the client data path, end-user productivity remains high, and companies can reclaim a significant amount of primary storage capacity to lower costs and extend the useful life of their VNX investments. The VNX series provides unrivaled storage efficiency in its innovative use of Flash technology to optimize performance. Utilizing just a few Flash drives with the EMC FAST Suite software, that automatically tiers data across heterogeneous drives and boosts the most active data to cache, allows customers to receive the benefits of a FLASH 1st strategy. With VNXe systems, distributed sites can deploy a single, unified storage platform that is simple for local personnel to manage, while still delivering advanced features for both SAN and NAS. VNXe features application-driven management and provisioning wizards for VMware and Microsoft Hyper-V server environments, streamlining operation for local users, while Unisphere Remote enables efficient monitoring of remote systems from a central location.

EMC AVAMAR—NEVER BACK UP THE SAME DATA TWICE Avamar delivers an industry-leading, innovative solution for NAS backup, recovery, and disaster recovery. Unlike traditional methods, Avamar’s integrated sub-file deduplication reduces the size of backup data before it is transferred across the network and stored to disk. As a result, Avamar provides fast, daily full backups via existing network links without the need for a dedicated, high-speed NDMP backup network. Avamar also deduplicates backup data across sites and servers to reduce total disk storage by up to 50 times, enabling cost-effective, long-term retention on Avamar Data Store servers. Data can also be encrypted in-flight and at rest for security. With an Avamar NDMP Accelerator node, a level-0 backup is performed only once, during the initial full backup. Subsequent daily full backups are achieved by requesting only level-1 incremental dumps, enabling Avamar to dramatically reduce backup times and the impact on NAS resources and networks. During backup, Avamar can further reduce data that VNX systems have deduplicated at the file-level, by breaking it into sub-file variable length data segments. Only new, unique sub-file segments are transferred across the network and stored on an Avamar Data Store server.
