Construction Advisory Intermittent Overnight Closures Planned at I-5/Genesee Avenue Interchange

For Transportation Solutions During Construction

Beginning Tuesday, May 26, and throughout the week, the Interstate 5 (I-5)/Genesee Avenue northbound and southbound off-ramps will be closed intermittently from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. for construction. During this same period, there will be lane closures on I-5 and Genesee Avenue.

Modifications Planned to Improve Traffic Flow and Bicycle Access During Construction To help improve traffic conditions at the interchange during construction, Caltrans will restripe the southbound I-5 off-ramp to Genesee Avenue. The restriping will allow motorists to turn right or left from the middle lane; currently, the middle lane allows motorists to turn left or continue straight. Improvements also include installing green right-turn arrows at the onramps and adjusting traffic signal timing at the interchange. This work is tentatively planned for Wednesday and Thursday night, May 27 and 28. Bicyclists can expect to see improvements at the interchange as crews install “Share the Road” signs, paint sharrows, and post reduced speed limit signage. These modifications are part of Caltrans’ work to help improve bicyclists’ movement and safety in the area.

Construction schedules are subject to change due to weather conditions. Crews will work to minimize impacts to nearby businesses, residents, and commuters. Motorists are advised to plan their travel and avoid the area, if possible. Access for emergency vehicles will be maintained. We appreciate your patience as we work to improve the interchange.

About the Project The $105 million project will replace the existing six-lane Genesee Avenue overcrossing with a ten-lane structure that will include additional vehicle lanes, sidewalks, and bicycle lanes to better accommodate current and future traffic demands in the San Diego region. The project also will widen the on- and off-ramps to help improve traffic flow, add a northbound auxiliary lane on I-5 between Genesee Avenue and Roselle Street, and construct a new, separated bicycle/pedestrian path.
