Principal’s Message

As the year 2016 comes to a close, it seems appropriate to take some time to reflect on the past year, acknolwedge our strengths and our challenges, be noteworthy of our gratitude to those who have supported us throughout the year, and begin to shape our goals for the coming year. For me personally, this past year has been rich with learning opportunities and I am extremely grateful to all the special people in my life that have and continue to support me in all my endeavours. I feel extremely blessed to have worked with extraordinary mentors in my career, none less extraordinary than working alongside my recent colleague, mentor, and friend John McCullough for the past four and a half years at Pinetree Secondary school. During a recent visit to Harbour View, our school caretaker asked if John had taken early retirement. I laughed and asked him, “How old do you think John is?” to which he replied he thought he was somewhere in his late 50’s. Now you may be wondering why I am rambling on about a Principal from a high school in Coquitlam that retired last year and what that has to do with your children and Harbour View. On Friday evening I attended a birthday dinner celebration for John’s 74th birthday and after sharing our caretaker’s comments with him, I asked him what his fountain of youth was to which he replied without hesitation, “The kids Cheryl”. I am extremely grateful for the mentorship of an extraordinary educator who shared with me a love for working with kids each day and a gleeful passion for education. I am so grateful for the opporutnity to work with the Harbour View staff, you, and your children in the Harbour View community and look forward to continuing to support your children with their development and educational plans at Harbour View for years to come. While not without our challenges, I am confident that working together we will overcome them with a common goal to best support our students’, your children’s, success. The community has been extremely welcoming and supportive; it is very apparent to me why so many folks expressed how lucky I was to be coming to Harbour View. Thank you for your continued support of our staff and your kindness and generosity in sharing your children with us! Some highlights from the past month.....November has been a very busy month at Harbour View. Our students worked very hard all last week, firing their neurons learning dance choreography and treated us to a fabulous performance on Friday. A big thank you to Joanne and Katie from Dance in Schools for their patience and instruction all week! Also, this past Saturday we enjoyed our annual Breakfast with Santa event. A big thank you to the PAC and organizing committee and especially to our pancake flippers Mr. Rahn, Ms. Siemens and her husband, and Athan Milonas, and all of our Grade 5 elves for their fabulous face painting, cookie decorating, serving, and assisting Mr. Wong with photos with Santa. An extra special thank you to Derrick Holdenreid for contacting our special guest Santa and organizing his visit to Harbour View! We also enjoyed a very successful Scholastic Book Fair; thank you to Mr. Drake for all his work with this and the awesome Haunted Library in October! Many of you have taken the time to contact me regarding last month’s Newsletter and the “Going for Gold” article attached; thank you to all of you for your positive feedback and support of our school goal this year. The students have worked very hard on each of our Weekly Focusses. This coming week we are focussing on “Taking care of our brains by getting enough sleep, eating healthy foods, and drinking plenty of water!” a timely goal for the coming season. From all of us here at Harbour View, we wish you and your family the best of the holiday season and a Happy New Year. We look forward to a joyous and productive 2017! Sincerely, Ms. Cheryl Woods Principal

Highlights at Harbour View

Dance Week Dance Week was a week of growth! Students worked very hard all week learning routines and rehearsing, demonstrating enormous growth over the week. This connected very nicely with our school Focus for the Week, “When I work on something difficult, my neurons get STRONGER!” The recital on Friday, November 25th was a great success and we were pleased to see so many parents able to attend. A giant thank you to parents who remained afterward to assist with setting up tables and chairs for Breakfast with Santa. And of course, a big thank you to our dance instructors, Joanne and Katie, and our PAC for all their work and support in making this possible through the Dance in Schools program.

Volleyball!

Breakfast with Santa This year’s Breakfast with Santa was a hugh success. Thank you to all the families that attended and to the committee for all their work! A special thank you to Mr. Rahn, Ms. Siemens and her husband, and Ms. Lil’s son for flipping pancakes and to all our grade 5 helpers who did a wonderful job painting faces, decorating cookies, serving, and assisting Santa and Mr. Wong with photos!

The Grade 5s Volleyball season is wrapping up for the season. Harbour View has an upcoming game at Porter Elementary school on Wednesday, November 30th at 3:15 pm. The season will conclude with the Volleyball Jamboree on Wednesday, December 7th at Dr. Charles Best from 3:00 - 6:00 pm. We hope you will be able to join us to cheer our teams on. Go Hawks Go! Upcoming Events at Harbour View We are looking forward to Harbour View’s annual Christmas Production, “North Pole Exposure”. This year, there will be two afternoon performances from 1:30 3:00 pm, one for even numbered divisions on Wednesday, December 14th and one for odd numbered divisions on Thursday, December 15th. We ask if you have more than one child attending Harbour View, you plan to attend the performance that corresponds with your youngest child’s division. Eg./ If you have a child in Grade 2 in Division 11 and another child in Grade 4 in Division 4, we ask you to attend the performanc on on December 15th only. Due to limited seating capacity and Fire Regulations, we are only able to accommodate 2 seats per family. If you have additional family members that would like to attend, we encourage you to invite extended family to attend the Dress Rehearsal performance on Tuesday, December 13th. Doors will open at 9:00 am. Parking and Line up As we are expecting large numbers to attend, the gravel field will be available for parking in addition to Porter Street; enter near Step by Step portable on Merritt Street. Please use extra caution, particularly if arriving during the lunch hour, as children will be playing outside during this time. The school parking lot will be closed; if you require handicap parking, there will be a special area next to the garden off of the gravel field reserved for handicap parking. To avoid congestion in the school hallways and allow children to exit and return into the school for lunch, doors will open for seating at 12:45 pm. Prior to this, a lineup will be queued at the back of the school under the overhang. Following the performance, we ask parents to remain seated in the gymnasium until the students have returned to their classrooms at which time parents are welcome to pick their child up to go home. Donations are welcomed at the door in the following formats: non-perishable food items or cash for the food bank, cash donations to help recover the cost of the production. Want a chance to win the best seats in the house for the Christmas Concert? Entry forms to win a pair of front row seats will be sent home with each student this week. Simply complete and return with payment to your child’s teacher. Each entry costs $5, and there are 6 pairs of seats available to be won for each performance (Wednesday and Thursday). The money raised goes towards PAC Fundraising. Enter as many times as you like! Entry deadline is Tuesday, December 6th at 3pm.

Shirts are $10 and there are 2 options fo choose from, a pink shirt with black print or a black shirt with fluorescent pink print.
