MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Congratulations to the 56 athletes selected to compete at the IAAF World Under 20 Championships to be held in Bydgoszcz, Poland, on 19-24 July, 2016. A breeding ground for future Australian champions, the green and gold have a great history of success at these championships, with athletes such as Jana Pittman, Sally Pearson, Catherine Freeman and Tim Forsyth among the recipients of the more than 50 medals won in both individual and relay events across the history of the event. Boasting national junior record holders Jack Hale (100m), Nina Kennedy (pole vault) and Alex Hulley (hammer throw), IAAF World Youth Championships medallists Darcy Roper (long jump) and Ned Weatherly (hammer throw) and Youth Olympic Games champion Jessica Thornton (400m), the squad includes 48 athletes competing in individual events, as well as the men’s and women’s 4x100m relay and women’s 4x400m relay teams. It’s a great honour to represent one’s country and we hope our athletes will cherish the opportunity presented to them and make these championships an important stepping stone to senior international competition. I warmly acknowledge the invaluable support of the Australian Government through the Australian Institute of Sport and the Australian Sports Commission. Their dedication to the improvement of athletics is unwavering and greatly appreciated. On behalf of Athletics Australia and the Australian athletics fraternity as a community, I wish the athletes, their coaches, family and friends the best of luck for Bydgoszcz 2016 and their future athletics goals.

Mark Arbib President Athletics Australia

The adrenaline rush does not compare to any other experience. What is the most challenging part of your event? Choosing to avoid social occasions that could be detrimental to performance, which requires extreme diligence of existence. What is your favourite meal? Burgers. What are your non-athletics hobbies? Gaming, watching television, AFL football, soccer. Which athlete inspires you the most? Pierre Bosse & Luke Mathews. If you were an animal, what would you be? Probably a cat, they’re pretty lazy. ATHLETE PROFILE What do you love about your event? I love the 800m because it is a very tactical race and you run majority of the race as a pack rather than in lanes. There is a great feeling of adrenaline that comes with the sound of the bell, indicating that you have one lap to go, it really pumps you up. What is the most challenging part of your event? Sometimes you have to make sacrifices, like the amount of times you can go out with your friends. What is your favourite meal? Burgers. What are your non-athletics hobbies? I love going out for breakfast with my friends and family, watching Dance Moms, listening to music and spending time with my dog. Which athlete inspires you the most? My brother, Jack Billings, inspires me because he has worked so hard to become an AFL footballer. If you were an animal, what would you be? A dolphin. ATHLETE PROFILE What do you love about your event? The 400m has a lot of guts about it, at the end of the day i think it comes down to who’s willing to hurt more. It’s incredibly challenging and I think that’s why I enjoy it so much. What is the most challenging part of your event? Unfortunately our bodies are not bullet proof, and I have learnt the hard way! The most challenging part about being an athlete for me is injury management. What is your favourite meal? Oh that’s a hard one - I just love food! What are your non-athletics hobbies? I live right near the beach so I spend a lot of time down there with friends, lots of coffees, breakfast and lunches. Which athlete inspires you the most? Cathy Freeman. ATHLETE PROFILE What do you love about your event? My event is the 400m, it is a great event because it feels like anything can happen and it is only when you are in the final straight that you know where you are seated, which is nerve racking whilst running but can also be really exciting. What is the most challenging part of your event? The worst part of being an athlete is when you feel that all the hard work you have put in doesn’t feel like it is paying off and its enduring it mentally and sometimes physically to the end where it starts to show. That inbetween bit is the hardest at times to stay determined. What is your favourite meal? Anything that involves dumplings. What are your non-athletics hobbies? My hobbies include playing soccer, lead drawing/ water colour painting and cooking. Which athlete inspires you the most? Cathy Freeman. If you were an animal, what would you be? I would be a horse, because they are such beautiful animals. Long Jump, the type of event everyone wishes they did because we all have a natural ability to jump over things or from bed to bed imagining the ground was lava just like when you’re a little kid. What is the most challenging part of your event? Getting through the hard sessions on cold mornings where your body is screaming but your mind is saying stop at nothing. What is your favourite meal? Steak. Medium rare. What are your non-athletics hobbies? Keeping my car on the road seems to be a full time job when I’m not at the track. Which athlete inspires you the most? Carl Lewis. If you were an animal, what would you be? A monkey. My aim at the IAAF World Under 20 Championships is… ...to jump further than I ever have and at the same time further than any Australian aged under 20.

ATHLETE PROFILE What do you love about your event? I love the 1500m and 3000m because they are both so different, both can be tactical, both can be fast, I don’t really have much experience in the 3000m yet, but from what I have had a taste of I love the fact that they always seen to be different. The 1500m, I love the fact that yes it is an endurance race but the majority of the time it always comes down to the last stretch. What is the most challenging part of your event? Training in winter is the most challenging part of being an athlete. Personally, I hate the cold and it is so tough training when its raining and windy. What is your favourite meal? Gnocchi, with bolognese. What are your non-athletics hobbies? I’ve always been a big fan of tennis and basketball, that was my love and passion before I started running. Which athlete inspires you the most? Linden Hall. If you were an animal, what would you be? A butterfly. My aim at the IAAF World Under 20 Championships is… ...to make the final in the 1500m, and to run a personal best whilst over in Europe.
