TRANSFORMING THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT

HEALTHCARE

Welcome to ROBERTSON Robertson is one of the largest independently owned construction, infrastructure and support services companies in the UK, with a strong confirmed order book, diverse income streams and a dedicated, expert workforce. Covering the entire built environment lifecycle, we operate throughout the UK, with offices across Scotland and the North and Midlands of England. The group was established in 1966 by our Executive Chairman, Bill Robertson CBE. His strategy of creating a broad range of companies – run as separate, fully resourced entities – has ensured strong growth, value-creation and career opportunities, and has led to the comprehensive group of well-run companies that exists today. Robertson comprises 21 businesses, directly employing over 2200 people. These include regionally based construction companies, off-site manufacture, timber engineering, facilities management and energy services, a capital projects business dedicated to public sector partnerships, property development, regeneration, civil engineering, building services, asset management, and housebuilding for the private and affordable markets. A strong entrepreneurial culture – built on the foundations of innovation, productivity and sustainability – permeates all our businesses. Although we encompass a variety of separate businesses and capabilities, we are one group with a common goal: working together to transform the built environment.

Creating outstanding HEALTHCARE SPACES Robertson has a long and successful history in the healthcare sector. We have invested in, built and maintained outstanding healthcare facilities since we were established in 1966.

These projects and contracts have all got something in common: understanding the individual needs of our clients, and putting staff, patients and user groups at the centre of every healthcare project, large or small.

Our experience ranges from community health centres and care villages, through specialised mental health and cancer care facilities, to major regional hospitals.

Clockwise from above: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary; Maggie’s Cancer Care Centre, Aberdeen; St John’s Hospital, Livingston.

2019

CLIENT: NHS Orkney

Robertson is building NHS Orkney’s new £64 million hospital and healthcare facility, which is set to transform the way healthcare services are delivered in the islands. As well as investing in and building this remarkable facility, we will also maintain it for 25 years. This technologically advanced hospital will put people first and make a positive contribution to the environment, local community and economy. It is designed as a strong, contemporary building that is rooted in the culture and context of Orkney. The operation of the facilities, and the needs of staff, patients and user groups, have been considered throughout the design and build process. Delivering a major healthcare project in Orkney presents a unique set of challenges. To solve these, we have taken into account the remoteness of the island, supply chain logistics, local landscape and challenging climatic conditions, as well as specific archaeological and environmental considerations. Supply chain procurement maximises the use of local labour, services and materials in every aspect of the 6

construction, and sub-contract packages have been split into manageable sizes to suit the size of the island supply chain. We are aiming to integrate into the community by providing local employment, training, mentoring and work experience, supporting the community for the next 25 years. It is an excellent example of Robertson’s ability to deliver a large, complex project – making innovative use of offsite manufacturing techniques – on a tight site in the heart of a live, operational working environment. Within this extremely sensitive setting, and with up to 400 operatives on site at any given time, Robertson undertook major demolition, earthworks, piling operations and concrete formwork, with new retaining structures built immediately adjacent to occupied buildings to protect them during construction.

2018

CLIENT: NHS Grampian The £37m ARI Reconfiguration Project involves substantial refurbishment and maintenance of Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, predominantly at Foresterhill, one of the largest healthcare campuses in Europe. The work involves a range of reconfiguration and backlog maintenance works to improve the clinical infrastructure and address business continuity issues – with a focus on critical care, infection control, fire strategy, theatre facilities and diagnostics on existing healthcare premises within the site. The sequence of work was driven through clinical risk assessments and prioritisation within NHS Grampian budgets. The final element of the scheme is the refurbishment and backlog maintenance of the Phase 2 Building. This building is considerably larger than the other parts of the project, covering seven surgical/medical floors and two floors for pharmacology and records. Due to its complexity, the funding and decant strategy was split

into four sections in a sequence that would minimise the impact on clinical services, as many facilities had to remain in service at all times. We kept the programme flexible: planned activities could be changed if urgent clinical or estates business requirements were identified. This project brings the hospital up to modern clinical standards and has facilitated a chain of further projects.

CLIENT: City Hospital Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust Robertson Engineering Services installed M&E services for an advanced new endoscopy and pathology unit at Sunderland Royal Hospital. The work was carried out while ensuring that essential clinical services remained up and running. A £6m purpose-designed facility was created at Sunderland Royal Hospital to rationalise and improve endoscopy services in the area. The Sunderland pathology department would continue to include a ‘hot laboratory’, which carries out urgent clinical tests, while non-urgent ‘cold’ tests would be provided at Gateshead. Phased working was employed to allow this hot lab to stay operational throughout the project. NHS services remained in use around the endoscopy area, including the pathology lab as well as operating theatres. Careful planning and collaboration ensured

FM

CLIENT: County Durham & Darlington Acute Hospitals NHS Trust Chester-le-Street Community Hospital is a busy 44bed facility providing inpatient, outpatient and day hospital services. Robertson Capital Projects provided investment while Robertson North East carried out the design and build. Operational from 2003, this has been a flagship project for partnership working and customer relationships ever since. The success of this project relies on a high degree of communication and operational interfaces between the doctors’ surgeries and facilities on site. The onsite FM team manages, coordinates and delivers total FM, lifecycle, minor works and energy management services. These services radiate from our on-site FM hub, from which all aspects of the site can be controlled. One of our key areas of design innovation was the development of the ‘clean and dirty routes’ to and from this bustling FM hub, and the on-site team uses a BEMS system to proactively manage energy consumption.

In all, we have saved the Trust around £100k per year on a contract that has 16 years left to run: a whole-life benefit of £2m.

“Our people here, from the youngest to the oldest, treat the hospital as something they want to be part of.” Mark Nelson, Project Manager

Maggie’s Cancer Care Centre ABERDEEN

2013

CLIENT: Maggie’s Aberdeen was the last key city in Scotland to receive a Maggie’s Cancer Care Centre. This important development allows the organisation to deliver muchneeded support to the population of a large catchment area. Following our work on key projects throughout the NHS Grampian campus in Aberdeen, we had established an excellent relationship with the NHS, and their team recommended us to Maggie’s as a suitable contractor for this ambitious scheme. From first contact in March 2012, we embraced Maggie’s vision and took the project to a successful, safe, on-time and on-budget delivery in August 2013. The project embodied innovative construction approaches, solved commercial and technical challenges, and displayed safe practices during 12

high-risk operations. The building’s unique design combined with its ability to captivate and enthuse everyone involved - makes Maggie’s in Aberdeen a very special project indeed. Our team’s commitment to the project went beyond design and construction, as they organised and “You would be proud on a daily basis to see how your building is used and the impact it has on visitors. I thought that I was convinced of the power of the physical environment to effect change in behaviour and mood previously, but seeing the way people react when they come in (and return) really is something special.” Sharon O’Loan, Director of Fundraising, Maggie’s, Scotland

participated in several fundraising events - including the Maggie’s Monster challenge, which involved a 31mile bike ride followed by a 41-mile hike, literally going the extra mile for Maggie’s. Robertson regularly facilitated and hosted site walkarounds with potential donors, which helped the client secure several large contributions towards the build/ operational budget. Maggie’s in Aberdeen has a small footprint, but a large impact - on the client, on Robertson and the wider project team, and most importantly on the people who use the centre.

2016

CLIENT: South Tyneside NHS Foundation Trust on behalf of South Tyneside Council Haven Court is a care hub built in the grounds of South Tyneside District Hospital. It has been designed to integrate a range of services including residential, day and respite care, as well as rehabilitation, particularly for older people with dementia. The emphasis is on helping patients to live as independently as possible, with a rehabilitation and therapeutic service on offer to help them return to their own homes when the time is right. Robertson North East England constructed the building to a design that would bring a variety of care services together into a single hub, while Robertson Engineering Services delivered the M&E design to accommodate the special requirements of elderly users. The interior is designed using colour schemes that help people find their way around, and also includes various elements that support independent living and general wellbeing. Hard landscaping works included internal courtyards that provide a safe and calm area to relax and recover.

• No major plant was situated near the bedrooms so future maintenance would not affect patients. • Underfloor heating with local control provides a comfortable environment in each room. This required coordination of various elements including damp-proof membrane, floor insulation and dry lining. • All bedrooms had en-suite facilities consisting of walk-in shower, toilet and wash hand basin. • The heating and hot water for the entire building is provided from a central plant room, which can be monitored and controlled to suit the needs of the end users. • Dimmable corridor lighting is set to provide gentle, 10% illumination at night.

CLIENT: NHS Lothian

RMF Health, a joint venture company, has delivered a £2.5m redevelopment to Ward 20 at St John’s Hospital in Livingston, in partnership with NHS Lothian. The project saw a new theatre built for eye and hand surgery patients, within the existing Ward 20, to support pre- and post-operative care. St John’s Hospital is the regional hand trauma unit and is the referral and treatment centre for patients throughout Lothian.

“I’m delighted - this refurbishment will vastly improve the access for patients to these services.” – Aris Tyrothoulakis, Interim Site Director, St John’s Hospital, NHS Lothian

Expanding surgical capacity A new theatre had been identified as an area for improvement, so that more patients could be seen. The existing Ward 20 was located on the second floor of the hospital and had one operational theatre. The new accommodation now includes an additional theatre with the existing theatre converted into one with laminar flow ventilation that can reduce infection. The refurbishment also created a new day surgery unit that means patients have better access to services for eye and hand treatment. This unit will concentrate on providing pre-assessment, elective surgery and trauma surgery for both disciplines. There is now the additional capacity for up to ten theatre sessions per week. 16
