Anonymous DNA is Identifiable Anonymous DNA is identifiable. As The Wall Street Journal reports, “Genetic information stored anonymously in databases doesnʼt always stay that way.” A new study identified 50 people who submitted their DNA for scientific study only after being assured that no identifying information would be included with the sample. These individuals had been told advances in technology could possibly identify them in the future. That future has arrived. The researchers identified the individuals using unique genetic markers and genealogy websites. As one expert warns about so-called anonymized DNA: “we cannot promise people confidentiality.” “A Little Digging Unmasks DNA Donor Names,” Amy Dockser Marcus, The Wall Street Journal, January 18, 2013.
