Hazardous Waste:

Chilmark, West Tisbury, Aquinnah and Edgartown residents will need a dump sticker for your car in order to use the Chilmark LDO. Stickers cost $25 each, (resident seniors over 65 $10.00) you will need to bring identification of residential proof. You can purchase your dump sticker at the LDO during the hours of operation listed in this flyer. Your dump sticker will enable you to use drop off stations in Aquinnah, Edgartown and West Tisbury, in addition to Chilmark.. Nonresidents (seniors included) sticker fee is $35.00

Oil-based paint, stain, varnish, thinner, other painting supplies, batteries, pesticides, herbicides, waste oil, mercury-containing light bulbs, computers or any other hazardous waste will not be accepted at the Local Drop Off. Consult with the LDO operator regarding items such as construction and demolition materials, lawn furniture, broken tools, etc.

Trash disposal costs $4 per barrel of household trash; a partially full barrel counts as one barrel. There is an extra charge for metal objects other than metal cans, and household trash may not include construction material or hazardous waste (see below).

Hazardous Waste Collection Days: The Transfer Station in Edgartown will accept Hazardous Waste. The third Saturdays of May, July, September and November, from 9am to 12 noon are Hazardous Waste Collection Days. Bring your hazardous waste to the Edgartown Transfer Station, 750 West Tisbury/Edgartown Road.

Colored glass, cans and plastic (rinsed clean) may be combined Separate clear glass (rinsed clean) from other recycling Newsprint and paper may be combined: tie into bundles or paper-bag Separate cardboard from newsprint/paper. Flatten cardboard.

Lancets, Needles and Syringes (Sharps) expired medications

Used Sharps: on Tuesdays, a bin is set up at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital (Beach Road in Oak Bluffs), where you may dispose of sharps. Please note: these must be securely contained in a closed, rigid container and appropriately marked.

Proper Medication Disposal: When you flush your medications down the toilet, you flush them straight into our drinking water aquifer. Please don’t!  Remove all identifying personal information (prescription label) from medication containers before recycling them.  Pour medication into a sealable plastic bag. If medication is solid, crush it or add water to dissolve it.  Add cat litter, sawdust, coffee grounds (or any material that mixes with the medication and makes it unappealing to pets or children) to the bag.  Seal the plastic bag and put in the trash.
