The Early Days

The roots of Historic Chester, NJ were planted 200 years ago when its earliest settlers followed the Indian trails that crossed in an area called “Alamatunk” by the Minisink Indians, meaning black earth bottom or Black River. Eventually, Black River was replaced by Chester (after Chester, England), and on January 29, 1779, the Township of Chester was born.

Chester’s Industrial Revolution

The fast-moving streams that flowed through the region made Chester a prime setting for water-powered gristmills, saw mills, and also served as power sources for the early charcoal-burning forges and furnaces used to process the iron ore taken from local mines. When the Civil War increased the demand for iron, Chester’s mines flourished. However, once larger iron ore deposits were discovered in Minnesota, Chester’s iron industry waned. By the 1890s, all of its mines were shut down.

Back to Basics

With the demise of mining, Chester turned to farming. At the beginning of the 1900’s, the township became a popular haven for New Yorkers who sought respite from the frenzied pace of the city. Many of the original buildings and country roads remain around Main Street, helping to preserve the rustic, timeworn beauty that is the essence of the town.

Modern-Day Chester

Today, the widespread local businesses, specialty shops, restaurants, cafes, parks and farms make Chester a must-see destination in all seasons. Visitors from points far and wide flock to the well-known public events sponsored by the HCBA throughout the year, which include one of the largest craft shows in the Northeast, a Cruise-n-Shop Car Show, an annual Harvest celebration and other seasonal attractions throughout the holidays.
