The The names of God are His way of revealing Himself eed. to people at the point of their greatest need. God would reveal one of His names to His people whenever they were going through a c risis experience. To really get to know God, you must get to know Him by name. In the same way that a prism breaks down white light into a myriad of colors, s tudying the names of God help us to discover the individual aspects about God’s nature.
Jehovah Rapha – “The God Who _________”
The Hebrew word raphameans “to heal, to restore, or to cure.” God combined His name Jehovah with rapha to reveal Himself to us as the only source of wholeness and healing. This name for God first appears in Exodus 15:22-‐27. The Israelites had just been delivered out of Egypt, they had witnessed the parting of the Red Sea, and they had only been traveling in the wilderness for three days when they find themselves at their only source for water and the water is bitter (undrinkable). God told Moses to throw a piece of wood into the bitter water and it became sweet. Vs. 26"If you listen carefully to the voice of the LORD your God and do what is right in his eyes, if you pay attention to his commands and keep all his d ecrees, I will not bring on you any of the d iseases I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the LORD, who h eals you." If you have had a great experience with God—many times He will test you at the height of that experience to see if you are willing to trust Him with the _____________. Great spiritual victory is often followed by defeat and discouragement. When G od opens up the windows of heaven to ___________ us, Satan will open up the gates of hell to ___________ us. Life can move from the sweet to the bitter very quickly. just that quickly. You do not grow and learn to trust God at the Red-‐Sea miracles of y our life. You learn to trust God in the day-‐to-‐day grind of everyday life – when things change and you struggle with bitter experiences. Emotional scars take longer to heal than physical scars. Psalm 147:3 says, of God, “He heals (rapha) the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” Time doesn’t heal all wounds. Wounds that are left untended will fester and spread its i nfection throughout our entire body. Psychologists have proven over and over again that the way you see yourself – your self-‐esteem, your self-‐worth, your self-‐concept – is largely determined by what you think the most important person in your life thinks about you. That is why our relationship with Jesus Christ must be the most important person in our life.
Jehovah Tsidkenu – “The Lord is our ______________”
Once again, Judah had fallen away from God. The prophet Jeremiah warned the people that they were going to be brought i nto captivity. He pronounced judgment but whenever God gives a word of judgment, He also gives a word of promise. Jeremiah said that the Lord had promised to raise up a righteous branch to reign as king and His name will be the Lord our Righteousness – Jehovah Tsidkenu. Jeremiah 23:6, “In His days Judah will be saved, And Israel will dwell securely; And this is the name by which He will be called, ‘The LORD our righteousness.” Ultimately, Jesus is the fulfillment of that promise – The Bible calls Jesus the righteous branch of David. Jesus is both the example of perfect righteousness as well as the provider of righteousness. 2 Corinthians 5:20-‐21, “Therefore, we a re a mbassadors for Christ, as though God were entreating through us; we beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” If you are one of God’s children – you’re holy. If you ever feel like you can’t live the Christian life, that’s right where you need to be. God never asked you to live the Christian life apart from Him. He wants to be your strength, He wants to live the Christian life through you and do for you what you could never do for yourself. God wants you to start walking and talking like you are the righteousness of God in Christ.
El Elyon – “The ________ ________ God”
EL is the most common name for God. El means “the strong One or the Mighty One.” The name ELYON means “Most High God, the Supreme One.”
In Genesis 14, Abraham had assembled a small army to go and retrieve his nephew lot from the wicked King of Elam’s captivity. Afterwards, the Priestly King Melchizedek blessed him in Genesis 14:19 saying, “Blessed be Abram by God Most High [EL ELYON], Creator of heaven and earth. And blessed be God Most High, who delivered your enemies into your h and.” Abraham refused to give credit for that victory to anyone but El Elyon. Every day we must make this basic choice: Are you going to live by _______ _____ power or by _______ power? When you see God as EL ELYON… 1. You will see Him as G reater than Your _____________ -‐ Psalm 46:1-‐4 2. You will see Him as G reater than ____________ _________ Around You -‐-‐ Psalm 57:2-‐3 3. You will see Him as G reater than Your _________________ -‐ Psalm 78:35 God is more powerful than any situation or challenge you may face. The good news is that God makes His power available to you.
El Shaddai – “Almighty God Who __________ and ____ ___________”
The word “SHADDAI” actually comes from the Hebrew word “Shad” which means “breast.” It was used in the Bible to express nourishment. Isaiah 66:13, “As a mother comforts her child, so I will comfort you.” Shaddai means the one who nourishes. BIBLE B ACKGROUND: How did God reveal Himself as El Shaddai? When God called Abraham to leave his home and go to the place He would show him…He also promised to Abraham that he would make him a great nation (Gen. 12:2) and that his descendents would be as the “dust of the earth.” (Gen. 13:16). But now Abraham and his wife Sarah are growing too old to bear children. They begin to doubt the promise of God and they try to take matters i nto their own hands. So God appears to Abram in Genesis 17:1: “When Abram was ninety-‐nine years old, the Lord appeared to Abram and said unto him, ‘I am the Almighty God [EL SHADDAI], walk before me and be blameless.” What are you struggling with today? What have you messed up by taking matters i nto your own hands? Have you fallen on your face before El Shaddai and trusted Him to supply what y ou need. The Christian life is not about ______ _________, it is about God’s power __________ to your life.
Jehovah Shammah – “The Lord is ___________”
Read Ezekiel 48:35. The revelation of this name c ame out of a shattering experience the Israelites had. Their capital city of Jerusalem and the temple had been destroyed. The faith of Israel was distinguished by their emphasis on the presence of God in the midst of their temple. For them, the temple was a visible symbol of the presence of God. When that temple was destroyed, to them it seemed as if God had left them. But Ezekiel brought a word of hope to the people: He declares that there will be a new temple built and the name will be Jehovah S hammah – “The Lord is there” The Name Jehovah S hammah is a reminder that in our darkest hour, God is with us. Whenever you begin to feel abandoned, helpless, or hopeless—pray in the name of Jehovah Shammah. J. Oswald Sanders said: “Peace is not the absence of trouble, but the presence of God. Does your lifestyle demonstrate that God is present in you? Psalm 139:7 asks, Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? ?? God is omnipresent. He's everywhere. Somebody said that God is a c ircle whose center is everywhere and whose circumference is nowhere.
Immanuel – “________ with _______”
The word Immanuel appears only three times in the B ible: Isaiah 7:14, 8:8, and Matthew 1:23. Jesus is also the fulfillment of this name, because in Matthew 1:23, “Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and shall bear a Son, and they shall call his name Immanuel,’ which translated means, “God with us.” Before his ascension to heaven, Jesus made this promise to his followers: "And surely I am with you always, to the very end o f the age." (Matthew 28:20) That promise is repeated in the last book of the Bible, i n Revelation 21:3: And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "Now the dwelling of God is with m en, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God.” God’s presence was seen in the Old Testament through such things as a burning bush or a pillar of fire. But in the New Testament, God’s presence is seen through the person of Jesus. After His ascension, His presence is seen through the Holy Spirit. No matter where you are or what y ou’re currently experiencing – God is right there with you today!
