Encourage the children to comment on the illustrations, ask questions, and predict what will happen next in the story. Children gain confidence and a sense of achievement through being able to correctly predict how a story will end. Introduce the concepts of comparison, perspective and persuasion to help the children relate to their meaning in a way that makes sense to them.

After:

Discuss the story. Ask questions… • List all of the animals that the bear asked if had seen his hat. • Was the bear polite when asking the other animals if they had seen his hat? • Which animal asked the bear what his hat looked like? • Which animal had the bear’s hat? • What did this animal say to make you think he was guilty? • Which animal was looking for a rabbit wearing a hat? • What do you think happened to the rabbit?

Do WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE The bear describes his hat as “red and pointy.” Invite your students to bring their favorite hat to class and discuss different adjectives that could be used to describe each hat. If the hat was lost, which two adjectives would best describe the hat?
