Question The maps below show Bronson’s town centre in 1950, 1980 and 2010. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Sample answer The three maps illustrate the changes that were made to the centre of a town called Bronson over a 60 year period from 1950 to 2010. Overall, there were five significant developments that changed location and function of the town’s amenities. Turning to the details, the playground, which was located in the top left corner of the map in 1950, remained unchanged in the 1980, whereas by 2010 it had been transformed into a park of roughly half its original size. The second change relates to the school which was in the top right corner of the 1950 map. It was the same in 1980, however in 2010 it was extended to accommodate a playground. The third development concerns the roundabout in the south-west corner of the map in 1950 which, in 1980, was demolished and replaced by a carpark. In the same period, the post office, which was situated in the south-east corner of the 1950 map, was expanded and a supermarket was added in 1980. Finally, in 2010 the aforementioned carpark and post office/supermarket were replaced by a large shopping centre which also provided a carpark for patrons. (190 words)
