• Legacy solution is unstable when traffic surges and is unable to manage log files of considerable sizes • Eastar Jet adopted a hybrid IT infrastructure that required concurrent data backup and recovery of onpremises and cloud environments SOLUTION • Backup and recovery • Deduplication • Email archiving • Virtual server protection • Disaster recovery BENEFITS • Ease of data management • Modern data environment can grow with business demands • Business continuity is enhanced and more economical • Confidence in data protection and management to comply with and obtain standards certification

Eastar Jet is an independent, low-cost Korean airline established in 2007 with a business philosophy to popularize air travel by providing reasonable costs and the highest level of safety. The airline has 20 million in cumulative passenger numbers, operates four regular domestic routes and 19 international routes to Japan, China, Thailand and Hong Kong, and has a safety record of 187,000 hours.

10 Signs You’ve Outgrown Your Current Backup and Recovery Solution

The advent of low-cost airlines, also called third generation airlines, has significantly changed the landscape of the Korean aviation market. The aviation market was previously dominated by two established airlines with reasonable prices and in-flight services. By 2014, low-cost airlines made up more than 50 percent of Korean domestic routes.

With rapid data growth, increasing infrastructure complexity, and new strategic initiatives including virtualization, cloud, and compliance, legacy backup methods simply don’t meet the demands of today’s modern data center

One of the latest concerns in the market for low-cost airlines is the Information Security Management System (ISMS) Certification. This certification, jointly administered by the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning, Korea Association for ICT Promotion and Korea Internet and Security Agency, aims to improve enterprises’ data protection levels through the proper establishment of data protection measures. The Korean government is gradually making this certification compulsory for all industries. In preparation to comply with and obtain the ISMS certification, Eastar Jet proceeded to improve its IT infrastructure including strengthening the protection of their internal system and privacy policy. A core requirement of ISMS is to establish a data backup policy and system. The airline must back up a significant amount of log files such as groupware use records, customer information access records, firewall-related logs, and so on. At the same time, their existing data backup system was due for a refresh. The airline faced the challenge of transitioning from a legacy data management system to a modern information environment.

FLEXIBLE AND MODERN DATA MANAGEMENT FOR A HYBRID IT ENVIRONMENT Eastar Jet is known to be enterprising in their cloud adoption. Throughout the year, they run a number of campaigns to boost sales, such as early-bird bookings for the New Year’s holiday season. As these campaigns generate an enormous network traffic load for on-premises infrastructure, Eastar Jet needed a solution to scale capacity when faced with this sudden traffic surge. In 2014, the airline implemented a hybrid infrastructure combining on-premises and cloud capacity. Fully aware of the benefits of hybrid infrastructure, the airline expanded their infrastructure strategy to encompass data backup and recovery.

The airline faced difficulties with their existing legacy solution being unable to properly support their on-premises environment. They needed a stable solution capable of managing log files of considerable sizes. Their need to back up higher priority information first on a shorter cycle, and the ability to verify whether backup was executed normally and notify administrators when problems occur were crucial for the airline. After reviewing solutions and proof of concepts (PoC) from a number of vendors, the company decided on Commvault® software for its superior performance in a number of areas including compression ratio, compression speed and transfer rate, and ease of management. While other products had to operate two management points for cloud and on-premises environments, Commvault was able to integrate them into a single management point and manage concurrent backup and recovery of the hybrid environment..

SIMPLIFIED ADMINISTRATION OF DATA MANAGEMENT FOR A MODERN HYBRID ENVIRONMENT Implementation of the project started in March 2016, and all deployments and tests were completed by June. The airline managed approximately 130 servers, of which, 50 are servers in data centers and 80 are virtual servers. Since the implementation of hybrid data backup, approximately two thirds of all servers have been backed up. Commvault uniquely delivers end-to-end data management with a focus on simplicity and automation. “Commvault enables us to manage our data easily. It is easy to install modules and divide workloads by console. Our administrators now have peace of mind that backups are managed properly and alerts work perfectly, unlike previous products,” explained an Eastar Jet official. Eastar Jet is focused on meeting the requirements of the ISMS certification in the short-term. Their long-term goal is to further enhance their information environment. At the core of their strategy is the cloud. Although there are very few local use cases, the number of companies paying attention to cloud backup is gradually increasing. A mere comparison of cost may prove little difference from the traditional method, but the comparison of response time and compute power may be starkly obvious when taking into account purchasing physical equipment.

An Eastar Jet official advises companies preparing for data backup projects to put more focus on policies to comply to standards. “Establishing early on the purpose and targets of data backup, internal standard of data types and frequency, enables organization to apply them right away during implementation. In addition, defining relevant policy in consideration of company’s current IT infrastructure status and application methods, makes it even easier to build the backup and recovery system. Commvault software helps us to design and implement a compliant environment” he pointed out.

An advantage of cloud storage is flexibility depending on the available budget and workload. This is the biggest benefit the airline enjoys, together with system stability and steady latency. Commvault continues to improve on cloud features; one such example is the orchestration function to enable integrated management of several cloud services. This will gradually be important for the airline industry as companies adopt hybrid infrastructure.
