JOB ADVERTISMENT Early Stage Researcher (ESR) in Bioinformatics / Machine Learning / Statistical Genetics (PhD position) Applications are invited for an Early Stage Researcher fellowship (PhD position) at the Max Planck Institute of Psychiatry in Munich, Germany. This position is part of the Marie Curie Initial Training Network "Machine Learning for Personalized Medicine" (http://mlpm.eu). The candidate should not have spent more than 12 months in Germany in the last 3 years (see also eligibility criteria below). The recruited ESR will conduct PhD studies at the Max Planck Institute of Psychiatry in Munich, Germany, visit another partner node for a 3-month internship, and attend the training events of the network, in particular the annual summer schools on Machine Learning for Personalized Medicine. The position is fully funded until the end of 2016 (100% employment) according to the Marie Curie Programme (7th Framework Programme of the European Commission), which offers highly competitive and attractive salary and working conditions. Beyond 2016 to complete a full PhD cycle of three years a German PhD salary grade 13/2 Collective Agreement for the Civil Service (TVöD) will be provided. The Marie Curie Initial Training Network is a consortium of 14 universities and companies with expertise in Statistical Genetics or Machine Learning located throughout Europe and in the USA. The Network trains 13 Early Stage Researchers and one Experienced Researcher (Postdoc). Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Bertram Müller-Myhsok Research project: The project is entitled: “Predicting Phenotype through Interaction of Genotype, Epigenotype and Environment with Probabilistic Models” The following objectives will be addressed within the project: • Design probabilistic models for relating genotype and phenotypic measures such as gene expression and disease phenotypes. • Account for (unobserved and observed) environmental confounders and predictors in models that relate phenotype to genotype. • Incorporate epigenomic effects in models that relate genotype to phenotype and determine to what extent environment acts in addition to and possibly in interaction with epigenomic effects. The methodology will include: • Probabilistic models for formulating relationship between observations. • Latent variables for dealing with confounders. • Interaction models to directly model joint effects predicting class membership or phenotype. • State of the art approaches to causal inference.

Eligibility: Applicants must satisfy the eligibility requirements for an Early Stage Researcher under the European Commission Framework 7 Early Stage Training Scheme listed below: • They must not have been awarded the doctorate degree. • Candidates are expected to have less than 4 years of full-time equivalent research experience at the selection time. This is measured from the date when they obtained the degree which formally entitles them to embark on a doctorate, either in the country in which the degree was obtained, or in the country in which the research training is provided, irrespective of whether or not a doctorate was envisaged. • Researchers can be of any nationality. They are required to undertake trans-national mobility (i.e. move from one country to another) when taking up their appointment. • At the time of selection by the host organisation, researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of their host organisation (Germany) for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to their recruitment. Short stays, such as holidays, are not taken into account. Application process: Applicants should use the link given below to submit their applications. Please prepare the following documents: 1. Letter of application 2. Curriculum vitae, including a list of publications and university transcripts 3. 2-page statement of research interests 4. Names of 2 referees 5. Written statement by the applicant that the mobility criterion is fulfilled. Please clarify in this statement in which countries you lived, worked and studied during the last 3 years. The reviewing process will start on July 15, 2015; the position will remain open until filled. For more information please contact Prof. Dr. Bertram Müller-Myhsok ([email protected] ). Women are especially encouraged to apply and handicapped applicants with equal qualifications will be given preferential treatment.
