N Names ames are important because they are a way of revealing something about ourselves -‐-‐ tthey hey are used to define our relationships. As important as names are to us, they were far more important in Biblical times – they felt that someone’s nature, their being or essence, was tied up in their name. The ancient Israelites knew that knowing God’s names meant knowing more about Him, His nature, and His essence. Just as our name speaks volumes about us and who we are – God’s names speak volumes about who He is. A.W. Tozer said, “What comes to mind when you think about God is the most important thing about you.” Who we think God is will _____________________ the kind of person we will become. Why study the names of God? What difference will this make in my life? 1. WE ARE COMMANDED TO _________________ GOD’S NAME. Out of Ten 10 Commandments God devotes an entire commandment to honoring His name. Malachi 3:16 tells us that God records in a “book of remembrance” the thoughts of those who meditate, esteem, or honor His name. 2. WE _________________ MORE ABOUT GOD BY KNOWING HIS NAMES. These names were not made up by man to describe God, they were revealed to man directly by God. When you know God’s names, you k now Him better. When you know God’s names—you know Him better. 3. WE GROW _________________ TO GOD BY KNOWING HIS NAMES. When you tell someone your name—you are opening up yourself to be known. The Bible tells us the story of God opening Himself up to by known by us. Psalm 9:10 says, “And those who know your name will p ut their trust in You…” 4. Elohim – The ______________ ______________ God
Elohim is the first name that God c hooses to use in introducing Himself (and it is used 2,570 times in the O ld Testament). Genesis 1:1, “In the beginning ELOHIM created the heavens a nd the earth.” Elohim is plural. If He is one God, why is Elohim plural? 1. God is revealing His nature as the ________________ (God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) 2. As we study His names, all of his ________________ are wrapped up in Elohim. He contains every attribute. This name of God answers the question, “Why are we __________?” and “What is my purpose? Psalm 19:1 says, “The heavens d eclare the glory of God and the expanse declares the work of His hands.” When you study astronomy, you can see just how powerful a Creator God really is. When God said, “Let there be light and there was light” (Gen. 1) – that was a phenomenal moment because at that point in time, light came out of the mouth of God traveling 182,282 miles per second. A light year is how far light travels in a year (that’s 5.88 trillion miles). If you wanted to travel to the Whirlpool Galaxy, even if you traveled at a speed of 186,282 miles per second—it would still take you 31 million years to arrive at it. God has given us one star called our sun. It is 10,000 degrees on the surface and is 93 million miles away. With light traveling at 182,000 miles per second, it only takes 8 minutes for the sun’s light to cover that journey to the surface of our skin here in Kansas City. Psalm 33, “By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, their starry hosts by the breath of his mouth.” Because our God is ELOHIM, He is the answer to my need for a _______________. Elohim tells us that God was not only at the beginning of this universe, but he was also there at your beginning.
Psalm 139:13-‐14, “For You [Elohim] formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mother’s womb. I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; marvelous a re Your works, and that my soul knows very well.”
JEHOVAH – “__ _____” The God Who Always Is
Jehovah or Yahweh is the name that occurs almost 7,000 times in the Bible. You can learn to recognize it when you read your English B ible because it is always translated in all capital letters: “LORD.” In Hebrew, this name is only written with 4 Hebrew letters YHWH It is nearly impossible to properly pronounce this name for God. The ancient Hebrews c onsidered this name for God so holy that they would not even attempt to pronounce it. When Jewish scribes were transcribing the Scriptures from scroll to scroll, whenever they would come to the name YHWH, they would put down their pens, take a ceremonial bath and clothe themselves with brand new garments, take a brand new pen and write the name YWHW, and then take both the pen and their clothes and burn them. This was the same ritual they would go through whenever they came to this name for God. I AM simply means “The God Who Always Is.” Yahweh also means that He is “Self-‐Sufficient” – He doesn’t need you, your service, or your worship – He simply allows you to serve Him. This name was first revealed to Moses at the burning bush. Exodus 3:14, “And God said to Moses, ‘I AM WHO I AM.’ And he said ‘Thus you shall say to the children o f Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.” Because God is Jehovah, this speaks of His ability to work in your ______________. God is in the moment – no matter what that moment is in your life….He is always present. Growth only takes place when we go through a ___________ __________________. God is not the great “I WAS” – He is the great I AM. Jesus said, “Why are you so upset and disturbed, I AM.” Jehovah (I AM) means that He will be to you whatever it is you need Him to be at that moment.

Adonai is used to refer to God more than 300 times and this name is usually translated as “Lord” in our English Bibles. The name "Adonai" implies ownership. In Genesis 15, God had promised to Abram that he would be blessed. Abram didn’t see how that blessing could be possible since h e had no children to pass the blessing on to. However, Abram came to a point of surrender and recognized his own lack of sufficiency and he calls out to God as his “Adonai.” Because God is your Adonai, He is your _______________ and you are to be His ____________. Someone has said, “The only true choice we make that affects every other decision we make in life is who our master will be.” Once you establish the fact that He is ADONAI in your life – all the other pieces seem to just fit together (see Matthew 6:33). Jesus wants your allegiance because He is Adonai. FACT: Every day around the world, _____ Christians are being m artyred because they have committed their lives to the fact that Jesus is Adonai.
JEHOVAH JIREH – The God Who ____________
Because God is Jehovah Jireh, He will provide whatever you need at that moment. He is the answer to your immediate needs. When Abraham was 100 y ears old and Sarah was 90 years old—they have a son, Isaac! God was in that moment as it was truly a miracle. But in Genesis 22:1-‐2, we find that God is testing Abraham by asking him to sacrifice his son on Mount Moriah. God often does things that we don’t understand—but that doesn’t mean that He isn’t in the moment. Over in Hebrews 11, the B ible says that Abraham “BY FAITH” knew that God was in this moment. God sometimes puts us in situations to grow and stretch our faith—so that our faith will grow stronger. God will not cause us to face a test unless He knows we are ______________ of passing i t! Abraham’s faith sustained h im through those moments when God didn’t make sense – and he continued to trust God. QUESTION: Can God be trusted with your “ISAAC”? Your “Isaac” is whatever is the ____________ _____________ of your life. If you can trust God to provide for your ____________, why is it such a challenge to trust Him to provide for your ______________? One of Satan’s most useful schemes is to keep Christians focusing on their ____________ rather than on God’s _____________.
