HSP4203 INTRODUCTION TO HISPANIC STUDIES Course Programme 2017-2018 Course Organiser Dr Patricia D’Allemand Email: [email protected] Room: Arts One 1.22 Office Hours: Monday 2-4pm Course Description This module provides an introduction to the literatures, cultures, and histories of Spain, Catalonia, Portugal, and Latin America, as well as to Spanish Linguistics. Drawing on a variety of texts and media, it explores key moments and themes across the pre-modern, modern, and contemporary periods. This module is accessible to both post A Level and ab-initio students, as materials will be available in English translation. The entire module counts towards the QMUL Model. Prerequisites Enrolment in a language module in Hispanic Studies or reading knowledge of Spanish Contact Hours and Independent Study Lectures: 1 hour per week through the year (22 hours) Seminars: 1 hour per week through the year (22 hours) Lecturers’ advice and feedback hours available weekly for one-to-one support Student Independent Learning Time: 256 hours Total Notional Study Hours: 300 hours Timetable Lectures: Wednesdays 9-10am Seminars: Wednesdays 10-11am and 11-12 Check in your timetable which seminar group, A or B, you have been assigned to. Please note room changes between terms if applicable. It is not possible to change seminars or to attend the wrong seminar. Assessment Description This module is assessed by coursework only. You must complete four pieces of assessment worth 25% of the mark each. Assessment Schedule 1. A 2,000-word essay on a question on Culture and Society in Modern Spain due on Sunday 12 November 2017 by 23:55 2. A 2,000-word essay on a question on Culture and Society in Brazil and Portugal due on Friday 22 December 2017 by 23:55 3. A 2,000-word text commentary on a question on Culture and Society in Medieval Spain due on Sunday 24 February 2018 by 23:55 4. A 2,000-word set of exercises on linguistics due on Sunday 29 April by 23:55 Questions for each individual piece of assessment are provided in Assessment Information in QMplus. Guidelines for submission and marking criteria are available in Assignment Questions in QMplus. Preparation for Classes You are expected to buy the set texts for each topic (unless it is indicated that they will be provided on QMPlus) and read them in advance of the first class on the relevant topic. You are expected to read and use for assessment the Spanish originals of the set texts unless you are doing Introductory Spanish (ab initio). If this the case, you will use a translation into English. If you are able to read Portuguese, you are encouraged to read the set text for Culture and Society in Brazil and Portugal in (or with) the original. You are also expected to prepare exercises for the Linguistics (Knowing Spanish) section of the course as indicated in the relevant teaching block.
