Help Make Sure They Never Start Tobacco use is the most preventable cause of disease and death in the US. Cigarette smoking kills more than 480,000 Americans each year, with over 41,000 deaths attributable to exposure to secondhand smoke.1 Smoking-related illness in the United States costs more than $300 billion a year. This includes $156 billion in lost productivity and nearly $170 billion in direct medical care for adults.1, 2 In 2015, an estimated 15.1% (36.5 million) U.S. adults were current cigarette smokers - 75.7% (27.6 million) of whom smoked every day, and 24.3% (8.9 million) smoked some days.3 Tar Wars is a community-based program for fourth and fifth graders designed to teach our kids to live tobacco-free lives. The program is implemented by volunteers and conducted in the classroom. Tar Wars teaches kids about tobacco use short-term health effects, the cost of using tobacco products, and the tobacco industry’s advertising techniques used to market their products to youth. Get involved. Volunteer to be a Tar Wars educator today. Visit http://www.aafp.org/patient-care/public-health/tobacco-nicotine/tar-wars.html for more details. References: 1. 2. 3.
