Friday Funs & Music Mondays Those looking to celebrate the end of the workweek or ease into the start of it, read on: the 2013 season of concerts in the park and socials on the pool deck is on the horizon, offering folks of all ages low or no-cost fun on many Monday and Friday summer evenings.

Nancy Stock (center), joined by colleagues in parks and recreation, poses with the 2012 Risk Management Innovation Award from Delaware Valley Insurance Trusts (DVIT). DVIT recognized Hatfield Township for recycling old bleachers with a local scrap metal dealer and banking the proceeds to purchase new ones meeting Consumer Products Safety Commission standards. The award included $1,000 to further fuel the initiative. With Stock are (l to r) Michael Krewson, Amanda Zimmerman and Amy Simmonds.

For the consumer, Friday Fun deck parties and MusicFeast concerts are opportunities to meet new friends or rally old ones, in a pleasant outdoor setting offering both entertainment and food. Things are further simplified because reservations aren’t needed and parking is convenient. And for some people, the event sites are within walking distance. Just show up!

A “Friday Fun” is a night out at the aquatic center, with pool use optional. Watching day fall into night and hearing cascading water, all from the comfort of a deck lounge chair, is, itself, a treat. On eleven Friday nights, the staff will introduce something else to the mix; things like karaoke, game show mania, or aquatic spectacles (full schedule, page “These were the years of creating tangible things 2.) It makes things exciting for both spectators to attract people to their parks,” Stock said. “It and participants. Pool members attend for free, continues to delight me to see folks walking the and a modest fee is charged to others at the trails, or romping in the dog park with their dogs.” door, which helps with the cost of pool operations Stock’s first year with Hatfield Township, 1996, and guard staffing. Thanks to TD Bank for sponinvolved part-time work scheduling sports fields soring the professional entertainment on three of and inspecting parks grounds for maintenance the dates.

New Faces In Parks Places The “face” of the Parks and Recreation Department has changed, but the Township-wide mission to deliver services, programs and events remains the same. Leaving the department in February, after 16 years of service, was Parks and Recreation Director Nancy Stock. Entering into a new position as head of parks maintenance was Mike Krewson, a familiar face from his eight years with the township’s public works department. Amanda Zimmerman, with a new master’s degree in public policy in hand, will attend to the details of programs, events and park facility use. Amy Simmonds, the aquatic center’s director, also continues her oversight of summer rec camp, and will team up with Zimmerman on program and event planning. “These are people with ability, energy and ideas,” Stock said. “They are committed to a quality park system and to the variety we’ve achieved in our programming.” Stock ends her tenure with a park system offering both passive and active features, including its highlysought-after sports fields, an amphitheater, a tree nursery and a mini-arboretum.

HAC Aquatic Programs Learn-to-Swim Each student progresses at a different speed in learning aquatic skills, dependent upon a number of factors including class attendance, coordination development, familiarity and comfort level and outside practice. In addition, a child’s stage of development may influence his or her ability to learn aquatic skills. Students will likely repeat a level several times before mastering the skills required for advancement. It is important to remember that mastery of skills takes time, practice and patience. Aquatics staff will evaluate each participant prior to enrollment.

Swim Lessons Sign Ups Require Pre-Testing Step Some new steps have been added to the HAC lessons program registration process. Children will be tested in the water by aquatic instruction staff and then assigned to a Learn-to-Swim lesson level in May. Exceptions to this are the Aqua Explorers Parent/Child Class and Adult/Teen Class. To ensure convenience and minimal wait time during testing, families are advised to telephone the Hatfield Township receptionist to schedule their testing time block. Testing, level assignments and registration will be: 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 21 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 22 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 23 The new steps of pre-testing and assignment to classes by instructors themselves are designed to ensure that children are grouped with similarly-skilled others, that class sizes are balanced and that staff are used at the best instructor-to-student ratios possible. Children coming in for the pre-test should be prepared to enter the water, report to the Welcome Desk, and have their guardian check them in. The test will be approximately ten minutes. Swim lesson registrations will not be accepted prior to May 21. After May 23, families may still register for swim lessons on a space-available basis. A pre-test will still be given to children then, scheduled by the family with the aquatics manager. Contact information for the aquatics manager will be available to the public after May 23. The chart on this page is provided to give families an idea of criteria used by aquatics staffs to assign lesson levels.
