Hong Kong is a story in three parts: Hong Kong Island, Kowloon Peninsula and the New Territories. Together, they’re a combination of modern skyscrapers and ancient temples, vibrant markets, beaches, mountains and deserted islands. Then there is the shopping; designer fashion, electrical goods and charming local souvenirs. It is also renowned as a gourmet’s paradise, with an abundance of exceptional cafés and restaurants.

Kowloon is a bustling mixture of shops, fantastic bars, pubs, restaurants and markets. It is connected to Hong Kong Island by three tunnels and the MTR, but a trip across Victoria Harbour on a Star Ferry is the ideal way to commute between the two.

Home to the original settlement of the Hong Kong territory, Victoria, Hong Kong Island is the city’s financial and business hub. Home to charming colonial buildings and modern skyscrapers, the island has a plethora of restaurants, bars and shops.

Be tempted by the Temple Street Night Markets and wander along Nathan Road for its vast range of shopping. Take a stroll through the tranquil Nan Lian Garden.

Macau

Essential Experiences

Often touted as the ‘Vegas of the East’, Macau is famous for its casino scene. Even if gambling isn’t your thing, the odds are you’ll love the experience of wandering through the extravagant casinos. A former Portuguese colony, the region’s Mediterranean influence is evident through its beautiful fortresses, baroque-style churches and delicious food.

Built in the 16th century and the oldest temple in Macau, A-ma Temple is one of three famous Buddha halls.

Today, Macau thrives on old-meets-new characteristics, its recent additions complementing the peninsula’s historic legacies – now protected by UNESCO World Heritage status. Lovingly restored colonial architectural designs such as Barra Square, Lilau Square, St Augustine’s Square, Senado Square, Cathedral Square and the Ruins of St Paul’s continue to attract visitors. So too the Chinese treasures of Na Tcha Temple, Lou Kau Mansion and the much photographed A-Ma Temple on the waterfront.

Walk across the Mount Fortress and visit the five storey Museum of Macau. Ride the elevator to the observation deck on the 58th floor of Macau Tower for unforgettable 360-degree views of the glittering Macau skyline.

Dwarfing many of the historic sites are the shapes and figures of a new Macau with its soaring 338 metre Macau Tower and modern Macau Convention Centre plus a growing number of sophisticated shopping centres, ritzy international hotels and restaurants. Macanese food is a fusion of Portuguese, African, Southeast Asian and Chinese cooking. Both on the peninsula and along the neon-lit Cotai Strip, there are 19 Michelin-starred restaurants in Macau.

Sample unique Macanese cuisine including egg tarts, almond cakes and pork buns.

Macau – where old meets new and East meets West.

YANGTZE RIVER CRUISING

Yangtze River Cruising

Daning River

Discover dramatic scenery, stunning beauty and man-made wonders as you set sail along China’s largest river, the Yangtze. Admire the magnificent river landscapes as you cruise through the Three Gorges. The shortest and most dramatic of the Three Gorges is the Qutang Gorge which has an entrance guarded by two mountains – Chijia Shan (Red Passage Mountain) and Baiyan Shan (White Salt Mountain). Known as ‘Witches Gorge’, Wu Gorge features 12 unique peaks which are often hidden in swirls of mist. The third gorge, Xiling is the Yangtze’s main gorge, and is the longest and deepest with towering cliffs rising to over 1200 metres. Marvel at the enormity of the Three Gorges Dam Project which involved 30,000 labourers during construction. The project was completed in 2009, and saw 20 towns and approximately 1.3 million people relocated. This extraordinary monumental engineering feat provides a large portion of China’s energy. Yangtze River cruises depart and conclude in either Chongqing or Yichang. Chongqing is a mountain city which clings to the steep cliffs at the confluence of the Yangtze and Jailing Rivers. Yichang is a sleepy town situated at the entrance to the Xiling Gorge and has been transformed into the economic and cultural centre of Hubei province since the Three Gorges Dam Project.

CHONGQING This mountain city clings to steep cliffs at the confluence of the Yangtze and Jialing Rivers – your journey will start or end here.

LESSER THREE GORGES & DANING RIVER Board small river boats for an excursion along the Daning through the ‘lesser three gorges’, surrounded by the cliffs of Longman Xia, local rural scenes and hear the sound of chattering monkeys.

SHENNONG STREAM

THREE GORGES DAM PROJECT

Some cruises include a trip on this delightful tributary. To reach the clear waters upstream you will first travel by ferry, then transfer to local ‘pea-pod’ boats where experienced local trackers pole the vessels through shallow waters.

This extraordinary engineering feat, which involved the flooding of 20 towns and the relocation of about 1.3 million people, provides a large portion of China’s energy. The project was completed in 2009.

This middle gorge, the name of which means ‘witches’ in English, is best known for twelve unique peaks, often hidden in swirls of mist. The most famous, Shennu Feng (Goddess Peak), resembles a kneeling maiden.

XILING GORGE This is the longest and the deepest of the famous Three Gorges with towering cliffs rising to over 1,200 metres. It is actually comprised of seven smaller gorges, all named after ancient legends such as ‘Yellow Ox’, ‘Bright Moon’ and ‘Lantern Shadow’.

YICHANG Situated at the entrance to Xiling Gorge, this once sleepy town has been transformed by the Three Gorges Dam Project into the economic and cultural centre of the Western Hubei Province.
