Leona on stage at the Empire for the launch of BBC Radio 1’s Hackney Weekend 2012 – the majority of tickets will be allocated to residents

LEONA Lewis took to the stage at Hackney Empire to help launch monster gig Hackney Weekend 2012, live on BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra.

The broadcaster’s biggestever, free, ticketed, live music event is being held to celebrate the London 2012 Games. Radio 1 has chosen

homegrown Hackney heroes – X Factor winner Leona; world champion triple jumper Phillips Idowu; DJ Trevor Nelson; and Brit Award winner Plan B – to

champion the event on 23 and 24 June next year, which is being organised with the Council on Hackney Marshes. Leona, who still has a home

in the borough, said: “I really think it’s going to be embraced as something positive coming to Hackney.” Turn to pages 8&9

ACROSS THE POND ONDON Fields Lido will be the training venue for the US Paralympic swimming team, it has been announced. The Council and the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) signed the prestigious contract on 26 May. It means that for a few hours a day, the elite squad will train in London’s largest outdoor

L

heated pool in the run up to and during the 2012 Olympic & Paralympic Games. Cabinet Member for Health, Social Care and Culture, Cllr Jonathan McShane, said: “This is great news for Hackney and testament to the quality of the Lido and its facilities. The Council is working to ensure that we secure as many benefits for Hackney as possible

from London 2012. Now, local people can look forward to seeing Paralympic swimmers train and children of all abilities will receive coaching from top international athletes.” Julie O’Neill, Team Leader of Sport Performance USOC, added: “We are thrilled to have the use of a venue of this calibre in the lead up to the Games.”

The Council has been in discussions with the USOC and secured a number of benefits for the community from the deal including coaching expertise for local children of all abilities; and opportunities to meet athletes. Olympic and Paralympic memorabilia will be donated to form part of Hackney’s 2012 archive. More detailed

information about the community benefits and the use of Hackney’s GLL-run leisure centres will be available in the run up to the 2012 Games.

Who are you calling chicken? Sebright pupils with Chaz and the chickens at Hackney City Farm

PUPILS from Sebright Primary School have been out and about exploring the borough – with an unusual classmate. On 18 May they visited Broadway Market and took

a trip on the Regent’s Canal, before arriving at Hackney City Farm. Youngsters were joined by Chaz, a puppet ‘from another planet’, who was particularly keen to get to know the farm’s chickens and pigs.

Chaz is part of a nationwide project running over the next 16 months which aims to help promote the idea of welcoming the world to Hackney for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Chaz is currently based at Sebright primary in Audrey Street, E2, where pupils are working with the puppet’s makers Kinetika, and Hackneybased arts youth organisation, Immediate Theatre.

ORE than 50 residents came a step closer to offering support to a child in need when they attended events as part of Fostering Fortnight from 16 to 29 May. An information stall was set up outside Hackney Central Library on 26 May, and in the evening there was a Town Hall event where experienced foster carers

M

gave first hand accounts of living with children in local authority care. Fostering Services staff answered questions and outlined the assistance available for all carers, including educational support for children; extensive training for carers; therapeutic support for foster children, carers and their own children; and details of professional fees.

Case study: Fostering teenagers Foster carer Louise Groves specialises in looking after teenagers. She said: “People are often amazed that I spend my time looking after teenagers who aren’t even mine, but it’s the best job I’ve ever had. So often we focus on the stereotype of teenagers being hard work, but in my experience they are fun and fascinating individuals. “If you’re patient, have good communication skills, don’t give up easily and enjoy the company of young people, then fostering could be right up your street.”

Cllr Rita Krishna, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, said: “It’s heartening to see there are lots of people in Hackney who are considering providing a stable environment for children in local authority care. The Council provides an excellent support service for potential foster carers to help them make the most of a challenging yet rewarding experience.” The events were linked to a national campaign, which saw Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, praising two Hackney foster carers for their work, while urging more Londoners to give youngsters the safe and supportive homes they need while they are unable to live with their families.

The evening fostering event

There is a shortage of 2,000 foster carers in London, and a particular shortage of people willing to take on teenagers. The next fostering information event takes place on 30 June, from 5pm to 7pm, at Hackney Town Hall, Mare Street.

Ready to respond Cllr Fajana-Thomas, Speaker of Hackney, with the 2010/11 Speaker, Cllr Sally Mulready (above); the new Speaker with her son and consort, Emmanuel Tunde Taiwo II (below)

HACKNEY resident of two decades, with an agenda for ‘hard work and good communication’, has become the borough’s 111th civic representative. Cllr Susan FajanaThomas was elected as the Speaker of Hackney for 2011/12, at the Council’s Annual General Meeting on 18 May. Originally from Nigeria, where she worked as an award-winning broadcast journalist, Cllr FajanaThomas, 47, chose to settle in Hackney 20 years ago. She found the borough welcoming and accommodating. Despite the early challenges Cllr FajanaThomas experienced trying to re-establish her professional career in the UK, she was determined to study and pursue her interests and now works as a Community Engagement

A

Communicator for a Metropolitan Police Authority-funded board. In the last 15 years, she has been extremely active in the local community, including working as a mentor on the London Refugee and Asylum Mentoring Scheme; as Vice Chair of Stoke Newington Housing Panel; and as the Chair of Howard Road Resource Centre management committee. She remembers her father helping people within their community with a great passion during her childhood, and credits his optimistic and energetic approach as having influenced her various community activities in adult life. She said: “My father taught me from a young age that no success is complete without helping others.” Mother-of-

two, Cllr Fajana-Thomas was elected as a Stoke Newington Central ward councillor in 2010. And says she is ‘honoured and privileged’ to now be the Speaker of Hackney. She intends to make an outreach agenda the core of her term, bringing her professional skills to the role. She said: “I will work to strengthen community cohesion by building trust and engaging all community groups through inclusiveness and participation.” With support from her son, Emmanuel Tunde Taiwo II, 18, who will be her official consort as Speaker, Cllr FajanaThomas wants her time in the role to be an example of new ideas and civic engagement at its best. She intends to use social media to connect with residents, particularly young people.

She added: “I will promote and participate in as many events as possible, such as youth activities; activities for older people; business openings; community group and voluntary organisation events. Above all, I will be an approachable, hardworking, communicative and responsive Speaker.” Every year, the Speaker chooses a charity to fundraise for during their year in office. Cllr Fajana-Thomas’ chosen charity will be officially announced at the next Full Council meeting.

From Holly Street to Hollywood

Idris Elba in character as BBC detective DCI John Luther

T the time of our interview, actor Idris Elba is in London reprising his role as the brilliant but troubled detective ‘Luther’, for the second series of the hit BBC drama of the same name. He reveals this series sees a departure from the caseper-episode format, and instead tells two distinctive two-part stories spread over four hours. However, the brooding cinematography that helped define the first instalment is still very much present, with London appearing ‘almost as one of the characters’. Much of the filming took place in Hackney, with locations to look out for in the new series including Bateman’s Row, Hoxton Street, Beck Road, Curtain Road, Old Street, Paul Street and Boundary Street. Filming last year carried on despite heavy snowfalls.

A

For Elba, the show is a homecoming of sorts, as the first 11 years of his life were spent in the borough. “It was the best time of my life,” says the 38-yearold actor who grew up on the old Holly Street estate and went to Queensbridge Primary School. He adds: “Hackney is very dear to me, it was where I learned to ride my bike and London Fields was my park of choice. I used to ride my bike around Haggerston, down the ramps and along the canal – that’s what all the kids did. I was really devastated when we left and moved to Canning Town.” So, was it exciting to come back to the borough to film Luther? “It’s always good to come home whenever I’m in London. When I’m filming, I quite often jump in the car and drive around Dalston, which is my old stomping ground. It’s absolutely no surprise to me that the area

is now one of the trendiest places in London – Hackney has always been cool,” he says. Idris’s big break came in 2002, playing drugdealer-turned-businessman Stringer Bell in ‘The Wire’. I ask him about the early comparisons made between the bleak housing projects of Baltimore that were so vividly depicted in the HBO series and Hackney. He says: “I think there are some comparisons although England’s problem is nothing like that in America.

In both places, young people find comfort in gangs and once that happens, their lives change. That is the comparison that some people were making, but I think Hackney is a borough that cares for people, you go to Hackney and there is a sense of pride.” I ask Idris what advice he would give to young people in Hackney who aspire to his success. He says: “Education is the key – stick with it and don’t let your guard down, the more you know about what

Hackney was where I learned to ride my bike and London Fields was my park of choice you want to do the better. I’d still encourage young people to keep an eye out for open auditions but it’s an interesting point, if I was growing up now, I’d have made a film – get a couple of mates and a mobile phone and make people see your talent, tell the story of where you’re from. There’s a lot of opportunity if you help make it happen. “Kids from here can achieve, they need to say ‘Yo, I’m from Hackney and I’m proud’. Like JayZ, he’s from Brooklyn and he says how proud he is. People start to shun the bad things that other people say about a place and the whole community gets behind it.”

Idris tells me about an event that has made him even prouder of the place he grew up. The owners of a new affordable housing scheme in Andre Street, E8, named one of the new blocks Elba House and invited him to open it in February. He says: “You can give me all the parts in the world, but that means so much. I’ve lived all over the place but the only place I recognise as where I come from is Hackney.”

THE GREEN GENIE

All your recycling questions answered Q: I’m really confused by all the different recycling symbols on packaging these days. How can I easily find out if something is recyclable? A: Retailers including Tesco, Sainsburys and Asda have introduced new labelling on their packaging to help identify whether it can be recycled. Any items labelled ‘widely recycled’, ‘check local recycling’ or ‘check locally for kerb side’ can be recycled in Hackney through the green box scheme or in communal bins on estates. Anything labelled ‘recycle at larger stores with carrier bags: not at kerb side’ or ‘not currently recycled’ cannot be recycled in Hackney and could contaminate recycling. The On-Pack Recycling Label scheme aims to deliver a simpler, UK-wide, recycling message on packaging. Launched by the British Retail Consortium (BRC) with support from WRAP, the scheme is administered through a company called OPRL Ltd. Hannah, mum of ninemonth-old Otis, said: “Otis likes real nappies because they are good for his bottom and good for the planet.” A workshop where parents could learn to make their own

wet bag or washable wipes also proved extremely popular. The Council offers a £54 voucher to residents who wish to use real cotton nappies. Parents and carers can use their voucher to buy nappies from participating businesses across London, or to get started with a nappy laundry service.

Let yourself get nettled

Ladybirds feed on the aphids found on nettle plants

www.hackney.gov.uk

A CHARITY is urging Londoners to take a fresh look at nettles – before pulling them up as troublesome weeds. The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) wants to remind people the plants are a valuable resource for birds, animals and insects. Flying insects and aphids feeding off the

nettle patches in turn help support ladybirds and migrating swifts or swallows, as well as sparrows seeking protein for their chicks. In late summer, nettle seeds are food for many birds, such as house sparrows, chaffinches, and bullfinches. Nettles are also a magnet for other insecteaters like hedgehogs,

shrews, frogs and toads. Certain moths also like nettles, as do many of the UK’s most colourful and best known butterflies, such as the small tortoiseshell and peacock. Their larvae feed in groups in silken tents woven at the top of nettle stems. The RSPB suggests cultivating nettle patches in sunny corners of gardens or

green spaces, and thinking twice before removing them – trimming or mowing can easily manage them. For curious cooks they can also be used in soups and stews instead of spinach.

Going wild in Clapton Square CLAPTON Square is becoming a wildlife haven in the heart of Hackney, thanks to the efforts of local volunteers. Clapton Square User Group members raised money at a Halloween event last year to buy materials to make bat boxes for the square. Local furnituremaker and user group member, Dan Gritten, made six homes for the furry flying mammals, which will now be put up by parks staff. Bats usually roost in cracks and crevices in trees or buildings, but the renovation of parks and houses in recent years means there are fewer places for them to call home. Therefore the extra places to

FREE! Win tickets to The Win a pair Four Stages of Cruelty of tickets ‘The city is a beast. You’ve gotta ride it or it will ride you.’ So London is described by one of the lead characters in an acclaimed new production from Simply8 theatre company. ‘The Four Stages of Cruelty’ is an original production from writer and director duo Adam Brace and Sebastian Armesto that brings to life the squalor, brutality and vice of the streets of Georgian London. Based on a series of etchings by the English artist William Hogarth, the play traces the story of orphan Tom Nero as he descends into an increasingly murky world of violence and debauchery. Hogarth’s prints were originally designed as a form of moral instruction to the working classes of the capital

and Simple8 effectively animates the artist’s cautionary tale with the use of local landmarks, innovative design, live music and appropriate amounts of grime, booze and blood and guts. ‘The Four Stages of Cruelty’ is at Arcola Theatre, 24 Ashwin Street, E8 3DL, until 24 June. education News in brief ‘Outstanding’

Taking steps for health

A LONDON Fields children’s centre has secured an ‘outstanding’ rating in its latest Ofsted inspection. The Ann Tayler Children’s Centre in Triangle Road, At the children’s centre received the highest score possible from the education watchdog after a two-day assessment in March. Inspectors praised the centre for its ‘highly integrated and coordinated work across health and family services’; and added that parents and carers ‘cannot praise enough the considerable impact its work has had on their lives’. Noting the friendliness and enthusiasm of staff, Ofsted described the centre as having a ‘central place in the local community’. It caters for youngsters aged up to five-years-old and works with two other children’s centres in the area, Mapledene and Morningside. It also provides a range of services for parents and the local community and offers outreach work such as employment advice. Kaushika Amin, Interim Head, said: “We are delighted with the Ofsted report and particularly that parents spoke so highly of the centre – we pride ourselves on involving parents and carers in our work and are pleased that this has shone through.”

HACKNEY pupils set the pace last month in a bid to get fitter and happier with a daily walk. Getting their families to ditch cars and buses, the students were showing their support for Walk to School Week, from

pupils breakfasts if they walked in, while others continued the project in the classroom, holding a photography and banner design competition to mark the week. The Council also offers nine

Around 40 sports sessions are also set to be held in Hackney. Cllr McShane, Cabinet Member for Health Social Care and Culture, said: “Through Chairs in the Community anyone can get a taster of

Paralympic sports.” Helen Turner added: “This project is important in developing an infrastructure that will support many young people to participate in sport and also help develop the next generation of Paralympians.

Good luck from the stars HACKNEY-BORN stars have sent good luck messages to students ahead of the exam season. The Learning Trust, which runs the borough’s schools on behalf of the Council, contacted some of Hackney’s old boys and girls who have gone on to successful careers on stage, screen or in sport. Former Our Lady’s convent pupil Freema Agyeman, now of ‘Dr Who’ and ‘Law and Order’ fame, said: “Heads down and study hard. Boyfriends, girlfriends, going out and having a laugh will still be available to you after your exams. But this moment is short – so take the opportunity, use it wisely. Whatever you choose to do in life, education will always give you a solid foundation. Give your future as much potential as you can.” Patsy Palmer, ‘EastEnders’ star and former Haggerston Girls School pupil, added: “Having been there myself and as a mum, I know exam time can be extremely stressful. Try to keep calm and stick to your revision timetable and it will all be worth it in the end.” Another ‘EastEnders’ star, Arinze Kene, formerly of St Scholastica’s, said: “Good luck to all the students in Hackney currently revising hard for their exams.” ‘Skins’ actress Lily Loveless, tennis player Anna Keothavong, and actor Adam Deacon all sent good luck messages to Hackney pupils as well.

A St Matthias star Former St Matthias player Mete with the under-nine team (above) and signing autographs after the match (below)

By Tayla-Destiny Vanriel, aged nine

T Matthias Club’s under-nines football team recently had some support from a former member who now plays for Europe’s top sides. The team’s third match of the season against Reachout FC was watched by supporters including VIP guest Mete Serdar Coban, an ex-member of St Matthias’ FC and Inter Milan’s under-16s squad. He gave a talk at half time, and at the end of play gave signatures to each player with a message: ‘good luck with your future’.

S

St Matthias played really well, but unfortunately the end score on 28 May was 2-1 to Reachout. Mete was born in Cyprus and came to England in 1995 as a baby. St Matthias was the first team he played for. During a summer holiday to Istanbul, he took part in a trial with Turkish side Galatasaray

SK and was selected for a tournament in Milan. He was noticed by Inter, where he spent several years. Although not confirmed as Hackney Today went to press, Mete looks set to be joining another very big European side’s reserve team soon. A professional footballer himself, his favourite player is FC

21

Barcelona’s Lionel Messi. But he wants to be like Brazilian player Roberto Carlos. Now that Mete is a professional player he must stick to a very strict diet. He can’t have fruit, but can strangely eat vegetables. He can also have meat and nuts. Mete seems very polite and it looks like he has the potential to be a perfect football player – and a good role model to children and young adults.

NEWS IN BRIEF More than just an adventure NOT sure university is the right route for you? Want to travel during your gap year but don’t want a gap in your CV? There’s more than one way to skin a cat and going abroad can give you valuable life skills and confidence. Poke around and you can even find someone else to pay. There are many ways in which you can gain a fulfilling understanding of a country. For example, if you are planning to go to university then why not opt for a degree that includes a year of international study? If you’re not intending to go to university or you have chosen a course that does not offer a year of international study, you could focus on community development and apply for volunteer work placements in Africa and Asia. If you don’t want to volunteer your services for free there are also lots of choices for paid work while you are away exploring the globe. The YH World website has loads of information and links to other organisations that can make your trip abroad much more than an extended holiday. For info visit: www.yhworld.co.uk/volunteer_abroad; www.yhworld.co.uk/study_abroad; and: www.yhworld.co.uk/work_abroad

This page... has been compiled with help from staff and volunteers at YH World – a social enterprise that produces a website full of info about events, courses, and general happenings in Hackney. They aim to make sure young people don’t miss out – and most of the stuff they include is free to take part in. They are always looking for young journalists and undercover reporters. Apprenticeships, are they the new degree? By Lee Andrew, aged 22

ARE apprenticeships the way to go? With university fees skyrocketing, young people fresh out of college may need to be looking at alternative options for a higher education. Certain employers look

at a degree as an academic must-have. In secondary school teachers told me that you go to college, then university and end up earning a top salary. But graduates are not necessarily the most valuable candidate to potential employers. Many take on unpaid work experience to

compete with those who have more practical skills. And when I was at college, I was put off by the money I’d owe after a degree. Apprenticeships bring considerable value to employers, individuals, and the economy. The National Apprenticeship Service currently has around 80,000 employers

offering apprenticeships, providing young people with experience in a real working environment while earning an income. If I had the choice of an apprenticeship or university, I would choose an apprenticeship without any doubt. I want to do something that will make me a good candidate to

potential employers. What employers really look for is skills and experience. With an apprenticeship it appears you are getting the best of both worlds.

Independent lives MORE than 80 deaf, hard of hearing, disabled and older people have taken part in a series of events about services that help them live independently in Hackney. The aim was to discuss the services currently on offer and to get ideas on what else might be needed. Independent living is about disabled people having the same level of choice, control and freedom in their daily lives as any other person. This

can become a reality by giving people the right support, access, advocacy and opportunity. Cllr Jonathan McShane, Cabinet Member for Health, Social Care and Culture, said: “The events really got discussion going and produced valuable information. This will influence the way the Council provides services for disabled people, and the way that the Council works with them.” The events, which took

place from 21 to 26 May, were part of a Councilfunded project, which is being led by residents, to build a full picture of independent living services in the borough. Findings from the project will be

presented to the Council in early autumn.

RESIDENTS are being urged to protect their children from measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) after an increase in measles cases in London. Between January and April, a third of the 334 laboratory confirmed cases of measles nationwide affected Londoners, according to NHS East London and the City. Dr Jim Lawrie, an East London GP, said: “Measles is a serious infectious disease that is extremely contagious and can cause pneumonia, brain damage, damage to eyesight and sometimes death. “I urge parents to ensure their children have the MMR immunisation at 13 months, repeated again before going to primary school. Teenagers planning to leave home to go to university should also have the MMR if they missed out on this jab or did not complete the full course of jabs.” If a parent or carer suspects a child has measles, they are advised to keep away from other children and adults, phone a GP and seek advice before going to the surgery. On arrival, inform reception staff this is a suspected measles case. MMR jabs are available from local GPs.

Keep an eye on yours A TEAM of researchers is hoping Afro-Caribbean people in Hackney can help with work to reduce preventable sight loss, particularly related to glaucoma. The Royal National Institute of the Blind, health professionals, and research team Shared Intelligence want to talk to Afro-Caribbeans, aged 40 to 65, who have the eye disorder. People of African descent, including those from the Caribbean community, are at greater risk of developing glaucoma. There are around 2,000 confirmed cases in the borough, but another 6,000 people are suspected of being at high risk of developing the eye disease. Charity Social Eyes is supporting the research and hosting a forum for visually impaired people on 7 June, from 11am to 3pm, at The Old Fire Station, Brooke Road, N16. Glaucoma is an eye disorder in which the optic nerve suffers damage, permanently impacting vision in the affected eye and progressing to complete blindness if untreated. Price of travel

ACKNEY has always been a thoroughfare between central London and the rest of the country. In 1555, an Act was passed making parish authorities responsible for the roads within their boundaries. It stipulated that residents provide four days labour on local roads under the supervision of the Surveyor of Highways, an unpaid officer who served for a year. Parishes that failed to carry out these duties could be fined. However, maintaining roads that carried a lot of traffic was still a problem. In 1713, the poor state of Ermine Street – now the A10 – between Shoreditch and Enfield was the subject of a petition to Parliament by residents from the seven parishes it passed through. The solution to the issue of maintaining roads that

H

went through more than one parish came with the establishment, by an Act of Parliament, of turnpike trusts, which charged travellers a toll. The first one in Hackney was the Stamford Hill Turnpike Trust established in 1713. The Hackney Turnpike Trust was set up some years later in 1738. At the end of the 18th

century, there were six main tollgates in Hackney: Kingsland Gate, on the west side of Kingsland Road, just south of Dalston Junction; Stamford Hill, at the junction between Stamford Hill and Clapton Common; Clapton, at the Upper Clapton Road junction with Lea Bridge Road; Hackney Road at

In a series of articles published in the Hackney Gazette in 1915, George Grocott, the first town clerk of Hackney, reminisces about the tollgates as they were in 1856. He reports on an incident he once witnessed at the Kingsland Gate: “A costermonger in a donkey barrow shouted out in a stentorian voice, ‘Nar, then you old Blunderbore, come out of that there den and open the gate for the Duke o’ Hoxton. Come, wake up timber head, cos I’m in a hurry’. With these elegant expressions he winked at a couple of bystanders, who grinned approval as the exasperated tollman came out muttering doubtful compliments and opened the gate, while the coster remarked as a parting shot, ‘Look out, Blunderbore, or that old gridiron of yourn will damage the coat-of-arms on my kerridge’. This sort of badinage, with other vexations, was calculated to sour the temper of the mildest and most patient of men, and there is no wonder that the temper of the pike-keeper came under the head of ‘crusty’.” at different places and at different times during its history. The job of pike-keeper or tollgate-keeper was not an easy one. Understandably paying tolls was not popular and the volume of traffic was high at some of the gates. The accounts for the Hackney Turnpike Trust, which are held by Hackney Archives, reveal that in a single day – 11 March, 1784 – 236 horses; 102 coaches; 10 chaises; and 10 carts passed through the

Cambridge Heath gate. In 1864, all roads within the Metropolitan Board of Works area were freed from tolls. By 1872, the last of the turnpike trusts had been abolished and responsibility for the maintenance of roads reverted to the principal local authorities in each area – Hackney District Board of Works for Hackney and Stoke Newington, Shoreditch Vestry and South Hornsey Local Board. However there were still some private tollgates. The last one at Temple Mills was removed in 1911.

Recipes straight from the ovens at Hoxton Apprentice

THERE is still time to have your say on the future of Hackney’s libraries and archives. The borough’s eight libraries are being kept open, despite cuts in Government funding for local authorities, and the new Dalston CLR James Library and Hackney Archives is due to open later this year. The Council wants to hear what local people think of the plans set out in its draft Library and Archives Development Strategy 2011-2015. The Council is proposing to make some changes to

www.hoxtonapprentice.com

BEFORE starting at Hoxton Apprentice, Hackney resident, Lamin Ceesay, 44, had been unemployed for over six months. Throughout his life Lamin has held down a variety of jobs ranging from a shop floor assistant and market trader to painter and decorator. He has always loved cooking and had often thought about becoming a chef, but didn’t know how to go about it. Then he found out about Hoxton Apprentice, which provided him with the perfect opportunity to fulfil his lifelong ambition. Lamin joined the team in March and is now working in the kitchen as an apprentice chef, while studying towards his NVQ Level 2 in Professional Cookery. Talking about his new-found career, Lamin said: “Coming to the Hoxton Apprentice has given me a chance to try something totally different. The team here is supportive and want you to succeed. I can’t wait to see what the future brings.”

opening hours across all libraries. It also proposes to concentrate a reduced number of events and activities at the three main libraries – in Dalston, Hackney Central and Stoke Newington. Events for children will continue to be held at all libraries. The Council is also looking for people who would be willing to offer their time as volunteers in libraries. For more info, come along to a drop-in session at Hackney Central Library, from 5.30-7.30pm, on 13 June. The consultation runs until 27 June. Once all the responses have been

analysed, the findings will be made available and final proposals are set to be published later this summer.
