Our Our God is one God, but He is so complex that n o one name can adequately describe Him. By By understanding the names of God, we learn His __________________ as well as His _______________ to be what we need from Him in every situation of our lives. Knowing the names of God defines your relationship with Him. Most people carry around incomplete photo albums of the nature and character of God. They have many different “pictures” when it comes to their understanding of God. • The _____________ God – they picture God as a sweet grandfather who welcomes them and ignores sin. • The _____________________God – They picture God as someone who rains prosperity down from Heaven • The ______________________God – He is a deistic deity who is detached from our every day lives. • The ____________ ____________ God – They picture Him proclaiming “You’re guilty!” • The _____________________ God – They feel they have not worshipped until they have had an emotional experience. When we learn the names of God, we have a complete “photo-‐album” of the essence, nature, character, and work of God. He is multi-‐dimensional and multi-‐faceted.
Jehovah Tsaba – “The Lord Our ____________”
This name is first mentioned in 1 Samuel 17, during the battle between David and Goliath. In ancient times, many battles were fought by way of representation. Each opposing army appointed a representative to battle it out against the other. Whoever wins that battle imputes his v ictory to the entire army. On the Philistine side, stood a giant – Goliath of Gath (9 ft. 9 in. tall) on the other side was David, a man of below average stature. Where David got his confidence to defeat this giant of a man? David was able to see what he saw because he knew the power of God’s name. “You come to me with a sword, and a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the LORD o f hosts [Jehovah Tsaba], the God of the armies of Israel, whom you h ave taunted. This day the LORD will deliver you up into my hands…that all this assembly may know that the LORD does not deliver by sword or spear; for the battle is the LORD’s and He will g ive you into our hands.” (vs. 45-‐47) God’s name was enough for David to win this war because David knew that God’s name was a gateway to His power. And God’s name can give YOU the power to defeat the Goliath’s you face in your life. If you’re wondering h ow to overcome the situation you are in or the opposition you face – then you’re thinking the battle is yours. And if that’s the case, you’re not going to succeed. The Bible says that “our struggle is n ot a gainst flesh and blood, but against the rules, a gainst the p owers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.” (Ephesians 6:12). You are not smart enough or strong enough to beat an enemy from another realm – the battle belongs to the Lord. Because God is Jehovah Tsaba, I can allow Him to fight my ________________ for me.
Jehovah Shalom – “The Lord is ___________”
When the Promised Land was finally inhabited and divided by the twelve tribes –there was no cohesive government and unity among the Israelites. Because of that, they had lost their spiritual vision and they had turned to other gods. When you read the book of Judges, y ou see 2 key phrases: “There was no king in the Land” and “Everybody did what was right in their own eyes.” You also see this repeated cycle in the book of Judges: 1.) SIN, 2.) OPPRESSION, 3.) REPENTANCE 4.) DELIVERANCE. This c ycle repeated itself over and over again (much like our own lives). How can we break free from this repetitious cycle that keeps us from being what God wants us to be? The name Jehovah S halom gives us a lot of hope. Judges 6:1-‐6 is the story of Gideon. Because of Israel’s SIN, God gave them into the hands of the Midianites (OPPRESSION). God’s messenger appears to Gideon and tells him to deliver Israel. Gideon immediately has some excuses for why he shouldn’t be the one (“I am too young” and “I am the least in the tribe of Manasseh”).
So Gideon asks for a number of signs from God to prove to Him that: 1.) This is really coming from God and 2.) that this is what He is supposed to do. Judges 6:24, “So Gideon built an altar there to the LORD, and called it The-‐LORD-‐is-‐Peace [Jehovah Shalom]” The word shalom can mean wholeness or wellness or it c an mean peace. The idea behind the word shalom is wholeness and harmony in relationship with God. Peace is the deepest desire and need of the human heart. If you find yourself wondering where the blessing of God’s presence is in your life, you need to call upon Jehovah S halom. Can you honestly say today that you are experiencing complete wholeness in your relationship with God? Was there ever a time in your life where you loved Jesus more than you do at this moment? Because God is Jehovah Shalom, I can experience complete ____________ and ___________.
Jehovah Rohi – “The Lord is My _______________”
When the Bible says in Isaiah 53:6 that “All we like sheep have g one astray” – The Bible is comparing us to what is perhaps the dumbest animal on the face of this earth. Sheep cannot be trained, they have no defense mechanism, they can’t protect themselves, and they h ave no instinct of danger. Sheep have a total dependence upon the Shepherd—and that is why God chose to use them as an illustration for the relationship between the L ord and believers. When Psalm 23 says, “The LORD is my Shepherd…” He is speaking of Jehovah R ohi. Psalm 100:3, “Know that the Lord, He is God; it is He who has made us, and not we ourselves; we are His people and the sheep of His pasture.” Because God is Jehovah Rohi, I can be confident in knowing that He ___________ over and _________ for us. In Psalm 23 you can see all the names of God, “The LORD [Yahweh] is m y Shepherd [Jehovah Rohi], I shall not want [Jehovah Jireh], He maketh me to lie down in green pastures [Adonai], He leadeth me beside the still waters [Jehovah Shalom], He restoreth my soul. He guides me in the paths of righteousness [Jehovah Tsidkenu] for His name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear n o evil, for You a re with me [Jehovah Shammah]. Thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. He preparest [Jehovah Jireh] a table before me in the presence of my enemies [Jehovah Nissi]. You anoint my head with oil [Jehovah Rapha]. My cup overflows. Surely, goodness and mercy shall follow m e all the days of m y life and I will dwell in the house [Elohim] of the Lord forever [El Elyon and El Shaddai].”
JEHOVAH NISSI – “The TThe Lord is My ___________”
In other words, “The Lord is my Conqueror.” He is the answer to my need for h elp. In the Old Testament, a banner was a staff or pole with a metal ornament on it that would glisten in the sun. That staff or rod acted as a rallying point for God’s people—it reminded them of God’s cause as they prepared for battle. Moses knew that the Rod of God was a symbol of the Favor of God. In Exodus 17, the Amalekites come after Israel to destroy them. When Israel went to war, Joshua led the troops while Moses stationed himself on top of a hill with a staff in his hands. Exodus 17:15, “Moses built an altar and called it The LORD is m y Banner. He said, "For hands were lifted up to the throne o f the LORD.” Because God is Jehovah Nissi, He is the answer to your need for ________ and for spiritual ____________. God wants to take an active part in your life – He wants to be your banner and bring His favor into your life. You can never “let God down” because you’re not holding Him up! He’s holding you up!
JEHOVAH MEKADESH – ““The Lord Who _____________ You”
Israel has now been prepared to live in the Promised Land but HOW are they to live? Leviticus 20:7-‐ 8, “You shall consecrate yourselves therefore and be holy, for I a m the LORD your God. And you shall keep my statutes and practice them; I am the LORD who sanctifies you.” Sanctification is the process of being made into the image of God. “Jesus’ call to commitment is clear: He wants all or nothing. The thought of a person calling himself a “Christian” without being a devoted follower of Christ is absurd.” Sin is like a cancer that spreads death and destruction throughout your entire body. FACT: You have to stop ____________ and _______________ Christ in order to sin. Because God is Jehovah Mekadesh, He is able to ____________ us from sin and m ake us more into the image of _______________ when we turn to Him.
