Moving On Up Part II

Despite playing just 100 games as a Sycamore, senior Morgan Allee is nearing a benchmark as she is now 10th in career stolen bases in MVC history. Allee currently sits in second place in ISU history with 66 stolen bases and just needs two more steals to tie the ISU career record, despite playing just two seasons, after setting the ISU single season record of 36 last season. Allee also fell just one short of setting the MVC single season record last season.

Senior Morgan Allee is also closing in on other Sycamore records as she is currently second in career on base percentage at .463, behind only Krista McFarren who held a .471 average from 1981-83, second in slugging percentage at .520, and second in batting average at .362, behind only Lea Twigg who was .375 from 1995-95. Her mark of .505 on base percentage is also currently the highest in ISU single season history. The senior also is 9th in runs scored with 70 and Allee also ranks third all-time in career hit by pitch with 20 and holds the single season hit by pitch record with 12 and runs scored with 36.

Senior Shelby Wilson is also second in career RBI’s with 87, just 2 away from Katie Armour’s mark of 89 for the top spot. Wilson also ranks in the top 15 of 17 different Indiana State career record categories, including: batting average, slugging percentage, on base percentage, games started, at bats, runs scored, hits, doubles, home runs, RBI’s, total bases, walks, hit by pitch, sacrifice flies, sacrifice hits and stolen bases.

Moving On Up: Team Edition With 3 games left to play, the Indiana State softball team is having an assault on the ISU record book as they are on pace to break 8 different team records, including: batting average, slugging percentage, on base percentage, runs scored, RBI’s, total bases, hit by pitch, and fielding percentage. Last season, the Sycamores set the ISU record for on base percentage, stolen bases and hit by pitch. The team’s 25-25 overall record also marks the first time since the 1992 season that the team has been at or above .500, 50 games into a season.

Swinging Away Now nearing the end of the 2014 season, the Indiana State softball team has been extremely consistent at the plate as a team. Through 50 games, the team holds a .294 team batting average which ranks second in the MVC, only trailing Wichita State. The Sycamores also have four different players batting over .300 on the season, led by senior Morgan Allee who is at .390. with a .505 on base percentage with 30 stolen bases.

Not Afraid To Sacrifice Freshman Rylee Holland as made an immediate impact for the Sycamores and been superb at advancing runners. In 45 games played, Holland has 14 sacrifice bunts and two sacrifice flies to lead the Missouri Valley Conference and ranks 12th in NCAA Division 1. Holland also leads the MVC in runners advanced with 25. Aubre Carpenter is also 3rd in the MVC in runners advanced with 22. As a team, the Sycamores have 74 sacrifice bunts to lead the MVC.

Historical Wins With six games to play, the Sycamores have the chance to be on of the best teams in school history with 24 wins already on the board. 31 wins in 1986 28 win in 1986 26 wins in 1992 25 wins in 2014 25 wins in 2006

Seeing The Ball On March 29 in the series opener at Illinois State, freshman catcher Brooke Riemenschneider had one of the best offensive days a player could ask for as she went 3-3 and reached base in all five of her plate appearance. Riemenschneider hit two home runs and a double off the top of the wall to drive in three runs with five runs scored individually. Now on the season, Remy is second on the team in RBI’s with 21.

Advancing Those Runners Not only has the team been efficient at getting on base, they have also been able to advance runners already on base. The Sycamores lead the MVC in sacrifice bunts with 74 and lead the Valley in runners advanced with 182, 44 more than Wichita State who ranks second in the leage. Just as they did last season, the Sycamores also lead the MVC in stolen bases with 90 in 50 games, ranking them 17th nationally.

Scoring First Through their first 50 games of the season, the Indiana State softball team has been quick to get on the scoreboard. The Sycamores have scored first in 26 of their 50 games played. When scoring first, the Sycamores are 21-5 on the season. The Sycamores have also scored in the first inning 18 times and hold a 16-2 record when doing so. The Sycamores have also been outstanding at holding teams to two or fewer runs as they have done so 20 times and hold a 15-5 record when doing so. The team is also 24-3 when leading their opponents after four innings.

Fielding It Clean After finishing near the top of the league in fielding percentage last season, the Sycamores are once again doing a superb job of not beating themselves and are currently second in the MVC and 19th nationally in fielding percentage at .972. The Sycamores 41 errors is also the second fewest in the MVC to date. In addition, the Sycamores have also turned 18 double plays which ranks third in the MVC.

Playing Small Ball Despite having the second fewest extra base hits in the MVC through their 50 games played with 85, the Sycamores are averaging nearly eight hits a game and are second in the Missouri Valley Conference in batting average at .294 . While they have been superb at putting the ball in play, the Sycamores have also found other ways on base as they are third in the MVC in On Base Percentage at .381. The Sycamores also rank second in the MVC in hits, third in walks and fourth in hit by pitch with 378, 149, and 36, respectively. Seven Sycamore players have also received double digit walks in, Allee, Crissman, Cavin, Alvarez, Riemenschneider, Wilson and Stone.

Good Speed Aboard Just as it was last season, speed is the name of the game for the Sycamores as they have 90 stolen bases in 50 games to rank first in the MVC and 17th nationally. Senior Morgan Allee leads the team with 30 stolen bases after finishing 2013 ninth in the NCAA with 36 stolen bases. On Feb. 22 against Dayton, Allee stole four bases for a team and career high. As a team the Sycamores stole nine bases against Quinnipiac on March 7. Now 35 games into the season, 14 different Sycamore players have stolen a base with freshmen Kassie Brown, Leah Salmon, Madison Booe, Erika Crissman, Rylee Holland and Brooke Riemenschneider along with sophomores Kelsey Montgomery, Abbie Malchow and Alexa Cavin and juniors Aubre Carpenter, Ashley Dickerson and Megan Stone, and senior Shelby Wilson.

Head coach Shane Bouman -- 3rd Season (South Dakota ‘92)

Head Coach Shane Bouman enters his third season as head softball coach at Indiana State. In his first season at the helm of the Sycamore program, Bouman increased the Sycamores win total from the season before and led the team to the third longest win streak in the history of the program. Bouman also coached Lindsey Beisser to second team All-MVC honors. Bouman comes to Indiana State from Iowa Lakes Community College where he spent one successful season. His team finished with a 27-12 overall record and advanced to the Region XI Tournament, winning its first contest. Prior to his stint at Iowa Lakes Community College, Bouman served as the pitching coach at the University of Iowa for three seasons where the Hawkeyes went 109-59 and twice qualified for the NCAA Tournament. Bouman’s success at Iowa came early. In 2008, his first season as pitching coach, the Hawkeye pitchers garnered top-25 national rankings in four categories: seventh nationally in team earned run average (1.23) and Brittany Weil finished the season ranked 22nd in individual wins (28) and 23rd in earned run average (1.22). Weil was also a four-time Big Ten Pitcher of the Week honoree, first-team NFCA all-Mideast Region selection, and second team all-Big Ten pick. Current Indiana State assistant coach Amanda Zust finished the season ranked 14th in hits allowed per seven innings (3.87) and 24th in earned run average (1.24). In his second season at Iowa, Bouman once again guided the pitching staff to national recognition. Iowa’s pitchers finished the 2009 season with a 1.38 ERA, which ranked seventh-nationally. In addition, Weil either broke or tied six school records during her senior campaign, and also tossed five no-hitters, including a perfect game. Bouman guided Weil to Iowa’s first ever NFCA National Player of the Week honor, and she was also named Big Ten Pitcher of the Week four times and went on to earn NFCA second team all-America honors, first team NFCA all-Midwest Region and first team all-Big Ten honors. Bouman previously served as head coach at South Dakota State University for six seasons and is the winningest coach in SDSU school history. Bouman guided nine players to Division I All-Independent teams, seven players to Division I All-Academic teams, and garnered an ESPN Academic All-American honoree. During Bouman’s tenure, the Jackrabbits set school records for career home runs, stolen bases, RBI, and sacrifices.

Assistant coach Amanda Zust -- 3rd Season (Iowa ‘06) Amanda Zust enters her third season as an assistant coah of the Indiana State softball team working third with the pitchers. In her first season with the Sycamores Zust coached Lindsey Beisser to second team All-MVC honors. Before joining Coach Boaman’s staff at Indiana State, Zust spent a season as a volunteer assistant coach at Drake University where she helped lead the Bulldogs to a 34-21 record and a second place finish in the MVC. Zust, who graduated in 2010, was a standout pitcher at the University of Iowa where she compiled a 56-27 overall record with 597 strikeouts. The Des Moines native ranks in the school’s top-10 in several categories, including career games, innings pitched, complete games, wins and strikeouts. In addition, Zust earned Iowa’s Most Improved Player Award in 2007 and 2008, took home its Gold Glove Award in 2009 and threw two no-hitters - one in 2009 and another 364 days later in 2010. Zust also coached for five years at Des Moines East High School in Des Moines, Iowa.

Assistant coach Lucas Hileman -- 1st Season

Former Sycamore dual-sport student-athlete Lucas Hileman has joined the Indiana State University Softball staff for the 2013-14 academic year. “I’m excited to continue building a winning tradition at ISU. I feel my experience as an student-athlete will help take the Sycamore Softball program to the next level,” Hileman said. Hileman spent two seasons in the Sycamore outfield, helping the baseball team to a Missouri Valley Conference Championship and NCAA Regional Appearance in 2012, starting 79 games overall with 32 RBI’s, 12 stolen bases, 15 assists and zero errors. As a punter for the Sycamore football team, Hileman was named to the AllMVFC First Team and had an average of 44.1 yards per punt, ranking seventh nationally while setting a new single-season ISU school record during his senior campaign. Hileman spent one season at Baylor University and one season at John A. Logan College prior to transferring to ISU. He spent 2010 with Team USA baseball. At Baylor, he started 13 games and played in 25 with a .395 batting average. Hileman was a standout athlete at Anna-Jonesboro (IL) High School earning all-state honors in both football and basketball.
