Have you, or will you be moving? If so, you will need to edit your address change in the parent portal. If you need help with updating your address in the Parent Portal, please contact our Registrar, Kristi Meyer, at 204-1745.

Have you, or will you be moving out of the East attendance area? All families that have moved out of the East attendance area will also need to apply for an internal transfer by completing the online internal transfer request. Through our internal transfer process, families can ask that their child attend an MMSD school outside of their regular MMSD attendance area. Beginning with the 2015-16 school year, the Board of Education adopted a revised application process. Round 2 of the application period runs through 6:00pm on August 21. This process applies only to new internal transfer applications beginning with the 2015-16 school year. If a student has an approved internal transfer for the 2014-15 school year, nothing has changed for that child and their transfer. They continue to follow the rules outlined in the previous version of the board policy.

East High School Enrollment New to MMSD—(see page 4 for registration information) Tuesday, August 18th: 11am—6:30pm Friday, August 21st: 7:30am—1pm

GET PREPARED FOR ENROLLMENT DAY: WHO SHOULD ENROLL ON AUGUST 18th & 21st? All grades: 9th—12th grade students. This includes new freshmen who attended Black Hawk, O’Keeffe & Sherman Middle Schools, and returning 10th—12th grade students. The enrollment process will generally take about 30 minutes, but may be longer. Please keep this in mind for your arrival time as the stations will close at the above end times.

WHAT DO I NEED TO DO BEFORE I COME TO ENROLLMENT? Completing the online enrollment process before you come to East will help ensure you are prepared when you arrive and make this process go as smoothly as possible. The IC portal will open on August 4, 2015 for you to begin the online enrollment—everyone must complete the online enrollment. Beginning August 4th, the Madison Metropolitan School District will provide internet access and assistance in completing the online portion of student enrollment. A list of sites that will be providing help this year is located on page 10 of this newsletter.

From a computer, complete the following online forms: 1

PRE-ENROLLMENT INFORMATION AND ONLINE ENROLLMENT

Log in to https://www.madison.k12.wi.us/enroll and complete the online enrollment, print forms, sign and bring with you to enrollment.

If you do not know your Infinite Campus username and password, log in to: mmsd.org/lostpassword to fill out a form to receive an email with your username and/or password. A response will be sent to you within 24 hours. 2

FEES To expedite the process of enrollment, pay fees online beginning August 4, 2015 at:

https://www.madison.k12.wi.us/node/10214. Print your receipt and bring it with you to enrollment. Fees may also be paid during enrollment via cash or check. A list of fees is located on page 5 of this newsletter. 3

FEE WAIVERS The fee waiver request is included in the online enrollment process under the socioeconomic status section. Print these pages with your enrollment forms. Your request will be reviewed by the building principal or authorized school district personnel at a later date. (There is no

MEALS PROGRAM—ALL FAMILIES ARE ENCOURAGED TO APPLY ONLINE!

This year we are encouraging ALL families to apply for the meals program online while completing the online enrollment. Why? Because some additional State funding for East is based on the number of families who complete the application—not the number that qualify. So even if you don’t qualify, we ask that you complete the online application at https://foodsvcweb.madison.k12.wi.us/ 

For families that qualify and want to utilize the program, print off your completion page and bring this with you to enrollment. If you receive any other statement of eligibility, such as a lunch application number for this program, please bring this form to enrollment. Also, if you live more than 1.5 miles from East and you qualify for the meals program (whether or not you use it), your student may apply for a free bus pass. Additional information is on page 6 of this newsletter.

WHAT IF…? I’M A NEW STUDENT TO THE MADISON DISTRICT REGISTRATION of NEW STUDENTS (students who are entering East for the first time from a district other than Madison) at East will be handled anytime between 8am—2pm by appointment throughout the summer with our Registrar, Kristi Meyer. Please call Kristi at 608/204-1745 to make arrangements for registration.

I HAVE MOVED BUT I AM STILL WITHIN EAST’S ATTENDANCE AREA The online registration has a section on change of address. Complete this section and bring verification (gas/electric bill, lease or mortgage) of your new address to enrollment.

I HAVE MOVED OUT OF THE EAST ATTENDANCE AREA All families that have moved out of the East attendance area will need to apply for an internal transfer by completing the online internal transfer request.

I CAN’T MAKE THE SCHEDULED ENROLLMENT DAYS It’s important for incoming freshmen (from Black Hawk, Sherman and O’Keeffe) and returning 10th—12th grade students to enroll on the scheduled dates—this is when principals, counselors, nurses, food service, bilingual and secretarial staff will be available to assist you. Freshmen who are unable to enroll on August 18 & 21 must come to the main office, room 1037, between 8:00am—3pm on Monday, August 31 in order to attend classes on Tuesday, September 1st. 10th—12 grade students who are unable to enroll on August 18 & 21 must come to the main office, room 1037, between 8:00am—3pm on August 31st or September 1st in order to attend classes on Wednesday, September 2nd.

I HAVE OTHER QUESTIONS If you cannot find the answer to your questions on either the East website eastweb.madison.k12.wi.us or the District website mmsd.org/enroll or [email protected], please call the District enrollment office at 608/663-4957, or call Judith Parish at 204-1746 or Kristi Meyer at 204-1745 at East.

Summer Greetings Parents/and or Guardians and 10th Graders: I hope this finds you all rested and restored - enjoying the beautiful yet short summers in Wisconsin! Allow me to introduce myself - my name is Beatriz Bonet and I'll be your grade level principal for the next three years. My class of 2015 Seniors just graduated and I'm very excited to be working with this new group of young men and women from the class of 2018! In addition to 10th grade level responsibilities; I also oversee several departments at East. The ESL (English as a Second Language) Visual and Performing Arts and Theatre and Mathematics. Also any questions you may have related to student activities at East - from Student Congress to Clubs, please let me know. I'm sure your summer has been a whirlwind of activity. Mine certainly was - in early June I became a grandma to twins! A precious boy and a girl- so I've spent most of my summer helping my daughter with the babies in Chicago - it's been a wonderful blessing. I know you'll be returning in September eager and ready to learn. I remember many of you as 9th graders and look forward to working with you and getting to know you all better as we make our way to the final goal of graduation in 2018! In closing, please don't hesitate to stop by room 1027 should you need to, or call me at 204-1557. Enjoy the remainder of your summer - make those precious memories count! I'll see you all in September! Best Regards, Beatriz Bonet

Impact Testing Concussion safety is an important aspect of high school athletics. The ImPACT© test is a computerized testing program that assists medical doctors, training staff, and other health professionals to better understand when it is safe for athletes to return to participate in sports. The test is administered on a computer to each studentathlete and measures brain functions like memory, reaction time, and attention span.

A

H

The ImPACT test provides an individualized baseline record of brain functioning that is used to assess where a concussed athlete is in the recovery process and how quickly they can make a safe return to the sport. As concussions can have a variety of effects on different people, having individualized baseline knowledge of a student-athlete’s brain function allows medical staff to understand a concussion’s effects on that particular student.

L

Madison East High School currently offers FREE team-wide testing at the beginning of the season for each of the following sports:

E

Football, Soccer, Wrestling·, Basketball, Hockey, Gymnastics, Softball, Baseball, Track & Field

T

The ImPACT test is also available at NO COST to any other East High School athletes that wish to take the test. Please contact athletic director Dave Kapp ([email protected]) or athletic trainer Mandy Louderback ([email protected]) for more information on the testing procedure.

T

I C

Parent / Athlete permissions and verification of willingness to adhere to the Athletic Code are now available online. Please visit the Athletics page on the East website: http://eastweb.madison.k12.wi.us/athletics and go to "Athletic Forms" This must be completed prior to participating in athletics at East High School.

CYNTHIA CHIN

FROM THE MATH DEPARTMENT Welcome back students! We are looking forward to providing you with many intriguing, challenging, and successful experiences in mathematics. Thank you for bringing your excitement about the new year to the classroom! KNOW YOUR GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS: Students and families are reminded that the state math requirements for high school diplomas have increased for the graduating classes of 2017 and beyond. The new requirement to earn three full math credits applies to current juniors, sophomores and freshmen. Keep this in mind as schedules are planned and to help motivate you to make timely progress through this year’s classes. There are fewer “second chance” opportunities allowed under the new guidelines if a student has the goal of graduating in four years. Please take advantage of all the resources available to help you stay on track. CONGRATULATIONS & THANKS Outstanding Seniors in Mathematics, 2015: Courtney Burns, Spencer Halberg Thank you to the Cohen and Krause alumni families for the June donation of batteries and used graphing calculators for the East rental program. More about calculator rentals later….. STAFF UPDATES: In order to model lifelong learning for our students, math teachers have been very busy with professional training since school dismissed in early June. Workshops and coursework have included district-wide sessions on new curricular resources and teaching options for Algebra1, Geometry, and Advanced Algebra with Financial Applications. The Carnegie Learning materials for Algebra 1 and Geometry in particular are aligned with the heightened mathematical rigor of the Common Core State Standards and offer logistical support for teachers to practice student-centered pedagogy that addresses the following objectives.  Multiple learning styles accommodated  Class time centered on active engagement and problem-solving.  Mathematical discourse modeled and practiced, as students are prompted to explain their thoughts and processes for solving math problems. Individual teachers have also participated in a College Board/UW-Madison Institute for AP Calculus BC, an exam reading for AP Statistics, and a workshop on mathematical modeling, as well as continuing work for some toward advanced degrees or additional certifications. Welcome (again!) to Ms. St. Peter, who increases her schedule at East to full time this fall with a combined Mathematics and English as a Second Language appointment. She will join the Geometry team for collaborative planning. Mrs. Willauer (formerly Ms. Lynch) joins the Algebra 2 Team this fall, and Ms. Paschke accepts a pair of new assignments, teaching Calculus BC and an AP Academic Skills Seminar. Ms. Dorsey and Mr. Gnam are not returning to East. We thank Ms. Dorsey for the energy she brought to the Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and AVID site teams, her co-advising of Math Club last year, and her initiative in bringing Introductory Computer Programming to our school. This programming course will now be taught by faculty in the East business department. The math department would like also like to express its deepest appreciation for Mr. Gnam’s service to students and staff throughout the building in many capacities for the past 14 years. His contributions in the mathematics classroom include early leadership in the incorporation of computer technology into geometry and calculus classes, the expansion of our fledgling Calculus BC program beyond the bounds of the AP exam syllabus, and his consistent, positive message to students that mathematics is discovery-oriented, forward-looking, alive and well—a discipline to be practiced thoughtfully as well as an art to be enjoyed. (Continued on next page)

EAST HIGH SCHOOL—AUGUST / SEPTEMBER 2015

Page 20

(Math—Continued from page 19)

CALCULATORS: In order to learn and apply the mathematics covered in most classes at East, students will be required to use a graphing calculator. (Geometry courses are the only exception.) This is a versatile tool and a worthwhile investment. Students often find it to be helpful in science classes and are also expected to be familiar with this technology when taking standardized state exams, the SAT or ACT, and Advanced Placement examinations. A calculator from an older relative or friend can certainly be used again, but sharing is difficult because the calculator is used on a daily basis in class and at home. The specific models recommended are all made by Texas Instruments: TI-83, TI-83+, TI-84, TI-84+, and TI-84 +C (color edition) (“Silver” and “NSpire” editions have higher computing speeds and more memory, but are not required.) Please be aware that other models may not be supported in class We understand that this is an expensive purchase. East High School offers a calculator rental option to families in need of assistance. The rental fee is $15 for the entire school year. Payment plans are offered in cases where rental fees present a hardship. A copy of the rental agreement will be available at registration, in the event that you wish to take advantage of this program. Completing the form and making the rental payment at that time will ensure that your student obtains a calculator during the first two weeks of the school year. About purchasing calculators: --Watch for sales—you should not pay more than $90 for a TI-83 or more than $120 for a TI-84+. The Color screen and NSpire editions can more expensive. Families can decide if the color enhancement, rechargeable batteries, or Computer Algebra Systems are worth the increased price, but they are not required for classes at East. Some retailers offer significant discounts at their online addresses. --Make sure your name is permanently marked on your calculator and that you write down the serial number from the back, in case of loss or theft. PROTECT YOUR INVESTMENT! DO NOT LEAVE YOUR CALCULATOR UNATTENDED, EVEN IN A CLASSROOM! --IF you are in a position to donate a new / used calculator, or replacement batteries, to the school rental program, your gift would be VERY much appreciated. Donations should be directed to the math department chair, Mr. Galarowicz. (204 -1603 x 41528 or [email protected] ) The return of any stray calculators from last year would also be good for us—please check backpacks and around the home again if you were unable to return a calculator on time in June. We look forward to working with students (and their calculators) in class. Please contact a member of the math faculty if you have additional questions. TUTORING & TA’s: One-to-one help in the classroom, during study hall, or after school, can really make a difference. Students and parents are strongly encouraged to take advantage of tutoring resources immediately in the fall, before serious academic difficulties arise. Achievement Connections will be ready on Day One to assist eligible students in Algebra 1 via one-to-one matches with tutors 2-3 times per week. Criteria for admission include 85% or better attendance and mathematics teacher recommendation. Geometry students (including Algebra “graduates” of last year’s program) should make their interest known right away but should understand that they will be considered only after as many eligible Algebra 1 students as possible are given the opportunity to accept or decline services. Parents and guardians who want to know more about this program may contact coordinator Hannah Stephens at [email protected]. (Continued on next page)

EAST HIGH SCHOOL—AUGUST / SEPTEMBER 2015

Page 21

(Math—Continued from page 20)

Log-in information and website addresses will be made available to eligible students early in the school year. These students and their supporters will be able to access many of the same user resources--training videos & interactive tutorials, for example--as are available to classroom teachers. Our math teachers would like to point out that, since there is no provision being made for separate parent or tutor “practice” accounts, online work must be completed by students only. The software dynamically adjusts problem selection, choice of hints, and difficulty level based on student responses, so it is critical that computer records accurately reflect a student’s individual understanding at any given point in time. Families and community resource staff can best support students by asking questions instead of giving answers, helping students to articulate their own thought processes and conclusions, and encouraging them to formulate their own questions for independent or classroom investigation. Thank you for helping students to use this new resource responsibly and productively to enhance and monitor their own learning. Community members who can assist East students at any level of mathematics are welcome as volunteers. ---To assist a student one-on-one in algebra or geometry, use the Achievement Connections direct email [email protected] -- Contact Cynthia Chin 204-1603 x 41534 [email protected] to inquire about volunteer placements in the classroom or assisting students with advanced coursework. ---East juniors and seniors who tutor during a free period can razzle-dazzle their prospective colleges, not to mention learn a lot about mathematics and the career of teaching, with a one-semester daily commitment as a Mathematics Teaching Assistant. MSCR Homework Club is open to ALL students daily afterschool and provides one-on-one or small group assistance to students in all core academic subject areas. New Student Access to Math Tutorial Software. Students in Algebra 1 and Geometry district-wide have access this year to the web-based mathematics software Cognitive Tutor, which supplements their coursework and can also be used to review and practice prerequisite skills. Use of the software by classroom teachers will vary from school to school and classroom to classroom as teachers receive training and as technology infrastructure upgrades allow. However, families and community organizations can assist students to learn and practice mathematics off-campus via students' individual online accounts. Earn either Service E credit as a volunteer or elective credit towards graduation. See your counselor to sign up for this independent study option. If you don’t have a specific teacher’s class in mind, ask Mr. Galarowicz or Ms. Chin about classes with anticipated need. AP COMPUTER SCIENCE UPDATE. This course will not be offered at East in 2015-2016. Students who still have it on their schedules should plan to consult with their counselors during registration week in order to learn what alternatives are available. MATH CLUB: Watch for announcements about meetings. We will be very busy with math competitions and fund-raisers to support the calculator rental fund. YOU can become part of this East tradition. New members are welcome at all grade levels. (Continued on next page)

The Parent Portal is a confidential and secure website where you can get current information about your child's school attendance and grades.

P A R E N T P O R TA L Do you use the Portal? Have you established access to this information? If not, here’s why you should and how you can get access. NOTE: You can sign up for Infinite Campus in person in Room 1023 (The Freshman Office) at East High School and must show a valid driver’s license or state ID. If you have questions or issues after the initial set-up, we can verify your identity over the phone and assist with issues. What is Infinite Campus? Today, all K-12 school districts use some sort of database system for managing student information and maintaining their records. Infinite Campus is a district-wide student information system designed to manage attendance, grades, schedules, test scores, and other information about the students in the MMSD. In 2007-08, Infinite Campus replaced another system the MMSD had used since the late 1980's.

What is the Infinite Campus Parent Portal?

The Parent Portal is a confidential and secure website where parents and guardians can get current information about their child's school attendance and grades.

What information is included in the Portal? What do I use it for? When you, as a parent or guardian, log-in, you have access to information about all of the students for which you are associated. Class schedules, assignments and grades can be viewed. E-mail hyperlinks facilitate communication with classroom teachers. In addition, schools post important information on the home page, such as events, notices, etc. Attendance information is also available. The Parent Portal allows report cards to be viewed online and printed. Through the Infinite Campus Parent Portal, MMSD provides an online communication tool which can help you as a parent or guardian stay current with your student's progress. From an Internet connection at home, the workplace or any public library, you can view up-to-date information

about your student's attendance and grades.

How do I first use the Infinite Campus Parent Portal? You must set up a user account in order to use the Portal. Your child's school provides you with a Parent Portal activation code. By using this code and following the instructions in the Parent Portal User Setup Guide, you can setup your own user account for the Parent Portal. The Infinite Campus Parent Portal is l o c a t e d a t : http://infosvcweb.madison.k12.wi.us /ic/entry_public. We recommend you "bookmark" this location after you get your account enabled. After you go through the process of creating your user name and password, write them down and keep them in a place where you can refer to them at a later date. The user name and password will allow you to see student information, but only for those children for whom you are a parent or guardian.

Download the Infinite Campus mobile app to your iPhone or iPad and have mobile access. View the tutorial at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UjW6rloXrIs. Once the app is downloaded, enter our District URL hbtvtv.

If you have questions, contact Jessica Penning at 204-1613 or [email protected]

TELEPHONE CALLS TO CLASSROOMS If your son/daughter or a teacher calls you from a classroom telephone during the school day and you call that phone number back, your call gets directed to an office phone—It will not ring directly to the classroom phone. Our phone system is not set up to allow outside calls to ring directly to classrooms during the school day. Since calls from classrooms are generally not an emergency, if you provide our office staff person with the phone number you dialed, they will transfer your call to the classroom voice mail.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNING:

TELEPHONE CALLS OR MESSAGES FOR STUDENTS Telephone messages to students from parents for non-emergencies has become a very big problem for school office staff and teachers alike. When a parent calls to leave a message for a student, office staff must interrupt the teacher and other students in the class to deliver the message. This procedure is very disruptive to the classroom learning process. Parents can assist by confining their requests to EMERGENCY situations only. Proper planning and communication would be greatly appreciated.

FINE ARTS & THEATER:

Following these procedures would be appreciated:

MATH:

PERMISSION TO LEAVE SCHOOL Early release for medical appointments: Parents should call the appropriate number to the left or send a note with their child the day before the absence, if possible. Students then go to their grade level office to pick up a blue pass excusing them from class early. Students coming in late should have been called in or have a note from a parent, doctor, or dentist. Parents, remember that students may not leave school without a pass from their grade level office. If your student has an appointment, he or she must check out and check back in to their grade level office. If your student is ill, he or she MUST go to the nurses’ office. Proper parent notification and check out will happen at that time. Students who leave school without a pass will be marked unexcused. REQUESTS for HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS may be done by accessing the listing of all staff on the East website and e-mailing your student’s teachers directly. Phone requests may be done through the grade level offices.
