How to mock-up a lanyard Using Adobe® Illustrator®
Step 1 When creating a mock-up it is important to consider the following: • SCALE/SIZE - the logo and product should be to scale and at the correct size (eg: 100% or 50% or 25%). • POSITION - where can the logo be decorated? Most suppliers advise the position/size on their websites. • PERSPECTIVE - logo to follow the natural angle, curve and shear of the product photo. • REALISM - logo and product to look as if already decorated.
Step 2 Read the brief carefully. JOB 1: Product: Lanyard Bootlace Style Product Size: 900mmW x 12mmH Product Colour: PMS 368 Logo: text “LANYARD MOCK-UP” Logo Size: 8mm HIGH Logo Colour: Black Logo Position: Repeat/25mm gap Logo Position: 1 Side Only Decoration Method: Screen print Extra: Simple J Hook
Step 3 In Adobe Illustrator, File>New… Name: lanyard_mock_up_art_approval.ai Size: 900mm WIDE x 210mm HIGH. Colour Mode: CMYK. Click OK
Step 4 Select the rectangle tool from the tool bar and single click the far left page edge. Type 900 mm for the WIDTH and 12 mm for the HEIGHT. Click OK

How to mock-up a lanyard (cont.) Step 5 While the rectangle is still selected, change the lanyard fill/stroke colours to PMS 368/no stroke. Look at the bottom of the tool bar (this shows the fill/stroke colours). The square need to be on top and the stroke to be below. Clicking the square will bring it to the front. Window>Swatch Libraries>Colour Books>PANTONE solid coated. Click the down arrow to reveal a drop down box. Select Show Find Field. Type 368 in the find field. Click the highlighted PMS colour. Click the stroke in the tool bar and click the None (/) button. The lanyard colour should now be PMS 368/no stroke. Select the black arrow tool and click anywhere on the page to deselect the rectangle. Click down arrow

Step 6 Select the zoom tool and zoom up to the far left side of the rectangle. Select the type tool and single click below the rectangle (not on the rectangle). Type LANYARD MOCK-UP. Select the black arrow tool and change the font to something clean (Window>Type>Character). Change type to black (Window>Swatches). Click black. Type>Create Outlines. Increase type size to 8mm high (Window>Transform). The Chain icon should show “arms” above & below (Constrains W x H). Click chain to activate the dashes. Move type onto the rectangle, close to the far left. Select the rectangle tool. Single click, touching the right side of the “P”. Type 25 mm W x 25 mm H. Click OK.

How to mock-up a lanyard (cont.) Step 7 Select both square and type with the black arrow tool while holding down Shift. Now change to the white arrow tool and click/hold the bottom left corner point of the “L”. While dragging to the right, start to hold down CMD/OPT/Shift (PC - ctrl/alt/shift). Release click once you reach the right edge of the square. You have now created a 25mm gap. White Arrow Click/ Hold

Press CMD/D (PC - CTRL/D) 5 times. This will duplicate the type and square along the lanyard.
Step 8 Using the white arrow tool click on the squares and press delete. Select the type tool and type (or paste) the brief under the lanyard. You could also include a placed photograph of the Simple J Hook image (File>Place). Clear artwork aids better communication and helps the job run smoothly from begining to end. Super Fast… Read the brief carefully. File>New… CMYK. Document Size: 900mmW x 210mmH. Rectangle tool, single click far left page edge. Type 900 mm H x 12 mm H. Apply PMS 368 to fill and no colour to stroke. Zoom close to the left side of the rectangle. Type Tool, single click and type LANYARD MOCK-UP. Select White arrow tool, change font (Window>Type>Character). Change type to black (Window>Swatches). Type>Create Outlines. Increase type to 8mm high (Window>Transform). Chain to have arms above & below. Rectangle tool, single click touching right side of “P”- 25mm x 25mm. Black arrow tool, shift/click type & square. Change to white arrow tool and click/hold bottom corner point of “L”. Drag right then hold down CMD/OPT/Shift till you snap to the right of square. CMD/D 5 times. White arrow tool, click & delete the 7 squares. Type tool, insert job details. Insert helpful product photos.
