Keep kids busy on a cold winters day

THE WORLD IS ONE BIG ADVENTURE PLAYGROUND FOR KIDS, AS THEY EXPLORE AND DISCOVER THE WORLD AROUND THEM. YOU CAN JOIN IN THE FUN WITH THESE SIMPLE, SAFE AND EXTREMELY ENJOYABLE (AND COLOURFUL!) EXPERIMENTS WHICH USE EVERYDAY THINGS FROM AROUND THE HOUSE.

Stay warm with these crafty ideas

“LAVA LAMP”

MAGIC MILK

What you’ll need:

What you’ll need: • Food colouring (2 or more different colours) • A shallow dish – such as a pie pan • Full-cream milk • Dishwashing detergent 1. Pour milk into the pie pan until it is about half full. Wait for the milk to reach room temperature.

1. Fill the clear plastic bottle about ¾ full with vegetable oil.

2. Randomly place a few drops of each food colour into the milk.

3. Add the coloured water to the bottle with oil and screw the lid on tight.

3. Next, place a few drops of dishwashing detergent into the milk.

4. Turn the bottle sideways and watch as the colour moves its way up and down the bottle making funny shapes and blobs.

4. Watch as the colours swirl to create beautiful patterns. INTERESTING FACT: THE SOAP BREAKS DOWN THE FAT IN THE MILK AND CAUSES THE FOOD COLOURING TO SWIRL WHICH HELPS MAKE SOME VERY FUNKY DESIGNS. 4

• Vegetable oil • Water • Empty soft drink or water bottle (clear) • Food colouring • Plastic cup

2. Fill the plastic cup with water and add a few drops of food colouring. One colour is best. Stir.

INTERESTING FACT: OIL AND WATER DON’T MIX – THE TWO LIQUIDS SEPARATE THEMSELVES INTO LAYERS. THIS EXPLAINS WHY SOME ANIMALS SUCH AS SEALS CAN SWIM AROUND IN ICY COLD WATER QUITE HAPPILY, BECAUSE THEIR COATS ARE OILY!

GOTTA GREAT RECIPE? POST IT TO OUR FACEBOOK PAGE TO SHARE.

WHEN THE WEATHER’S COLD, YOU WANT A SNACK OR WEEKEND LUNCH THAT’S FILLING AND NUTRITIOUS. LOOK NO FURTHER - HERE’S COMFORT FOOD THAT WILL HAVE KIDS (AND GROWN-UPS) COMING BACK FOR MORE!

EASY PUMPKIN SOUP This soup also tastes great if you include other root vegetables such as potato, sweet potato, or parsnip - just add a little more liquid and cook until all vegies are tender.

MILD VEGETABLE CURRY

CHEESY SAUSAGE & BEAN LAYER BAKE 820g tin baked beans Dash of Worcestershire sauce 8 Sausages 8 bacon rashers 2 tablespoons dried breadcrumbs 2 tablespoons grated cheese Place the baked beans in an ovenproof dish and season with the Worcestershire sauce. Cook the sausages and then arrange over the beans. Cook the chopped bacon for 2 minutes. Arrange the bacon over the sausages. Top the dish with breadcrumbs and cheese. Cook in a moderate oven for 20-25 minutes. 6

Olive oil Onion, finely chopped clove garlic, finely chopped 1 carrot, diced ½ teaspoon cumin ½ teaspoon garam masala pinch paprika tin of coconut cream ½ cup frozen peas 1 head of broccoli, chopped

BEEF & SAUSAGE PASTA 500g pasta 375g mince 350g kabana sausage 800g tinned diced tomatoes 200g sliced mushrooms 2 tablespoons tomato paste 1 cup beef stock 2 teaspoons chopped fresh garlic Cook the pasta in boiling water. Saute beef and kabana until beef is well browned. Then add garlic, tomatoes, mushrooms, tomato paste, and stock. Simmer for 10 minutes and stir occasionally. Drain the pasta and stir through the sauce.

www.kidsonthecoast.com.au | www.kidsinthecitymagazine.com.au

2 cups peeled & chopped pumpkin 1 diced carrot 1 diced onion 1 tspn nutmeg OR 1tspn ground coriander Approximately 600 mls water and 1 chicken stock cube (or use readymade chicken stock) Place all the vegies in a saucepan. (If you have more time, add extra flavour by sautéing them in a little olive oil until they begin to brown.) Add water and crumbled stock cube (or just use readymade chicken stock) until vegetables are just covered with liquid. Add nutmeg or coriander.

Chopped mixed vegetables (eg eggplant, sweet potato, pumpkin, cauliflower, green beans)

Bring to the boil and then simmer for approximately 15 minutes or until vegetables are tender.

To serve: boiled or steamed rice, poppadums, coriander, chutney, natural yoghurt.

Blend or process until smooth using a blender. You can also push through a sieve if you don’t have a blender.

Heat oil in pan and add onion, garlic and carrot. Saute for two minutes then add spices, cooking gently for five minutes or until the spices darken and almost stick to the pan.

Serve into bowls and top with a dollop of cream, sour cream, natural yoghurt or marscapone cheese, then sprinkle with chopped chives and serve with Cheese Toast.

Add chopped mixed vegetables, stirring to coat them in the spices, then cover with coconut cream and a little water if necessary. Cover pan and simmer until vegetables are tender (around 20 mins), then add broccoli and frozen peas and cook for further 15 mins. Serve with rice and accompaniments.

CHEESE TOAST Sprinkle a slice of bread with parmesan cheese, then using a knife, smooth over the cheese with butter or margarine - the cheese will mix into the butter. Make sure you butter right to the crust. Then flip the bread over and do the same to the other side. Fry in a little olive oil for 30 seconds on each side. Remove from the pan when the bread starts to toast and serve.

Winter

wellness

tips

We asked the KIDS team their tips for staying well during winter...

Take some time to rest and recover. Our kids need time to rest and recharge. The holidays are a chance to take a break from hectic weekly schedules and have some quite time at home with the family. A well rested child is far less likely to pick up the winter bugs. - Renee

1. Stay in bed! Preferably with an electric blanket! 2. Remember to open windows when the sun is out and let in light. Being holed up in the winter can mean a dark, damp feeling house with no air circulation. Sometimes you don’t realise that it’s actually warmer outside than inside. 3. Walk on the beach in Winter. 4. Don’t forget to drink water.

Olive Leaf extract, Vitamin C and some sun. - Kellie

- Simone

Sleep! Slow down and rest. School holidays is a great opportinity to do this. - Toni

EAT WELL, DRINK PLENTY OF WATER AND GET PLENTY OF REST TO WARD OFF THE WINTER COLD/FLU - LOUISA

Make sure you eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables... Great to assist your immune system! - Jackie

If you feel a sore throat or cold starting. Make a strong hot tea with freshly cut ginger, fresh lemon juice and slices, and honey. Drink a few cups each day. Kids might just sip on a teaspoon of honey. Slow down, rest and get plenty of sleep. - Michelle What are your tips? Share them with us on Facebook or Twitter

This school of fish represents an average primary school in Australia with 840 pupils… most of the fish are made from old books because most kids in school can read, write and spell words. The coloured fish… are the dyslexic kids (10%)… and have been made by dyslexic kids from all over Australia. Please read our names and ages and find out what we are good at. We learn differently but if you give us a chance we can be fabulous.” There are origami worksheets and recycled paper for visitors to fold their own fish.
