IDLO INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

PROGRAM FRAMEWORK The IDLO internship program is designed to provide a mutually beneficial relationship between IDLO and university students, young graduates, post-graduate students, or persons similarly situated (collectively referred to as Interns). The program offers Interns an exceptional learning experience in an international organization and increases their awareness and knowledge of legal issues in the development arena. Internships also benefit IDLO by allowing participants to contribute their skills and competencies to the realization of IDLO’s strategic goals and mission. Interns are fully involved in the work program of the Unit or Department that has selected them to carry out assignments relevant to their studies and experiences under the supervision of IDLO staff.

INTERNSHIP PROGRAM DETAILS Minimum Requirements

Applicants enrolled in an undergraduate or post-graduate course of study at a university or equivalent higher education institution in a field relevant to IDLO’s work, or have completed their university studies at the undergraduate or post-graduate level.

There is no strict age requirement but applicants generally fall between the ages of 21 and 30 years.

Possess an excellent working knowledge of English. Knowledge of other languages is considered an asset.

Duration The normal duration of an internship is for three to a maximum of six months. Interns generally are hosted for an initial three months and their tenure can be extended for an additional three months if the host department or unit sees that there is mutual value for both the Intern and IDLO. The level of effort can be variable but in order for an internship to be mutually beneficially to both IDLO and the Intern, all internships must be for a minimum twenty (20) hours per week. Stipend and Insurance

The Intern will receive a net stipend of €600 per month for full-time and €300 per month for part-time work, unless any payment or sponsorship provided from a sponsoring institution. The payment will be pro-rated for periods of less than one month on the basis of 22 days per month;

All selected interns must hold and show proof of suitable medical insurance (sufficient to cover costs of hospitalization for at least the duration of the internship plus one month) to the Department of Human Resources (HR) before starting the internship.

GENERAL CONDITIONS Expenses: Costs and arrangements for travel, visa, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of the Interns or their nominating or sponsoring institutions (if applicable). Under no circumstances will IDLO be held liable for such expenses. The Intern shall have sufficient financial means for living expenses and for repatriation, and be prepared to provide proof of the same at the request of HR. Interns shall not engage in gainful employment in Italy during their internship with IDLO. Visa: Interns are solely responsible for obtaining the necessary entry visa and arranging their travel to IDLO offices. IDLO only can assist in the issuance of student visas to Interns not holding citizenship of a country that is a member of the European Union or a country that enjoys similar treatment with regard to immigration requirements and procedures. In order to be eligible to apply for a student visa, the Intern must be attending university and have the support of their university. Employment: This program is not connected with employment at IDLO and there is no expectation of such. Interns wishing to apply for regular employment or consultancies with IDLO must apply through the regular recruitment process online, if applicable. At no time shall an Intern represent himself or herself as being a salaried employee of IDLO to parties outside of IDLO. Termination: The Intern or IDLO may terminate the internship at any given time, but in such a case both parties are expected to give each other an adequate amount of time to allow for the orderly transfer of responsibilities. Family Members: Sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, husbands, or wives of IDLO staff, contractors, or persons who sit on the IDLO governing bodies will not be considered eligible for internships. Confidentiality: The Intern shall treat all non-public information they have access to at IDLO as being confidential. Agreement: IDLO will provide to the Intern a copy of the Internship Agreement prior to the commencement of the internship. The agreement is regulated by the IDLO Code of Conduct and all relevant IDLO rules and policies, which the Intern must abide by at all times. For the duration of their internship, Interns shall be expected to conduct themselves in a manner that is equivalent to that of an international civil servant.

IDLO’S RESPONSIBILITY TO THE INTERN

The hosting department or unit should observe the Intern and his/her work effort and offer constructive feedback throughout the internship to ensure that the Intern is learning from challenging and rewarding assignments; and

The hosting department or unit will provide a letter of reference upon expiration of the internship.
