How to redraw a logo Using Adobe® Illustrator®

Step 1 File>New… Name the file. Size: A4. Units: Millimeters. Orientation: Landscape or portrait. Colour Mode: CMYK. Never in RGB. Reason: RGB never converts well to CMYK. Especially black. Raster Effects: High (300ppi). Preview Mode: Default. Click OK.

Step 2 File>Place… Locate the file. Click Link and Template. Click Place.

The placed artwork will automatically be set to 50% transparency.

Window>Layers… The placed logo will automatically be assigned to the bottom locked layer (delete this layer once redraw is complete). The layer above (Layer 1) will be where the logo is redrawn.

How to redraw a logo (cont.) Step 5 Select the type tool. Single click the bottom left corner of the line of type. Type the first line. Select the black arrow tool, click the type. Window>Type>Character. Identify the original artwork font (Helvetica Bold) and assign the font to the new type. If you can not identify the font, use www.whatthefont.com (how to use whatthefont.com is covered in another topic). Increase the font size to match the placed art.

Move the type using the black arrow tool until it aligns perfectly above the original type. Repeat Step 5 for the 2nd line of type.

Step 6 View>Show rulers. Click inside the ruler and drag out guides from the top and side. Position the guides with the edge and centre of the circle. This will help accuracy. Select the zoom tool from the tool bar to see the edge more clearly is needed.

Step 7 View>Smart Guides + View>Snap to Point. To ensure accuracy when redrawing the shapes. View>Outlines. No fill or stroke colours will be visible, only construction lines.

Select the ellipse tool. If you can not see it in the tool bar, hold down Option (PC - Alt) and click the different shapes as it will cycle through the shapes. Click and drag from top left to bottom right as per diagram.

Select the pen tool. Click the outline of the triangle as per diagram (hold down the Shift key only when you make the 2nd click). The 4th click joins to the 1st click and completes/closes the triangle shape. The pen tool should snap to the edges when each click is being made.

Step 10 Select the rectangle tool. Click on the centre line while holding down option/shift (PC - alt/shift) and slowly drag down to the bottom right until you touch the edge. Release the click. Select the black arrow tool to edit and align correctly. Select the star tool. Click on the centre line while holding down cmd/option/shift (PC - ctrl/alt/shift) and slowly drag down to the bottom right till you touch the edge. Release the click. Select the black arrow tool to edit and align correctly.

How to redraw a logo (cont.) Step 11 Using your black arrow tool, click each element one at a time and assign the different fill colours. There will be no stroke colours in this redraw.

Step 12 View>Guides>Hide Guides + Select>All + Type>Create Outlines + View>Outlines + Windows>Layers (drag the bottom layer into the trash can icon - as per diagram).
