The scheme is progressing very well, with structures coming out of the ground at a good rate the first bridge beams (over the railway) are expected in November. The good weather has certainly helped production with the drainage and bulk earthworks progressing well with in excess of 100,000 tonne moved every week.

HEYSHAM TO M6 LINK ROAD

THE LINK

Having pledged a target of getting 100 people back into work on the scheme, it’s pleasing to see that we have reached 68 from the LA postcode, coming off Jobseekers’ Allowance. With just under two years to go we are really happy with how construction and the interface with the community is going. We thank everyone for the patience shown so far as we continue to deliver the link road. Costain Project Manager Andrew Langley

The story so far… Northgate The first stage of traffic management is now in place at Northgate junction to allow us to widen the east side of the road (towards Morecambe Road). We’ve also excavated for the foundations of a new retaining wall in front of the Honda dealership, allowing us to construct a new kerb line and begin to widen the road. 1

Morecambe Road We’ve started re-laying the 600mm diameter gas main across the junction at Morecambe Road. In the Hadrian Road area we’ve imported earth for the new junction onto the existing A683. This earth needs to settle for 12 months before the new access road through to Hadrian’s Road can be built. 2

Lancaster and Morecambe College We are now constructing a new car park for the college situated in the land formerly occupied by the piggeries, to make sure that they do not lose car parking spaces through the construction of the new road. Work to improve the drainage of the college playing fields has now been complete. Sand slits were placed at 1m intervals to feed water to the underground drainage which has been installed. The field has now been reseeded. We’re now installing the pre-cast sections of Thorpe View underpass that provides the college with access to the fields under the link road. 3

abutment wall will be constructed on the opposite side of Torrisholme Road next year. Focus in this area has now turned to the construction of the Cross Hill retaining wall. Earthworks have also begun to re-profile the field to the south of Barley Cop Lane with a new entrance to be created south of the new bridge over Torrisholme Road. This section of Barley Cop Lane (Crem Lane) will close from 6th October 2014 for 4 weeks, diversion signs will be in place for the crematorium and sports clubs. Folly Railway Bridge Both the east and west abutment walls are now 12m high and are progressing well. The bridge deck will sit on two bearing shelves at the top of each abutment wall. We anticipate having both bearing shelves complete 5

by mid-October. Following this, there will be a 4 week operation to raise the ground 5m above its current level. This will provide a crane platform for the erection of eight 42m long steel beams in late November. Milestone Canal Bridge Permanent steel sheet piles have been installed to both sides of the canal, providing reinforcement to both banks. Some 88 concrete piles have been driven 18m deep in to the west bank ready to take the main base which will be poured in mid-September. 6

Earthworks We are currently moving around 8,000m3 of material around the project on a daily basis (that’s 14million pints) with a fleet of twenty 40 tonne dump trucks. Most of this material will be used to create the man-made drumlin which will help to reduce noise and light pollution from the new road. 7

The drumlin will be constructed to the south of the new link road along the length of Hammerton Hall Lane and bounded by Lancaster Canal to the west. We’re on schedule to move the total 800,000m3 of material before the end of October 2014. Slynedales Culvert on the A6 We’ve dug down approximately 7m to remove the current drainage pipe and install a wider one that should help with the flooding issues experienced in the Slyne area. This 1626m culvert should drain around one third of the surface water on the link road at a rate of approximately 4,500 litres per second. 8

Slynedales Culvert on Halton Road Preparation work to install this wider pipe under Halton Road was completed in July and the road reopened to single lane traffic. The progress here is steady to minimise any risk of interruption to the services that supply homes on Woodlands Road.

Once the pipe is finished and runs through from the A6 to Halton Road, a short road closure will be necessary to finish resurfacing the road. Archaeology After spending 26 weeks on site Oxford Archaeology North are now assessing the archive. Details of their assessment will be submitted to Lancashire County Council for review and will be published at a later date. 10

Carus Bridge on Kellet Lane An access haul road off Kellet Lane is now complete allowing us to start the excavation of 70,000m3 of material. Once this excavation is underway work can begin on the construction of the piers and abutments for Carus Bridge. To allow for the necessary works this section of Kellet Lane has now closed to traffic for up to a year. 11

Shefferlands Bridge on Halton Road Halton Road has reopened to traffic, three months ahead of schedule. The pre-cast concrete bridge itself was supplied by Shay Murtagh and has been transported in sections from Northern Ireland via Heysham Port. This is the first permanent structure completed on the link road and will carry traffic over Halton Road, connecting the new Lune West Bridge and Caton Road.

Bubble Screen in the River Lune

The installation of a bubble screen around our works on the River Lune serves as a protective measure for any aquatic species living in this stretch of the river, particularly fish. The screen surrounds the platforms that extend into the river where a ‘curtain’ of bubbles is created by pumping compressed air through a double line of perforated tubing running along the river bed. The screen acts as both a physical barrier in the river, by dampening any vibration produced by piling works on the river banks, as well as a behavioural barrier by directing fish around the works.

12

Lune West Bridge – North Bank A 400m3 reinforced concrete base for the new bridge has now been poured. Three of the four shafts necessary to support the bridge have been sunk to a depth of 7m and the fourth is in progress. The construction of the concrete abutment walls will continue for the remainder of 2014. 13

9

Lune West Bridge – South Bank Piling works are now complete and reinforced concrete work has begun for the south abutment, by the end of the year the reinforced concrete base of Pier 3 should be complete. Production of the steelwork for the bridge has started, and it is expected on site in March 2015. 14

Working in partnership

Croskells Farm on Caton Road Earthworks and drainage works have now started in what will become the park and ride facility. Drainage, ducting and kerblines are currently being installed for the new junction of the slip road and Caton Road. 15

Over the next few months BT will be undertaking some diversion work along Caton Road, and the construction of new splitter islands and footpaths will begin. A full closure of Caton Road will be necessary before Christmas to fully reconstruct Caton Road under the motorway bridge. Bulk Green/ Southbound Slip roads Earthworks are underway and a wheel wash has been installed in an effort to minimise the amount of dirt leaving site. Over the next three months we’ll start construction of the new Bulk Green junction. 16

Children encouraged to ‘Stay Safe, Stay Away’ from construction sites

Ivor Goodsite and Antony Crowley explain the dangers of entering a construction site

Before the school holidays the project team, with help from local children, launched a major campaign to warn parents and children of the dangers presented by a construction site. No fewer than 28 schools were invited to take part in a ‘Stay Safe, Stay Aware’ poster competition aimed at explaining the risks involved in wandering on to construction sites or playing on construction equipment. The judging panel faced a difficult task when sorting through all the entries before picking the overall winner. All of the entries on the shortlist are being made in to posters to be displayed around the project. Community Relations Officer for the link road Antony Crowley, and the Considerate Constructors

Scheme mascot Ivor Goodsite, visited local primary schools to explain the dangers of entering a construction site. The winning school (St Wilfrid’s CoE Primary School based in Halton) received a £500 cheque, and the opportunity for a group of its pupils to visit The Bay Radio’s Lancaster base for a tour of the building and the opportunity to take part in the advertisements by delivering part of the script. Antony Crowley added, “Costain has ran poster campaigns before, but I think the commercials are a little bit different and we really hope they’ll encourage the kids to Stay Safe and Stay Away. We’d also like to thank all the schools for their support in getting the

message across to the children.” In co-operation with The Bay Radio, the ‘Stay Safe, Stay Away’ campaign messages were broadcast over the duration of the school holiday aimed at deterring children from playing on construction sites. Costain Project Manager Andrew Langley said, “The industry has a historical issue within school holidays so we took the decision to work with The Bay Radio to try and get the message to as many people as possible. We were very well received at the schools. We have already had issues with children playing on our site; hopefully the message will deter them from doing so in the future.” Hannah, Aged 10
