Science is for eating, building and launching! Each day students will participate in multiple hands-on experiments and projects that highlight a science and/or physics concept. Hydroponics, osmosis, balance, motion, acid/base reactions, freezing/boiling, momentum and more! Be ready to experiment, discover and have fun!

If you love writing exciting stories, this is the class for you. Come learn how to s-t-r-e-t-c-h your ideas so that readers not only read your stories, but feel like they are part of the world you created with words. In this class, you will publish one complete story and learn about a variety of literary devices to use when writing stories.

Send rockets flying high into the sky. Learn the basic principles of rocket design, then build and launch your own rockets for blast off. Calculate the height of flight and see whose went the highest. Discover Newton’s laws of motion, rocket design, and proper experimental methods. Become a rocket scientist.

CELEBRATING NATURE THROUGH SCIENCE, WRITING & ART

Attention elementary students! Would you like to explore the Spanish language, while playing games and doing fun activities? This class is guaranteed to be 85 minutes of good, Spanish fun.

Explore the environment and enjoy nature through observation, investigation, and writing. Hike through the woods, find flowers in the meadow, and explore a pond.

N. DISCOVERING ANCIENT EGYPT Instructor: Mary Sprecher, Baraboo School District Come spend a week exploring and discovering Ancient Egypt. We’ll study the ancient mysteries of the Egyptian pyramids including how they were built and where the mummies were buried inside. Would you like to learn all about mummies and the process of mummification? We will also make our own mummy. We’ll investigate Pharaohs, including the famous boy king – King Tut and learn about his history. Don’t forget, we’ll need to unravel the mystery of the hieroglyphics (translating it and learning to write our own secret messages). And if there is time, we’ll learn about the Great Sphinx – why and how it was built and how restoring it will help it to remain one of the Seven Wonders of the World.

Read about water critters fighting for survival against pollution in Wally Goes with the Flow. Make your own book, a nature journal, filled with sketches, creative writing, and poetry. Learn to interpret your discoveries in the natural world through art and science.

THE WORLD OF PERCY JACKSON

Instructor: Mark Ingles, Mauston School District The god’s of Olympus are alive this summer - and Percy Jackson knows all about it! This summer explore the first book in Rick Riordan’s series, “The Lightening Thief,” with book talks, art projects, and reader’s theater. Investigate Greek and Roman Mythology like you might at Camp Half-Blood. You will have a chance to connect with one of your favorite book characters as we come together to learn more about these ancient worlds.

MAKING MUSIC

Students will make panpipes and a frame drum from scratch, so come dressed to create (hammers and sanding and painting, oh yes!). We'll also learn about rhythm and technique with plenty of time for playing!

Have you ever wondered what math games kids play around the world? Who came up with all the math terms we use almost every day? What are my chances of getting Yahtzee in one roll of the dice? We will work with probability and statistics as we play games like Skunk. A different math topic every day! Explore these and many other hands-on math activities this summer in Adventures in Mathematics.

Investigate nature and create your own book, a nature journal, filled with your observations, sketches, and writing. Go on hikes through the fields and woods to discover the wonderful plants and creatures. Sketch a found object or critter from one of our nature walks. Express your observations and feelings about nature with creative writing and poetry. Investigate and discover the natural world.

Join me in an adventure of reading some exciting books and then working together to create your own story! You create the characters, setting, the problem and how your character(s) should solve it! This will be a time to review some famous books and use what we learn from them to write and illustrate our own creations! If this sounds like an adventure you'd like to take part in, then sign up and I will be ready to lead the way!

F. DIGGING UP DINOSAURS Instructor: Mary Sprecher, Baraboo School District

Are you interested in Dinosaurs? If you are, let’s explore the many different kinds of dinosaurs, what they ate, when they lived, and where they lived together with other dinosaur enthusiasts. We’ll create a diorama of life during the dinosaur days, along with creating models of dinosaurs to scare off your little sister or big brother. We’ll pretend that we are archeologists and dig up dinosaur bones. We’ll research and learn to draw different kinds of dinosaurs as well.

G. SUPER SCIENTISTS WANTED C. THE MUSIC OF POETRY - SET YOUR OWN WORDS TO MUSIC Instructor & author: Gary Frisch, Baraboo School District

Play with words, play with music, put your words to music. Explore the sound and rhythm of words and create poetry. Investigate musical rhythms and create shakers and drums. Then set your poetry to music! Musical instruments and percussion will be used along with your own voice to record your very own original masterpiece.
