HARVEY COUNTY HISTORY

City-County Airport, located two miles east of Newton, is 1,533 feet above sea level. The population of the county is 34,000 people. Harvey County began as a railroad center with the city of Newton located on the Chisholm Trail. Cattle traveled along the Chisholm Trail from Texas and were loaded on railroad cares in Newton for shipment to eastern cities. The railroad continues to be an important industry in the county. Later, Mennonites from Russia settled in Harvey County and brought with them red winter wheat seeds that thrived in Harvey County and the Kansas plains. The Mennonites also established Bethel College in North Newton and Hesston College in Hesston.

NEWTON HISTORY If you’re in Newton, welcome to the “Bull’s eye.” Bull’s eye is the term used to describe Newton’s geographical location on the North American continent. It is an appropriate name, really, because it’s a nexus of sorts for a number of prominent roadways - Interstate 135, Highway 50, U.S. Highway 81 and Kansas Highway 15. U.S. Highway 81, also known as the Meridian Highway, stretches from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada to Mexico City. And U.S. Highway 50 runs past the White House in Washington, D.C., through Newton, and continues on to Sacramento, California. Rewind Newton back to the days when Newton was first established in 1871, and things were eerily similar in that Newton was the terminal for the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe-operated railways, as well as the railhead for the Chisholm Trail. Newton served as the Middle Division dispatching headquarters for the Santa Fe railroad until the mid-1980s. In 1995, Santa Fe was merged with Burlington Northern Railroad, Now called the BNSF Railway, it is one of the largest railroads in the United States today. The BNSF continues to be large and important industrial taxpayer. The town was pretty wild back in its heyday, gaining a rather grim reputation following the 1871 gunfight at Hyde Park, which resulted in the death of about eight men - depending on what reports you read. This was brought about due to the immense

cattle herds brought to the town with armed cowboys, saloon men, gamblers and others. Today, Newton is the county seat for Harvey County. Its population is more than 19,132 from the 2010 census, and it is 25 miles north of Wichita and included in the Wichita metropolitan statistical area, though truthfully, Newton residents and officials pride themselves on their self-sufficiency, something many other towns orbiting Wichita can’t exactly boast. Harvey County is part of a four county “Metro Area,” which houses roughly a half-million people.

MUSEUMS

HALSTEAD HERITAGE MUSEUM & DEPOT The museum is divided into two main galleries, formerly the depot waiting rooms. The east room holds the Charles Basore Gallery, which contains permanent exhibits that give a brief overview of Halstead history. A life-long resident of the area, Basore was a collector and historian who shared his enthusiasm, and love for local history through collections in his personal museum near Bentley. The west room contains the Lehman-Dreese Gallery, which is designed to house rotating exhibits. This gallery was named in recognition of the faithful and generous support given to the Halstead Historical Society by Gladys Dreese. A large percentage of the Society’s artifacts came from Miss Dreese’s personal collection of family memorabilia. The museum expanded in 2007. There are two additional galleries. One is in the old baggage room with Fred Harvey and Santa Fe memorabilia and the other is in the John Talbott Gallery in the old cargo room with large artifacts, such as a desk from the old Halstead Bank and a loom. Admission is free, although donations are appreciated. Hours are 2 to 5 p.m. weekends or by appointment. 116 E. FIRST, HALSTEAD (316) 835-2267

DYCK ARBORETUM OF THE PLAINS

When people want to get away from the daily grind, they get back to nature and the simple life in a weekend away from the city. If that approach sounds appealing to you, but you’d rather not venture too far from civilization, Dyck Arboretum could provide just the fix you need. Just south of the Hesston College Campus, the 13-acre facility is one of the largest native plant gardens in the region, featuring more than 1,000 varieties of native and adaptable trees, shrubs, wildflowers and grasses and took inspiration from the Bartlett Arboretum in Belle Plaine. While education coordinator Brad Guhr noted the arboretum gets a lot of traffic from Hesston College students and residents from nearby Schowalter Villa, he believes there is something for everyone. “We feature a lot of different plant communities of which we feature native plants of Kansas, so mostly prairie species, promoted in a horticultural way,” Guhr said. “I would say definitely check out what we showcase with regard for landscaping with native plants. I think that has been done well here and those native plants take a while to establish.” Education, recreation and relaxation are some of the biggest draws of Dyck Arboretum, Guhr said. Aside from native prairie

Full-Service Financial Institution

displays, the arboretum also has wooded areas visitors can take inspiration and landscaping tips from. Special events are conducted throughout the year, including the Prairie Window Concert Series and the FloraKansas (or Great Plains Plant Bazaar). “We’re one of just a few places in the state that showcase native plants of the prairie in horticultural and ornamental ways. We’re also the only place in the state featuring the largest array of native plants at our two plant sales,” Guhr said. Dyck Arboretum hosts the bazaar twice a year, in the fall and the spring, with the next sale set for Sept. 8-11. “I think that it is a rich experience for people to know about their Kansas natural history and you can experience that here at the arboretum to some extent,” Guhr said. “You can experience it physically as you walk the paths and see some of the prairie landscape that would’ve been here.” 177 w hickory street, hesston (620) 327-8127 www.dyckarboretum.org

HARVEY COUNTY TOWNS Nestled into Harvey County along with the biggest city of Newton are six other cities, each with their own unique qualities. The six incorporated cities comprise 38 percent of the population bulk of Harvey County. Here’s a look at the other cities in Harvey County:

BURRTON 901 population as of 2010 census - is due west of Newton on U.S. Highway 50. It is the birthplace of Milburn Stone, who portrayed Dr. Galen Adams of Dodge City on the long-running CBS western series “Gunsmoke.”

HALSTEAD 2,085 population as of 2010 census - Located southwest of Newton, Halstead is known as the “biggest little city in Kansas.” Founded largely by Russian Mennonite immigrants, the city of Halstead was incorporated in 1877 and named in honor of journalist Murat Halstead. With the hard red winter wheat (turkey red) they brought from Russia, the Mennonites established Halstead as a farming community, and built the Bernard Warkentine Mill at the confluence of the Little Arkansas River and Black Kettle Creek. It is home to the Halstead Heritage Museum and Depot, which works to preserve the town’s unique, local Mennonite heritage.

HESSTON 3,709 population as of 2010 census - While this town has been around since 1886, in 1990 the town was recognized on a national scale when an F-5 tornado demolished a sizable portion of the town on March 13, killing two. In its beginnings, like so many Kansas towns, Hesston expanded due to the Missouri Pacific railroad’s run west through the state. By 1912, the town had grown into an important shipping and receiving point for farmers throughout the region. Hesston is north of Newton.

NORTH NEWTON 1,759 population as of 2010 census - Located just north and sharing a common border with Newton, North Newton is best known for housing Bethel College, the oldest Mennonite college in the United States, which was founded in 1887. The city describes itself as “A distinctive community working for harmony, beauty and diversity.” It was founded in 1938.

SEDGWICK 1,695 population as of 2010 census - Sedgwick is within a triangle formed by Hutchinson, Newton and Wichita, which serves as an ideal location to attract residents who want the pleasures of small-town living while being close to big-city jobs. Sedgwick’s goal is to grow slowly in population so the small-town amenities remain.

WALTON 235 population as of 2010 census - Walton is located in the northeast corner of the county. It is home to the Walton 21st Century Rural Life Center, a charter school with a new emphasis on agriculture. HARVEY COUNTY RESOURCE GUIDE

NEWTON MEDICAL CENTER 600 Medical Center Drive, (316) 283-2700 continues to expand its services to offer an increasing number of specialties close to home. This hospital, located on the southwestern edge of the city, it is a 103-bed, not-for-profit facility housing specialty units, including adult and pediatric areas, as well as intensive care. In the last few years, the hospital has added a geriatric psychiatric unit, a catheterization lab, wound care center and a surgery center. Newton Medical Center debuted its new da Vinci surgical robot in 2011, which gave doctors a new surgical tool and promises to speed recovery for some patients. NMC paid cash for the $1.68 million robot that is an improvement upon traditional laparoscopic procedures. During surgery two to three 8 millimeter and one 17 millimeter incisions are made to allow the da Vinci arms to be inserted into the patient. One arm is a camera, and the others can be pinchers, scissors, cauterizes or other surgical equipment. The da Vinci allows surgeons to have full wrist-like range of surgical tools. They view the interior of the body through a camera, which provides 3D HD images that have been magnified 10 times. Located at the intersection of Interstate 135 and U.S. Highway 50, Newton Medical Center offers a wide variety of services and professional specialties. Some of these services include Level II nursery, laser surgery, lithotripsy, digital mammography, diagnostic nuclear medicine and bone density scanning. The center is located on a 78-acre campus offering medical clinics and other amenities. Roughly 80 physicians serve on the medical staff. The Newton Medical Center campus also is home to an immediate-care center at Wichita Clinic Bethel.

Activities available include cheer leading, Railiners Dance Team, Azteca Dancers, debate, forensics, FFA, drama, music (vocal, band, jazz band, pep band, orchestra), Odyssey of the Mind, Science Olympiad and Model United Nations There also are two private kindergarten-through-eighth grade schools, NEWTON BIBLE and ST. MARY’S CATHOLIC SCHOOL. A 29.9 million bond issue in 2007 allowed a new media center and administrative offices to be constructed at NEWTON HIGH SCHOOL. The old offices and media center were remodeled into classrooms. About 27,500 square feet was added to the NHS building. In 2009, renovations were completed in the vocational department, and a new agriculture building was constructed at the high school. The high school’s 90-acre campus and cedar tree surrounded parking lot make it a distinctive landmark in Newton. COOPER EARLY EDUCATION CENTER opened six new classrooms in 2010 for children in the district’s preschool and area Headstart programs. About 15,600 square feet were added to the building. After renovations that were completed during the 2012, Santa Fe Middle School reopened in fall 2010 as SANTA FE

Six new classrooms, including rooms that could be used as shelters in case of storms, were added at Santa Fe. The offices for Santa Fe were remodeled in summer 2011. Also included in the bond project was work at the district’s EDUCATION TECHNOLOGY CENTER and NORTHRIDGE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, where classrooms were added. PARKS They call it the Blue Sky, a unique sculpture of blue skies and pillowy-white clouds located on Kansas Ave., across from Centennial Park. Between the color scheme, its arched shape and various reflective surfaces, it seems to naturally blend in with the sky, never quite showing where sculpture ends and real blue skies begin. Dedicated to the life and memory of Jacqueline M. Smith, The Blue Sky appears on signs at each city park, incorporating all of these green spaces together into one unique chapter of Newton’s ongoing story. There is also a superb walking bicycle trail linking Athletic and Centennial parks, for an overall length of 2.5 miles. It follows Sand Creek and begins at West 1st Street. Athletic Park is also home to the Newton Municipal Pool, which is located at 401 N. Santa Fe. It is open late May through mid August and has a 700-person capacity. Diving boards and a large slide, a toddler pool, a mushroom waterfall and a frog slide guarantee fun for all ages. The Newton Activity Center is really the heart of recreational fun in town. On average, it has 1,125 daily users. Available youth sport leagues range from volleyball and outdoor soccer to youth flag football, baseball and even adult softball. Soccer and baseball fields are located at nearby Centennial Park. There is also a gymnasium housing three courts, marked for basketball, volleyball and tennis. A walking track frames the courts. There is also an indoor pool, one of the two pools in town. It has the capacity for 35

PARKS swimmers and an overhead sprinkler provides fun water showers for the tykes. Nearby are three park shelters for rental, each shelter having the capacity of 25 people, tables, electrical outlets and nearby restrooms and a fireplace. The Center also boasts a wellness center with a comprehensive collection of cardiovascular equipment, dumbbells and strength training equipment. The Newton Activity Center also has two meeting rooms; the Sunflower room can accommodate 80 people and the Cottonwood Room up to 40 people, perfect for gatherings or birthday parties. Newton has one spray park, located in the Springlake housing development near Old Main, the park has a playground, walking and bike paths and the spray park. Several sprayers shoot water out of covers painted like lobsters, crabs and seashells. Kids activate the water features by touching one of the green posts at the edges of the splash pad. The park is open to the public.

RECYCLING The City of Newton-Sanitation Division provides solid waste and recycling services to Newton residents. The service features automated garbage collection and curbside recycling on a weekly schedule. Trash and recycling are picked up by separate trucks on the same day. We place a strong emphasis on reducing waste and conserving natural resources through a mandatory recycling program. Our collective efforts have achieved one of the highest solid waste diversion rates in the region. Each residence is provided with two roll out carts. One is for trash and the other for recyclable items. The 90-gallon carts are adequate to store a week’s garbage and recycling at most residences. The carts remain City property and are issued to your address. Please leave them behind if you move. Newton’s recyclables are transported to the Harvey County Recycling Center where they are processed for marketing and sold to manufacturers all across the country to be made into a variety of new products. We are dedicated to providing efficient and friendly service to our customers. If for some reason we have missed your collection or only partly emptied your container, and you did not receive a violation notice, please call us and we will make every effort to return that day or the next day to remedy the situation. If you would like more information on our programs and services, feel free to give us a call or visit our web site. www.newtonkansas.com/departments-services/ public.../curbside-recycling

main runway was extended to its present-day length of 7,002 feet. There are several reasons why Newton has become one of the premiere cities located in and around Wichita as well as a huge contributor to the area’s overall Metropolitan Statistical Area. First, it has to do with its close proximity to Wichita, which lies just 20 minutes (25 miles) south on Interstate 135. The second has to do with the I-135 intersection, as well as the fact that Newton is nestled snugly around I-135. The city of Newton and Harvey County are jointly invested in a local airport, the county provides low cost transportation via its Harvey Interurban service and Amtrak connects Newton to the region and provides cross-country routes, and may even see an expansion in coming years. The city also has a cab company and several car rental companies to choose from.

TRANSPORTATION Twice each day, around the clock, the Amtrak’s Southwest Chief pulls into town, one of the numerous stops on the train’s trek back and forth between Chicago and Los Angeles. But railroads in Newton shouldn’t come as a surprise or shock to folks living here. Newton’s history, in fact, has been entwined with railroads since the town’s inception in the early 1870’s. Newton has always been linked to modes of transportation, even dating back to it’s start, in the 1870’s, when Newton served as the western terminal for the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway. It was also the railhead for the Chisholm Trail. Newton was also the Middle Division dispatching headquarters for the “Santa Fe” until the mid 1980’s. During World War II, the Newton Airport was take over by the US Navy as a secondary Naval Air Station, and the
