George Beverly Shea passes at 104 Beloved Gospel Singer teamed with Billy Graham for more than 60 years Charlotte, NC – Canadian-born in Winchester, Ontario, George Beverly Shea, 104, of Montreat, North Carolina, soloist of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association (BGEA), died on April 16 following a brief illness. Since George Beverly Shea first sang for Graham in 1943 on the Chicago radio hymn program, Songs in the Night, Shea has faithfully carried the Gospel in song to every continent. Graham’s senior by ten years, Shea devotedly preceded the evangelist in song in nearly every Crusade over the span of more than one-half century. Shea was the recipient of 10 Grammy nominations, a Grammy Award in 1965, and was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Grammy organization in 2011. He was also a member of the Gospel Music Association Hall of Fame (1978), and was inducted into the Religious Broadcasting Hall of Fame in February 1996. Shea was also inducted into the inaugural class of the Conference of Southern Baptist Evangelists’ “Hall of Faith” in 2008.

George Beverly Shea, 1909 – 2013.

“I first met Bev Shea while in Chicago when he was on Moody Radio,” said Billy Graham. “As a young man starting my ministry, I asked Bev if he would join me. He said yes and for over 60 years we had the privilege of ministering together across the country and around the world. Bev was one of the most humble, gracious men I have ever known and one of my closest friends. I loved him as a brother. My prayer for his wife, Karlene, and his children, Ron and Elaine, is that God will strengthen them during this time.” Visit BillyGraham.ca for additional information.

News Briefs Pastor Saeed Abedini severely beaten

(Christian Post) – The American Center for Law and Justice received news that U.S. pastor Saeed Abedini has been severely beaten in Evin Prison in Tehran, denied proper medical care, and experiencing fainting spells. During a weekly prison visit, Pastor Saeed’s family reported that his physical condition is worsening – seeing first-hand the marks and symptoms left by the recent beating. “These beatings and the internal injuries are causing Pastor Saeed frequent fainting spells,” the law group, which is representing Abedini’s wife and two children back in America, revealed in a statement. The Iranian-born pastor, who converted to Christianity and was building an orphanage for children when he was arrested in Tehran last year, was sentenced to eight years in prison in January for “endangering national security.” The ACLJ called that a “sham trail,” however, noting that the real reason behind Abedini’s sentence was his faith.

Exposing Gosnell’s evil practices

Philadelphia, PA (BCN) – As the 5th week of testimony began in the murder trial of “Dr.” Kermit Gosnell, the sickening details of how he allegedly killed babies born alive by cutting their tiny spinal cords with scissors, seemed horrible enough. However, the testimony of Medical Examiner Sam Gulino – as he described having to examine the remains of 47 fetuses, frozen and kept in cat food containers and milk jugs at Gosnell’s “house of horrors,” not to mention (but we will) the five jars of babies’ feet preserved in formaldehyde – was shocking and seemingly unreal; straight out of a twisted novel. Here at BCN, we normally don’t include such graphic descriptions and links to such, however, in the case of Kermit Gosnell’s murder trial, we feel the truth – as disturbing as it is – should definitely be made known…for the babies’ sake. Gosnell is charged with eight counts of murder for the deaths of seven babies and a 41-year-old woman, Karnamaya Mongar, who died from an “anesthetic overdose.”

died on Friday following several years of declining health. He was 78. A prolific writer who once released nine books over a two-year stretch, Manning was known as a fierce advocate for the marginalized, poor and church-abused. His Ragamuffin Gospel, released in 1990, was billed as “good news for the bedraggled, beat-up and burnt-out,” and heralded Jesus’ gospel of grace over a works-based salvation. The book became an oft-quoted classic for many well-known authors, artists and musicians, including Michael W. Smith, Michael Card and the late Rich Mullins, whose Ragamuffin Band was named after Manning’s book. “The greatest single cause of atheism in the world today is Christians who acknowledge Jesus with their lips and walk out the door and deny Him by their lifestyle,” Manning wrote. “That is what an unbelieving world simply finds unbelievable.”

Christian in court for not printing gay magazine (The Christian Institute) – The Christian owner of a printing firm in Northern Ireland faces being hauled to court over his refusal to print a gay magazine. Nick Williamson, who is being advised by The Christian Institute, says printing the material would go against his religious beliefs. But the editor of MyGayZine, Danny Toner, has approached a solicitor and referred the matter to the Equality Commission for Northern Ireland. Williamson

was asked to provide a cost estimate for printing the magazine, timed to coincide with a gay rights march in Belfast. But in an email to Toner, Williamson said he did “not feel comfortable” taking the job on because it “would be in contradiction to my own

faith.” Williamson had initially explained: “Unfortunately due to the nature of the magazine we are unable to give a quote.” Bu t To n e r s a i d h e wa s “shocked” and “annoyed” at Williamson’s comments, and said: “If we can take the printer to court, we will.”

CITY LIGHT NEWS, MAY 2013 — 3

That reminds me of a story... by Peter McManus Israel. The land that offers a glimpse into our Christian past. Actually, I would say more than a glimpse. Having recently returned from a second journey to the Holy Land, one marvels at just how much history is embedded in the rocks and ancient pathways. Our group numbered 25 people and, other than one lady suffering a broken foot when she stepped off the pathway, we had no other mishaps. Well, there was the one incident where someone got lost in the Holocaust Museum. But we found her! On my first trip someone quipped that we were, “running where Jesus walked” and I did not want to repeat that on my second journey. So we had a more relaxed time moving from site to site, although not everyone on the tour may think so! Watching the faces of our group who had never been to Israel before, I saw the awe of them seeing something that was over 2,000 years old. Combining that with the Biblical story that came with these surroundings, Scripture came alive as site after site revealed actual artifacts. Of course, everyone had different highlights of the trip, but most concurred that our time spent at The Dead Sea, where we floated (I bobbed) on the salt water was a very refreshing time. We were all laughing and chattering. Some spread mud from the sea-bed over their bodies to take on the rejuvenating properties. One couple who came were celebrating their 40th anniversary. They claimed the trip was life altering and are excited about God’s unfolding plans for them. Whether it was walking along the head-waters of the Jordan River in Caesarea Philippi where the disciple Peter proclaimed that Jesus is the Messiah or having a boat ride on the Sea of Galilee where we ended up singing with our Christian captain, or walking through Nazareth Village seeing how people would have lived during Jesus time, all of us were taken back in time to experience a truly inspiring time. Then we headed to Jerusalem. Seeing the massive walls surrounding the ancient city tower above you gives an overwhelming sense of wonder and amazement. One of my main highlights was going to Masada. Overlooking the Dead Sea, it was once the summer palace of Herod the Great. The story unfolds in a powerful way as we saw first-hand how a small group of Jews held off an entire Roman army. One thing I found of particular interest was how they used a trough system to collect rain water into vast cisterns. They had no water shortage. Another amazing thing to me was how close all the places you read about in the Bible are to each other. For example, Bethlehem, Jericho, Herodium, Masada and the Dead Sea are all within a short drive from Jerusalem. Now, when I read in Scripture where Jesus travelled from place to place, I can picture Him walking along perhaps the same route I took. For many of us the biggest highlight of Israel was communion at the Garden Tomb. I shared about my memorable first Easter as a Christian. Each one shared what Israel meant to them, how God had brought healing, provided funds, orchestrated circumstances and timing, and made scripture come alive. And just as Jesus spoke to us to, “Do this in remembrance of me,” we had communion.

Through a Glass, Darkly by Tim W. Callaway

“…Do something outrageous today – give way more than reasonable to a homeless person, take the family out for an ice cream dinner… and serve only ice cream. Call someone you hurt and ask forgiveness, call someone who hurt you and give forgiveness.” – (David, in one of his last notes) My friends are avoiding me. They’re not responding to my emails or voice messages offering lunch or a trip to the Balzac mall. They’re sidestepping me like…well, yes, like death. I’m trying not to attribute it to the sad reality that I’ve lost three dear friends already in 2013 by what we often refer to as “untimely” deaths – although for anyone with a wisp of Calvinism in their theology (most of us, totally depraved as we are) – use of such a term might be cause for pause. I wrote here of the horrific vehicle accident in early January that claimed the life of a congregant and unique friend, Cory, stolen (with apologies to John Calvin) from his wife and five children at age 39. In early February, a six-and-ahalf foot Lakota (Sioux) Native American whom I fondly called “the chief ” sustained a fatal heart-attack at 58 years, leaving his wife and four sons, aka “the tribe.” Rich’s contribution to my efforts to embrace an understanding of the Christian gospel liberated from its cultural accoutrements was weighty. ‘Twas he who invited me to participate in my first-ever worship “pow-wow.” Mom would have been so proud! Then, just a few days after Easter, David (quoted above) succumbed at 44 to a ten-year tempestuous clash with brain cancer. In response to those of us who tried to empathize with what we perceived to be the particularly unreasonable lot he’d been rationed (better, John Calvin?), he and his wife would offer stuff like: “We’ve been crushed and tears have flowed and we do not understand and still we say, holy, holy, holy is The Lord God Almighty

We want to hear from you. Please send us your thoughts and opinions. Email us at: [email protected] or fax us at 1-866-845-2019. Dear Editor, In this degraded world where Biblical faith is attacked from many quarters, and rarely rebutted, apparently for fear of political incorrectness sanctions, if such continues there will be nothing to defend. In the April issue, Tim W. Callaway mentions (his opinion) “the Bible is not intended as a definitive textbook on most components of physical health, neither is it to be understood as an exhaustive treatise on mental health.” He is fully entitled to said opinion, but (I opine) he tentatively supports the too common belittling faith in the Good Book. The late Norman Vincent Peale’s 1993 book Bible Power for Successful Living chapter 11 entitled ‘God’s Way to Good Health and Long Life’ covers the subject encouragingly.

who was and is and is to come.” We bickered about whether or not he’d adopted such views as the result of his promising, if abbreviated, career in American politics. As you might appreciate, I’ve done a lot of praying this calendar year. Well, let’s be honest, it’s been more like “venting” or “dumping” – something, anyway, that’s been occasionally and mercifully alleviated by recalling why it was I was initially drawn to meaningful relationships with these three. Peculiar senses of humour, dogged insistence on refusing to accept the numerous platitudes that abound in North American political and religious circles, as well as resolute, Christ-like tenacity to believing that things can be better than they are but that such won’t come about via the roadway of unfettered capitalism. Thus, you might say that the “premature” passing (“oops” again, John Calvin!) of each of these gentlemen has provoked some strong emotions for me resulting in an eagerness to articulate to God my not-so-petty disgruntlement with “His ways,” even though, reportedly, they “are not our ways” and “are past finding out,” et al. Guess what! I have been graciously reminded that a penchant to be annoyed with what the Almighty permits (put down the gun, John, ‘cuz I’ve got a good premise here!) is not something unique to early 21st-century types who seem to excel at calling God or even the notion of “god” to account (enter Hitchens, Dawkins, Harris, etc). Check out Psalm 77 as but one example to support my judgment in this regard! Yes, like the psalmist, I’m troubled! But apparently, that’s permissible with God! How sweet is that? This is really what I’d like to tell someone – if they’d return my calls.

Tomorrow is always a new day Brandi is a mother of a child who was sexually abused. She shares help and hope for other parents. by Brandi First, develop a support system, whatever that looks like for you. It is imperative. Ensure it is in place for you and your child. You will need it. Repeatedly. Please try to remember you are not alone, no matter what it feels like. There are other parents who struggle with this issue too. Try to make connections with other families who understand. I struggled alone for a year and a half, never connecting with others, not even realizing that there may be someone else walking the same path. The day I met another supportive mother, our outlooks changed and healing began. Unable to find support groups in our areas, we started our own online Facebook parent group. No one else truly understands the anguish, the alarming thoughts, the guilt and the grief that we experience. No one else can say, “Yes I’ve been there, you are not insane and it will get better.” Get involved in a group or organization. Secondly, if you haven’t already reached out for professional help, do so. Don’t just seek counseling for your child. You too have been traumatized and need to find your own healing – a counselor, clergy, psychologist, or sexual abuse expert, one can help you work through the

emotions YOU feel. Because the immense grief is real, the guilt is crippling, and you are overnight harbouring thoughts you’d never even imagined the day before, it is imperative you have someone to talk to about your anger, grief and irrational thoughts. They are normal but harmful if they continue indefinitely. No parent can help their broken child through the healing process without keeping their own emotions under control. You must also find some forgiveness for yourself realizing it is not your fault. In turn, you will be a better parent to your child. Talk openly with your child. Talk about both of your fears and grief. Let them see that this deeply affects you too. Show them how you heal your own broken pieces. It’s great role modeling and practice too, practice you will both need in the coming years. Lastly look after yourself. Do one thing every day that feeds your own soul. A hobby, a friend, a laugh, a bath, music, meditation, prayer, whatever. It’s so easy to lose yourself in this process. Keeping your glass full, even overflowing, means that you have lots to offer your child, the energy they require you to give them until they are stronger. Please know that tomorrow is always a new day, no matter how bad today, there will be a future for both of you. Keep the hope. It gets better. Connect on facebook.com/groups/SGPOSAC/?fref=ts

Behind the Veil A monthly look behind the scenes of Islam. This column is intended to answer your questions regarding anything you’d like to know about Islam or Muslims. You can ask any question (that’s reprintable) and Wagdi Iskander will answer it. You can send your questions to [email protected] Q. “We have Muslim neighbours and they believe in Jinn. Do all Muslims believe in these Jinn?” A. The Jinn in Islam are a given, but many Muslims do not understand them. Maybe a similar example in Christianity is the practice of fasting. It is a given and understood, but not everyone practices fasting. In Islam, Jinn are a given, but not all Muslims are aware of them. Jinn are creatures that you cannot see or hear. Some people try to imagine what they look like, but they are spirit beings. Jinn are not humans or angels, but they have been created by God. Man was created out of clay. Jinn were created out of fire (Surah 15, Al-Hijr , 26-27). Men and Jinn were both created to worship God. Jinn and humans are alike because they are created male and female. God ordered both the angels and the Jinn to bow before Adam and they refused. “We have asked the angels to bow before Adam and they did, except the devil, and he was part of the Jinn, and he rebelled against God’s order.” (Surah 18, Al-Khahf, 50) There is a whole Surah (Surah 72, Al-Jinn) in the Quran that is designated for the Jinn. There are different types and ranks of Jinn. Some of the Jinn are righteous and believe in Mohammad and Allah, and some of them are wicked. Mohammed declared that every human has a Jinn. Even Mohammed had a Jinn, whom he converted to Islam. Jinn have greater power than humans. Part of this power is that they can appear in human and animal form. One of them appeared like an old man and told some people to kill Mohammed. Some of them can appear in the form of a handsome man or a beautiful lady and marry a human being. Some Islamic scholars have said that some humans have been married to Jinn without knowing it. In one of the Hadiths, Mohammed said that a man entered his home and he called the name of Allah and started to eat. Satan fled but the Jinn stayed and ate with him and stayed overnight. If a Jinn stays overnight he has several rights. He can appear in the form of a man or a woman and sleep with the husband or wife. He is also permitted

www.calgarychristian.com

to molest the man’s children. All this is with the permission of the man and Allah, since the man has allowed the Jinn to stay in his house. The Jinn’s relationship with humans is that Allah uses them to spread the Shariah (Islamic law). On many occasions of Mohammed’s proselytizing, the Jinn play a big role. Jinn also play a big role in making non-Halal food to become Halal. Also, a Jinn will help the Muslim when they steal from non-Muslims, or when they conquer other places or land. So, Jinn play a big role in the life of human beings and especially Muslims. Many Muslim scholars even now are divided: are Jinn good spirits or evil spirits? In some cases, if you feel the presence of a Jinn you have to rebuke it in the name of Allah. On the other hand, Jinn were welcomed by Mohammed and they possessed him. They are ordered to worship God, but at the same time, we see that they are full of evil. Many times we wonder at some of the things that Muslims do and we ask ourselves, “can a human do that?” They can do that because they are possessed and they allow this evil spirit to be part of their life. From a Christian perspective, Jinn and Satan cannot be distinguished. When Muslims become believers, they carry much spiritual baggage with them. This includes formal declarations of submission to Islam, and also to the Jinn. We lead new believers through prayers of denunciation of the values of Islam, including: denunciation of all types and forms of fear, the demands of Islam, submission to “Allah of the Quran,” the community and principles of Islam, shame, guilt, deception, intimidation, control, violence, hatred and unforgiveness even Jinn. When associating and witnessing to Muslims, we need to pray for protection and empowerment by the Holy Spirit. One of the most difficult areas in witnessing is to experience this very issue (as Ephesians talks about) – spiritual warfare. About Wagdi Iskander Born into a Bedouin Arab family, Wagdi was raised as a Muslim in the Sudan. In 1982 his life changed dramatically after accepting Jesus Christ as Lord. First he was persecuted and then arrested along with two Christian friends for refusing to renounce Jesus as Lord. All three were sentenced to die. His friends were executed but when they came for Wagdi he made a miraculous last minute escape and went into hiding until 1985 when he flew to England. In 1988 he came to Canada and has pastored Arabic churches in Calgary and Edmonton.

Political expediency or moral neglect by Brian Rushfeldt, Executive Director Canada Family Action Coalition A broad view of politics in Canada might indicate that many government decisions are made based in one of two positions. In some cases political expediency (defined as attempt to stay in office), in other cases moral neglect. Two recent federal decisions raise such positions. Bill C279, a bill that uses the undefined term “gender identity” passed parliament when 18 Conservative MPs (nine of them Conservative cabinet members) supported the ND, Liberal and BLOC parties. The private member Bill from an NDP activist MP surprisingly made its way through Parliament unlike 98 percent of other private member bills. This is more surprising considering two facts: one is that the Conservative government holds the majority of votes in the House, and two, that the Bill caused massive public outcry over issues of safety of women and girls regarding female only facilities. Other social and legal concerns were voiced. What does “gender identity” mean? The Bill states gender identity is the deep inner feelings one has toward sex and gender identification. Hmm, that explains it doesn’t it. Not apt wording for criminal or human rights law. To help us understand here is more clarity from the Human Rights Commission in Australia. “The phrase sex and/or gender identity is used in this paper as a broad term to refer to diverse sex and/or gender identities and expressions. It includes being transgender, trans, transsexual and intersex. It also includes being androgynous, agender, a cross dresser, a drag king, a drag queen, genderfluid, genderqueer, intergender, neutrois, pansexual, pan-gendered, a third gender, and a third sex. It also includes culturally specific terms, such as sistergirl and brotherboy, which are used by some Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.” Oh, so the NDP MP and his supporters wants us to adopt all these sexual behaviours as “gender identities” as protected behaviours. This seems a clear case of moral degradation and neglect to most common sense Canadians. In a second case, Motion 408 (different than a Bill in that it is a statement not legislation) addresses the issue of sex selection abortion. The concern raised is that some women decide to abort the unborn child if it is not the gender (male or female) they desire. This can be a cultural, social or economic driven decision. The motion presented by a BC Conservative MP caused major crisis. In fact the response to this went so far as to say this issue was not debatable or votable in the House of Commons. Who made that decision and why? MP Mark Warawa felt it an issue which government should discuss (CBC did a story revealing the evilness of such abortions). Would a law follow? Who knows! But surely no law will follow if no debate is allowed. Is the issue of abortion in Canada still a political loser? Would Conservatives get defeated next election if they even discuss this issue? Polls tell us that a majority of Canadians want some legislation on abortion, even if only about who pays for them , the pro-choice individual or the taxpayer. Ninety seven percent said they think some law should prevent sex selection abortion (gendercide). This seems a clear case of political expediency decision making. Both decisions ignore the wishes of a majority of voters and taxpayers. Why does government fail to respond to the wishes of citizens? Both political expediency and moral neglect lead to bad decision making and dangerous law. The once respected Biblical truths and morality must again be the foundation of all law.

Under the magnifying glass: working with a micromanager by Eric Fehr Sunlight focused through a magnifying lens on paper creates fiery results. The power of the sun has destructive potential from a simple device. While the magnifying glass is a great tool for inspecting the smallest details, it can focus too closely on an object. Adjusting sunlight entering the lens to a fine point produces an amazing reaction on paper. The paper heats up, smolders and then bursts into flames. Now apply this idea to a workplace environment and the effects can be just as destructive to staff in a corporate or ministry setting. This management style is known as micromanaging. Sometimes those in management positions consider it crucial to business to observe every decision, email and action of their employees with relentless scrutiny, all in the name of increasing productivity or quality control. What begins as a useful tool, like the magnifying glass, for ensuring corporate or ministry success, under the careful gaze of an employer, can turn toxic. Anne Brown and Beth Zefo comment in their book Grad to Great that “each act of a micromanager, by itself, may not be so bad. When the whole package is put together, though, these

people become difficult to deal with.” In the beginning, the leader believes he or she is helping their employees succeed. From the viewpoint of the employee the manager makes it difficult for them to succeed or function. Similar to the paper beneath the magnifying glass, the employee suffers, can’t take it anymore and often chooses to quit. Human resource manager Andrew Coutermarsh notes in his article The High Cost of Micro-Management that some side effects of a micromanagement workplace situation are low morale, tardiness, frustration, low productivity and anger. Is it possible to succeed in this workplace situation with this type of scrutiny? An employees job isn’t to fix their boss, but options are available when working under a micromanager: submit, quit or engage. One choice is to “obey your leaders and submit to them” (Heb. 13:7) and work under them without complaint. Submitting can lead to indifference towards work. Is this always a good choice? Quitting is another option that offers escape and freedom. In tough economic times quitting is a difficult choice. Finding another job isn’t so easy. Handing in a resignation and leaving the situation might not be the correct option. Instead of quitting, try the third choice: engage. On his

blog post How to Manage a Micromanager, Micheal Hyatt, former CEO of Thomas Nelson Publishers writes, “getting your boss off your back and keeping him Resources for more off usually boils down information and study: to one word: proactivity. “Her psoriasis was so terrible she could not work for six months.”

Psoriasis can be a life-long chronic condition Julia (pseudonym) and a friend have opened a new business in Calgary where they work full-time and are keeping very busy and enjoying life. It wasn’t always easy for Julia however, for she developed a severe skin condition called Psoriasis as a young girl after being on antibiotics. At one point Julia was at an all-time-low. Her Psoriasis was so terrible that she could not work for six months, was confined to her home, could not sleep, was in a lot of pain, and felt she was much disfigured. Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease. For some reason the T-cells (white blood cells which orchestrate our body’s response to infection) attack the skin cells thinking they are an invader. The body responds by overproducing new skin cells which build up on the surface of the skin causing raised reddish patches or plaque, which can be covered with a silverywhite coating or scale. These patches can appear anywhere on the body, and can be very itchy. It is not contagious but can be a life-long chronic condition. There are forms of Psoriasis that can cause ridges, pits and discoloration of the nails; cause hair loss and stiff, painful, swollen joints. It can range in severity from merely irritating to debilitating and even fatal. Julia did not have pain in her joints or nail 6 — MAY 2013, CITY LIGHT NEWS

problems but she did feel very self-conscious about her appearance. Someone at Julia’s church had read about Robert and Margo Kish in City Light News, and told Julia’s parents about them so they made an appointment to see the Kishes right away. Prior to recommending a course of action to their clients, Robert and Margo Kish pray and ask for God’s direction in the process! Then they take clients through a battery of tests including a sophisticated computerized wellness analysis system. By measuring electrical impulses from the body, it can generate 5,000 pieces of information on a person’s condition in just two-and-a-half minutes. Kish employs a holistic approach. By identifying weak areas, deficiencies and imbalances, he is able to customize a plan to purify and strengthen the body, enabling it to heal itself and eliminate troubling symptoms. Other tools Kish uses to assess clients include muscle testing, iris examinations, pH readings and advanced live blood analysis performed by a certified technician. Julia says that Kish discovered, “My lymphatic

system was so overloaded that I was not able to get rid of toxins.” At that point Kish put Julia on, “A strict eating plan with lots of supplements, digestive enzymes for yeast overgrowth, and an allergy desensitization program using laser.” Julia still sees her regular doctor where she receives biologic therapy injections to suppress her natural immunity. Because of this she needs to keep in close contact with Kish and visits him every month to closely monitor her immune system and her psoriasis. “ T h e Kishes have been so accommodating to me and would fit me in anytime day or night. I really want to give them my endorsement. I feel good in general. I am not totally healed so there are still ups and downs. It has been a gradual process but the Kishes have really helped me,” related Julia.

Memoirs of a prairie boy

by Stephen J. Rendall

Where the roses never fade It’s not easy raising children at the best of times and having 12 mouths to feed would mean that there would be many sacrifices. These sacrifices were even more significant for the Nicholas Bauman f a m i l y. N i c wa s born to German M e n nonite parents in Russia, were they had a prosperous farm. His dad died when he was a small boy and his mother moved with some of her children, including Nic, to Canada just before the Russian revolution broke out. Nic married Susan, born of German Mennonite parents, in Canada, close to where they farmed. It is no small feat to uproot your family and move a great distance from your home but this is exactly what the Bauman family did in 1958. Nic and Susie packed up their ten children and moved 400 miles from their farm near Aberdeen, Saskatchewan to Three Hills, AB. The main purpose of the move was for the children to be able to attend the schools at Prairie. The Baumans had been farmers and the move marked a dramatic change in employment for Nic. They joined staff in an associate position, where every winter Nic worked in the carpenter shop and at Prairie’s lumber camp out in the foothills of Alberta. Each spring he would return to farm in Saskatchewan. Later they sold the farm and became full time staff members. After an accident in the carpenter shop, in which he lost part of his thumb and badly damaged two fingers, Nic worked at the dining hall in the dish washing room until spring when he would begin his planting. This time, the planting had a different purpose than growing food. Food for the soul you could call

it. Nic started in a couple of tiny greenhouses, later working in a much larger greenhouse which was constructed specifically for that purpose. He brought the heart of a farmer to this calling and embraced his passion with 100% of his being. He spent numerous hours there, l ov i n g l y tending hundreds of plants, many of which he later planted all over campus. Others he sold to staff members for their private yards. He also made a significant contribution to the campus by planting dozens of evergreens which not only provided some shelter from the howling north winds, but helped give the grounds a warm inviting atmosphere. My own Mother believed that we should not only nurture our bodies, but our souls and spirits as well. Because we lived in the middle of the bald prairie and had a rather spartan house and lot, Mom did everything she could to add some beauty to the equation. In every house we lived, she would plant flowers, shrubs and trees, bringing a taste of heaven to the yard. Each spring she would

www.calgarychristian.com

pile my brother and I into the little red Ford Falcon and off to the greenhouse we would head. As we opened the door, the humid, earthen smell would greet us and so would Nic Bauman. This gentle, soft spoken man would stand amidst thousands of colourful plants and flowers, thrilled to see another customer intent on making their corner of the planet just a little more beautiful. He would visit with my Mom as my brother and I chased each other up and down the aisles waiting for the signal that we were ready to load the car. My Mom and Nic became fast friends and one of their shared interests was their passion for roses. Three Hills, Alberta is not exactly the rose capital of the world and a lot of extra care and attention is needed not only to have them bloom, but to ensure their survival through the long cold winters. He gave her tips on fertilizing, mulching, planting and pruning and in time, Mom grew some fantastic roses. She also tried her hand at raising the Alberta Wild Rose, the flower of the province, but it seemed to grow best in it’s natural habitat, and so that idea was abandoned. Nic planted many rose bushes all over the campus. These roses always took extra care, not only in the growing, but preparing them in the fall for winter.

Sometimes, seeing my Dad on his way home from work, Nic would give him a rose or two whose stem had been broken in a strong wind storm or by a careless biker who had gotten too close. Dad would bring these roses home to Mom. She would put them in a rose bowl or vase on the table, brightening up the room and bringing a beautiful aroma to the space. Whenever I see roses, I think of the old Southern Gospel song, Where The Roses Never Fade. The words were written by Janie West

Metzgar in 1929 and the music composed by her son Robert Metzgar. This song was made famous by The Cathedral Quartet. The lyrics give hope as well as speak about life. One of the lines from the song says; “I am going to a city, Where the streets of gold are paved, Where the tree of life is blooming, and the roses never fade.” I love spring! The promise of fresh growth, new beginnings, rain on the rooftops, the cry of the meadowlark, the vibrant green of the trees and fields and…roses.

Sadly we lost my Mom in 1993 after a 17-year battle with MS. Nic Bauman passed away on February 9th, 2000 at the age of 102, after a life well lived. I sometimes wonder if Nic may still be giving my Mom some tips on how to grow better roses. Stephen J. Rendall is an award winning Canadian music producer. Mayor testifies to power of prayer by P b Peter Fl Fleck k Red Deer’s long-serving mayor, Morris Flewwelling, publicly testified that prayer has made a big difference during the three terms he has led the city. Flewwelling, who will not be seeking re-election this fall, thanked the close to 400 people in attendance at the 10th Annual Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast on April 9 at the Parkland Pavilion in Red Deer’s Westerner Park. Especially during periods of illness and crisis, Flewwelling explained, “It has been very, very helpful to have your prayer and support through all of that time. I tell you that my heels have wings as a result of that. So I would just ask that you continue to pray for those in public life to give them wisdom, discernment and good health.” Both Flewwelling and Red Deer County Mayor Jim Wood were featured at the head table, but the mayors of many of the surrounding communities were also in attendance. Guest speaker, Ron Mainse, co-host of the daily 100 Huntley Street TV program, highlighted the escalating problem of teen suicide in the country. He cited the rise was especially dramatic in this province with a recent report showing “the number of Alberta teens completing suicide has doubled from the previous year.” Everyone at the breakfast was provided with a complimentary copy of the book Not Suicide: Helping You And Your Friends To Live. Mainse encouraged people “to give it to a teen-ager in your life.” This 151-page pocket-sized edition is also available from Crossroads Christian Communications, producers of 100 Huntley Street, for $2.

Are you a grumbler? Choose to rejoice! by Martha Fehr Tommy was only six years old when his short life ended. He had celebrated his sixth birthday in September and on December 2nd, his brother invited a friend from school for a sleep over to celebrate his 8th birthday. The next morning all three boys hurried down the driveway to cross the highway and catch the school bus. Warren and his friend ran ahead and crossed the highway then scrambled onto the school bus. Tommy started to follow them when he noticed a car speeding along the highway. He decided to turn back at the same time that the car tried to miss him by turning to the side of the road. The impact of the speeding car on his little body killed Tommy instantly! When Tommy’s parents checked the pockets of the pants he had been wearing when he was killed, they found his Bible memory verse in the right pocket. It read, “Do all things without murmuring.” – Philippians 2:14. It was a hard message to receive but Melvin and Leona tried to obey it. They grieved deeply for their precious son but they also felt peace, knowing that he was with Jesus in heaven. Recently I’ve been studying the book of Philippians where Paul’s main theme is a reminder to be joyful and rejoicing. While doing an in-depth study on what Philippians 2:14 means, I was seriously challenged

about my own tendency to grumble or murmur. But what exactly is murmuring? The Greek word for murmur is gongusmos which is “a muttering, murmuring, a whispering, grumbling talk in private.” Basically it means that whenever we engage in any of these activities we are manifesting discontent with the way that God is working in our lives. It is the exact opposite of rejoicing! We are to be content as Paul reminds us that he is, in Philippians 4:11, “…for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content.” While doing my study, I was really convicted, especially as I looked up passages in Deuteronomy where the children of Israel seemed to have mastered the art of murmuring. I saw how seriously God takes this. He, in fact, promised those grumblers that they would not see the Promised Land, only their children would. Do you grumble? Think about your day yesterday – when you sat down at coffee time with co-workers and they were complaining about the boss, did you join right in, or did you try to get them to see the positive things about him? When you got your paycheque, did you complain about how many deductions there were? To grumble or murmur is so easy to do and can catch us unawares. I was totally in agreement with the study and determined in my heart that I would make a sincere

effort not to grumble but to be grateful for all of God’s wonderful blessings. This determination lasted until I met with some friends for coffee. As we chatted, the topic of medical issues came up. Soon I joined my friends in complaining about having incompetent doctors and the cost of medications. The Holy Spirit didn’t let me go on very long before He reminded me that

I was grumbling. I tried to change the direction of the conversation and asked God to forgive me. Later, I also confessed my wrongdoing to some of those same friends. We have so much to be grateful for and to think that my complaining is actually a complaint against God is convicting. Please join me in determining to avoid grumbling, complaining, and murmuring words.

CITY LIGHT NEWS, MAY 2013 — 9

Seeing in High Definition by Ian Wilkinson

Parousia - Part 1 This column is dedicated to seeing Biblical words and ideas as clearly as possible. We want to remove, if possible, the lens of men’s traditions, of modern culture and of human philosophy, in order to see what was written as close to what the writers of the various books intended. In this column Bible words like “grace” are redefined to rid them of religious connotation wherever possible. For example, grace means power. Kingdom means government. Love means commitment. This is the first of a three part study on a topic of great importance to accurate exegesis of Scripture. Exegesis means letting the text speak for itself instead of reading into the text meanings that aren’t really there. The author of this column is committed to the belief that the Bible is the inerrant Word of God. Errors do abound. They tend to be errors of translation and in-

terpretation. What God said is true. What gets filtered down to us through various traditions, interpretations and translations is not always true. The danger lies when one of us claims that our interpretation is inerrant. Today we begin to look at a widely held “paradigm” of Bible interpretation with the purpose of maintaining Bible integrity. Our premise is that the Word is true. The paradigm is what might be called Eschatology or the study of end times. How we see the end times or the future affects how we “see” the Scripture. The purpose is not to convince the reader of the accuracy of a particular end time perspective but to convince the reader what the early church thought and why they thought what they thought. They may have been wrong. We have the advantage of hindsight. They had the advantage of hearing the Lord directly in a language they both understood.

The first part of this three part article is not that controversial. Parousia means second coming of the Lord. It is widely held by various end time view points that the disciples believed in the imminent return of Christ. The writings of the New Testament indicate that the disciples believed His parousia was close at hand – within their own generation. The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave Him to show His servants – things which must shortly take place. And He sent and signified it by His angel to His servant John, who bore witness to the word of God, and to the testimony of Jesus Christ, to all things that he saw. Blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written in it; for the time is near. – Rev 1:1-3 NKJV He who testifies to these things says, “Surely I am coming quickly.” Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus! – Rev 22:20 NKJV The book of Revelation begins and ends with the clear statement the parousia is going to happen soon, shortly, quickly. What if we were to read the book believing what it says? What if believing the first three verses is key to understanding the vision? Jesus himself said three times in the end of Revelation, “I am coming quickly.” Assume for a moment that Jesus was being accurate. We normally would have no reason to doubt the accuracy of His words. The reason the early church believed in an imminent return was because they believed the words of Jesus. He taught it. It is likely that Revelation was written prior to the destruction of the Temple in 70 AD. Try reading Revelation as the early church might have believing the first three verses. Laughing Matters

One dab of mean? I was speaking to teenagers and decided to ask them to describe their mother in one word. One said, “Food.” A girl yelled, “Cute!” A guy yelled, “Unibrow!” I kid you not. It’s almost Mother’s Day, that time when we tell stories about our mothers that they can’t necessarily remember. Here’s one my mom can’t recall. She was out walking one day with my sister Ruth. Ruth was four and picked up something disgusting then went to put it in her mouth. Mom snatched it away and said, “Don’t do that.” “Why?” asked Ruth. “Because you don’t know where it’s been. It’s dirty, it probably has germs.” My sister was impressed. “How do you know all this stuff ?” “All moms know this stuff, my mother replied. “It’s on the Mommy Test. You have to know it, or they don’t let you be a Mommy.” The two walked along in silence. Finally Ruth said, “Oh...I get it! If you don’t pass the Mommy test you have to be the daddy.” Elementary school kids were asked some questions. Here are their brilliant answers: Why did God make mothers? “She’s the only one who knows where the scotch tape is.” “Mostly to clean the house.” “To help us out of there when we were getting born.” How did God make mothers? “He used dirt, just like for the rest of us. And magic, plus super powers, and a lot of stirring.” What kind of little girl was your Mom? “My Mom has always been my Mom and none of that other stuff.” “I don’t know because I wasn’t there, but my guess

would be pretty bossy.” “They say she used to be nice.” What did Mom need to know about dad before she married him? “She had to know his background. Like is he a crook? Does he get drunk on beer? Does he make at least $800 a year? Did he say no to drugs and yes to chores?” Why did your Mom marry your dad? “My dad makes the best spaghetti in the world. And my Mom eats a lot.” “She got too old to do anything else with him.” “My grandma says that Mom didn’t have her thinking cap on.” Who’s the boss at your house? “Mom doesn’t want to be boss, but she has to because Dad’s such a goofball.” “Mom’s the boss. You can tell by room inspection. She sees stuff under the bed.” “I guess Mom’s the boss, but only because she has a lot more to do than dad.” What’s the difference between moms and dads? “Moms work at work and work at home, and dads just go to work at work.” “Moms know how to talk to teachers without scaring them.” “Dads are taller and stronger, but moms have all the real power because that’s who you got to ask if you want to sleep over at your friend’s.” “Moms have magic. They make you feel better without medicine.” What does your Mom do in her spare time? “Mothers don’t do spare time.”

by Phil Callaway “To hear her tell it, she pays bills all day long.” What would it take to make your Mom perfect? “On the inside she’s already perfect. Outside, I think some kind of plastic surgery.” If you could change one thing about your Mom, what would it be? “She has this weird thing about me keeping my room clean. I’d get rid of that.” “I’d make my Mom smarter. Then she would know it was my sister who did it and not me.” “I would like for her to get rid of those invisible eyes on her back.” What ingredients are mothers made of ? “God makes mothers out of clouds and angel hair and everything nice. And one dab of mean.” Mom, we thank God for you. You are a great blessing! Keep it up. And kids, tell your mother how much you love her today. Be nice. You mention the word unibrow and you’ll find out she’s one dab of mean. Phil Callaway is an author and speaker. Find out about his hit radio show “Laugh Again” at laughagain.ca.

Local Christian choir brings message of hope Calgary, AB – Harmony through Harmony (HtH), one of Calgary’s most unique vocal ensembles, is gearing up for a cross-Canada tour to help raise awareness about social justice issues. “When people hear about topics like human trafficking, or the sexual exploitation of women and children, we don’t usually think it’s happening in our own backyards,” said Beth McLean Wiest, executive director of HtH. “The truth is that this is happening all over the world, including Canada, and we hope to shed light on this for our audiences during our tour.” HtH is a not-for-profit organization that seeks to develop leaders, expand world views, build community, and fight for justice. Each week members meet to practice music and learn

about various social justice issues through book studies and current events. They then take what they’ve learned and create awareness concerts to move audiences to compassion and action and inspire hope. Since its inception in 2009, HtH has helped raise over $250,000 for organizations that are actively working for justice such as International Justice Mission and Opportunity International. “It has been amazing to see how God has been stirring people’s hearts for justice,” said McLean Wiest. “We are blessed to be able to use our music to help move people and we look forward to sharing this message of hope across the country.” This national tour marks HtH’s second trip as a group. In the summer of 2011, many members traveled to

www.calgarychristian.com

South Africa to work with children and youth and experienced first-hand some of the issues they had been discussing. The Canada tour will focus mainly on social justice issues within Canada, including injustices in our aboriginal communities and the abuse of children, with the hope of inspiring the nation to be voices for the voiceless together.

This year’s tour will kickoff with HtH’s awareness concert Meant to Be Unbroken on Tuesday May 14 at Bethany Chapel, 3333 Richardson Way SW. The concert begins at 7:30 pm. Tickets are $15 in advance or $20 at the door. For more information about the Canada tour, and other HtH performances visit www.harmonythroughharmony.com.

Servants Anonymous loses out to budget cuts Calgary, AB – We are writing to advise you of the recent Provincial Budget cuts and the resulting effect on the Servants Anonymous Facilitated Exit, or SAFE House program. As you may know, in 2009, with the support of the Government of Alberta, Ministry of Justice & Solicitor General (Safe Communities Initiative Funding) the SAFE House program was added to the services which Servants Anonymous Society provides for vulnerable girls and women exiting the sex trade, and in recovery from sexual exploitation, human trafficking, addiction and violence in Calgary. The program received core funding from the Provincial Government for four years. Servants Anonymous Society’s SAFE House is an immediate exit for women aged 16+, who are leaving dangerous and sexually exploitive situations, or who are at risk of being exploited. This includes girls and women (and their children) experiencing homelessness, escaping traffickers, leaving hospital or jail, and seeking an exit and healing from sex trade, trauma,

and addiction. In 2012, the SAFE House received the Provincial Safe Communities Award for Community Crime Prevention from Minister Jonathan Denis, Alberta Justice & Solicitor General. On March 8, 2013 we learned that despite our very successful outcomes and a Social Return on Investment to the government and taxpayers of $8.59/$1.00, our SAFE House would no longer receive core funding from the province. Servants Anonymous Society has been working diligently in an attempt to secure core funding or bridge funding to continue the SAFE House program; however, at this time we have not been successful. As a result, Servants Anonymous Society will be discontinuing intakes into the SAFE House effective May 1, 2013, and will be closing its doors on June 30, 2013. If you would like more info on how to support Servants Anonymous Society, the SAFE House, please contact: Marina Giacomin – Executive Director at 403205-5531, or [email protected] or visit www.servantsanon.com.

Theatre troupe plays with a unique style A Stranger in Need, a Community in Turmoil, an Offender in Their Midst by Peter Worsley Ontario-based theatre troupe Theatre of the Beat is travelling across Canada performing their unique style of production to dig deep into the issues of restorative justice, with a special emphasis on the themes of crime, punishment and faith. Sponsored in Alberta by Mennonite Central Committee and After-Care Ministries, Forgiven/Forgotten was commissioned as a ‘think piece,’ designed to bring awareness regarding various Restorative Justice initiatives in prisons and communities. The play follows a church thrown into turmoil upon learning that an offender will be serving the rest of his parole in their midst. “It really examines the role of our community in how we view and respond to those affected by crime,” said writer Johnny Wideman. “If we want safer, more whole communities, we need to address these is-

sues systemically, going deeper than band-aid solutions.” Forgiven/Forgotten is a fast paced drama that incorporates comedy, movement and video, creating a unique theatre experience like no other. But, when attending a Theatre of the Beat performance, don’t expect a happy ending. Inspired by the belief that, “Art is not a mirror to reflect society, but a hammer with which to shape it,” the troupe’s unique, social justice focus and approach is designed to provoke questions and spark discussion. As the troupe’s Artistic Director, Wideman explained, “Every show is followed up with a question-and-answer period. We believe the discussions afterward are as much a part of the experience as the performance itself. It becomes the ‘Second Act’.” Forgiven/Forgotten can be seen in Calgary on May 30 at Knox United Church, 506-4th St SW at 7 pm and on May 31 at Calgary Inter-Mennonite Church, 1308-Edmonton Tr NE at 7 pm. Admission is by donation. For more information call Mennonite Central Committee at 403-275-6935.

Virtuous woman exposed

Placing a high value on nutrition I love to watch my five year-old try to coordinate jumping jacks or my two year-old try to do sit-ups when I am exercising at home. It is quite the mayhem of grunts, heavy breathing and the occasional close calls with a heel. We take for granted the natural health and stamina our children are born with. Health, to a lot of us, isn’t really an issue until it’s an issue. It is so important to set an example to our families on health and the passing on habits of selfdiscipline when it comes to food and exercise. I am not talking about making the three year-old pump iron, or run a six minute mile, but rather a conscience effort to set an example of healthy eating and living as a family. No more pictures of dad and kids sitting at the table scarfing down bowls of white pasta and pop while mom sits down with her salad and salmon. We have to start thinking in terms of family health not just Mom’s new fad diet. Now that spring is here and summer is coming, it’s a great new start to re-prioritize your families health. Here are five things you can do to get started. 1. Say goodbye to white and hello to whole wheat. Breads, pastas, rice, crackers. They will moan; they will protest but they will thank you. It takes about two weeks to detox a family off of white carbs and starches. I know, we went through that last year. Take charge of your kitchen. It’s not a restaurant, it’s a home where you are setting the values and habits for their future. So don’t let a little or a lot of

whine break you. 2. Salad with everything! I couldn’t get any of my children to eat a morsel of green leafs until one week, yes one week for dinner I served nothing but salads. Kids are predictable creatures, they will fight it but soon they will get hungry enough they will eat it. My kids all love salad now. 3. How much writhing and pleading would happen if you packed up the video games and DSs for the summer. Gasp! Try it! Again 2-3 weeks of detox then you’ll be amazed. 4. Let hotdogs, pop, chips, ice cream, pizza etc. become a treat that the family looks forward too instead of a daily diet. When it is time to treat, look for healthier alternatives. 5. Reevaluate the pace of your home. This is a tough one, and it is so easy to become derailed. We try to pack so much into our days and our kid’s lives that we put karate classes and play dates over family time and rest. A hurried life means a hurried kitchen, drive through meals and frozen dinners. Make family meals a priority and set the pace of your family. Trust me, your children will benefit so much more as a person when the family is together enjoying a healthy meal, strengthening their bodies and relationships than any ballet class could do. Jesus loves hockey players A unique volunteer driven summer hockey camp at Calgary’s Ambrose University College Calgary, AB – While some Alberta teenage boys will be relaxing in the sunshine this summer, others will experience a unique six-day opportunity to receive expert coaching and skills training from current and retired professional hockey players, and acquire life skills to achieve their personal goal of being a “complete hockey player” from a Christian perspective. The Hockey Ministries International (HMI) Calgary Camp (Sunday July 28 to Friday August 2) will be held at Ambrose University College in southwest Calgary. For the past 36 years, HMI has been serving the spiritual needs of the hockey world by bringing the message of hope found in Jesus Christ through hockey camps, as well as chapel programs and clinics. Currently, more than 200 teams in 30 different leagues have chapel programs, and more than 30 camps are held in six countries for 2000 hockey players aged 9-17 each year. Supporting this grassroots driven organization are more than 800 volunteers who passionately support HMI. “Through its camps and chapel programs as well as several local churches and Christian schools, HMI has distributed more than 19,500 Hockey Player New Testaments, which feature pages of stories from pro-players dispersed amongst the pages of Scripture,” said Tim Wiebe, Alberta Representative, HMI. “Players like Shane Doan and Mike Fisher share the struggles and triumphs they have experienced in their hockey careers and how their faith in Jesus Christ has helped them.” Added Wiebe, “Hockey brings many ups and downs and navigating through it can be challenging. Environments that stress performance and winning often place strenuous pressure upon players and their families. Distractions also can sideline players, hindering them from reaching their potential. HMI understands the dynamics of hockey and while empathizing with the pursuit of excellence, seeks to strengthen each player, encouraging him or her to make good decisions.” HMI Calgary Camp Head Counselor Jason Bradley explained what participants can expect at the six-day (July 28 to August 2) camp being held in Calgary. “We offer a one week camp for boys of all skill levels, ages 9-17. A typical camp day includes three hours of on-ice instruction from our experienced pro-level staff, one-hour of off-ice training, small group meetings to talk about life issues or events of the day and evening chapel time.” Bradley noted that players are given excellent skill progressions and drills on the ice by instructors who have benefitted from the chapel programs. The instructors come from various levels of junior and professional hockey including some from the NHL. Campers are in a safe environment as their counsellor has to be with his group of youngsters throughout the day and evening. All members of the volunteer staff have undergone a police check and gone through the application process. Many of the youngsters return year after year as the camp is safe and fun as they learn about hockey and Biblicallycentred life skills. Eve’s uncle Cyrus has invited the family to live and work at his Marryat Island Ballroom and Lodge. Eve can’t wait to leave St. Paul, a notorious haven for gangsters. At seventeen, she considers her family to be “good people,” not lawbreakers like so many in her neighbourhood. Thrilled to be moving to a “safe haven,” Eve soon forms an unlikely friendship with a strange young man named Link, blissfully unaware that her uncle’s lodge is anything but what it seems. When the reality of her situation finally becomes clear, Eve is faced with a dilemma. Does she dare risk everything by exposing the man whose love and generosity is keeping her family from ruin? And when things turn dangerous, can she trust Link in spite of appearances?

Mother’s Day is supposed to be joyous by Theresa Gonzalez I was one person sitting in a crowd of hundreds when a seemingly harmless string of words shook me to the core: “Will all mothers please stand?” Sudden panic enveloped me, causing me to sink down into my seat. All I could do in those agonizing moments was to watch as one by one these women stood. I wanted so much to stand with them. But I knew if I did, I would be inundated with questions that I wasn’t prepared to answer. However, by not standing, was I denying who I was? Was I denying my own motherhood? Was I denying the very existence of my son, the baby boy I placed in a closed adoption so many years ago? May 12th is Mother’s Day, a day to reflect on fond memories and to anticipate the new memories that will unfold. After all, Mother’s Day is supposed to be a joyous occasion, where a woman is surrounded by her children, her spouse, and other family members. Lost in the background are the forgotten mothers, those who placed (or lost) children in the thousands of closed adoptions that took place from the 1960s to the eighties. Unseen in church pews or coffee shops are the women who were forced or pressured to keep their secrets, some even to this day. To many of these women, Mother’s Day is a poignant reminder of children lost, secrets unrevealed, and pain yet to be grieved. I am one of these mothers. When I discovered I was pregnant at 18, I left my family and small town to live among strangers in a maternity home. I gave birth, relinquished my son, still unnamed, and departed alone, hoping to begin a new life. I was expected to forget my “mistake” and move on. Instead, I found myself derailed by emotions I could not face, and by losses that continued to accumulate. My own healing journey did not begin until I finally recognized the longing for my child and the tremendous burden of unresolved grief. Even though I have worked through many issues – anger, guilt, sadness, unhealthy behaviours (or coping mechanisms), forgiveness, a search for my son, and the uncertain possibility of a reunion – one issue continues to affect me to this day: Mother’s Day. I have not seen my son since he was placed for adoption. He is almost 32 years old. I always promised myself that, next time, it would be different. But I have never had a next time: I didn’t have another child. Mother’s Day is not just about the son I lost. It is a sorrow-filled reminder that I will never hear the word “Mom” spoken to me. I have been forced to grieve the loss of any other children in my life. So imagine how uncomfortable I am when someone asks me, “Are you a mom?” How do I respond? “Yes… sort of.” Or do I freeze, just like in the story shared at the beginning of this article? When women and mothers are singled out, what is a birth mother or a silent mom like me supposed to do? Many women may feel that they cannot celebrate Mother’s Day, or even acknowledge their experience on this occasion. Personally, I have chosen positive and constructive ways to honour myself as a mother, even if in secret. I encourage you to do the same – to find ways to acknowledge who you are even if no one else does. Even if you don’t stand during a Mother’s Day service, you are still a mother. Even if you don’t receive the flowers, candy, or gifts on Mother’s Day, you are still a mother. You are like me. And you are not forgotten. My purpose, and the reason why I wrote Silent Moms, is to help other birth mothers heal from their grief and from the shame inflicted by the system that stole their voices. My hope is that these women will find healing, to reach a place in their lives that is no longer painful and full of anger or regret. Please visit my website: www.silentmoms.ca

Fire Exit Theatre presents

God’s Man in Texas Calgary, AB – Calgary’s Fire Exit Theatre proudly presents a pointed look at well organized, merchandised religion, the dangers of pride and ambition and the redemptive power of faith in, God’s Man in Texas by playwright, David

Rambo. Running May 8th – 12th at the Engineered Air Theatre –Epcor Centre. Faith and egos collide in the age of mass-market religion at Houston’s Rock Baptist Church, “the Baptist Super Bowl.” When the search begins for a successor to the 81-year-old legendary pastor, his grip on the pulpit becomes as firm as his faith. These men of God may have their eyes on heaven, but the measure

of their souls is in a very earth-bound mirror. Directed by Val Lieske, the Artistic Director or Fire Exit, co-chair of the Theatre Dept. at Rocky Mountain College (theatre@rocky) and Director of arts@theCentre with Centre Street Church. “God’s Man in Texas is the story of a very successful preacher and his successor, a man who shares the same charisma and commitment,

but who is his own man. The hyper-theatrical and easily corrupted world of televangelism can be too easy a target for both comedy and dramatic irony, but this is a serious play filled with comedic insight,” said Lieske. “David Rambo’s play balances the external temptations of worldly success, empire building, personal ambition and scriptural politics with the inner motivations of true faith and individual character.” “I, in no way, want to belittle the power of the church, even the megachurch. I work at one!” said Lieske. “But no one is exempt from the pull of power and we can all become a little muddied in our vision when you are put on such a high pedestal. This is sort of a warning to all those in positions of power in a business with such high stakes.” Tickets on Sale: God’s Man in Texas Tickets, from $15 to $20, are available at 403-6404617 or email tickets@ fireexit.ca. About Fire Exit Theatre Fire Exit Theatre, now in its eleventh season, is a not-forprofit company that exists to explore the world with a focus on hope, to challenge beliefs and believers to make choices for change. Fire Exit seeks to create a meaningful community engaged in a dialogue on and off stage around faith. “Our faith is traditional – our theatre is not.” Go to www.fireexit.ca for more information.

Music Review Cory Rosenke Bigger Than The Sky With his debut CD a lifetime in the making, 35-yearold Cory Rosenke wanted to make sure that he got it right. So the pastor serving the summertime village of Seba Beach, 54 kilometres west of Edmonton, opted to hook up with one of the top names in the business. To have legendary Vancouverarea producer Roy Salmond work on a project is pretty well guaranteed to elevate it by a few notches. Artists like Carolyn Arends, Paul Baloche, Tom Jackson and Connie Scott are quick to sing his praises. When Rosenke entered Salmond’s Whitewater Productions studio, he was extremely prepared, coming with “every instrument prearranged in my head…I knew exactly how and what I wanted the musicians to play.” But what blew Rosenke away is how incredibly “dialed in” Salmond was. “I fully intended to pour everything I had into this album, but I never could have expected that Roy would do the same thing,” he said. Salmond had lined up top-notch musicians like drum-

reviewed by Peter Fleck mer Phil Robertson and bassist Peter Davyduk, while he personally handled almost all of the guitar and keyboard parts. Rosenke described Salmond as “an unbelievable musician on basically every instrument.” While much of the direction was preset, Rosenke said he was also “open to learn new things.” And so a number of Salmond’s innovations along with his “very cool licks” made it to the CD. Three of the songs also feature a 24-piece string section that Salmond arranged. Describing the recording process, Rosenke said, “We were super meticulous while at the same time trying not to make it so perfect that it was fake.” The end result is an impressive collection of primarily worship songs. Opening the disc with gusto is the radio-friendly title track, Bigger Than The Sky. This energetic roots-rocker does an excellent job of showcasing the raspier side of Rosenke’s vocals while proclaiming the grandeur of God. “You’re greater than the sin I’ve been living in/You’re higher than the songs of praise I sing…No matter what this world may try/You’re still bigger than the sky,” he sings. The project features a balance of faster and slower songs all penned by Rosenke. Also included are a couple

of fairly traditional renditions of the hymns, Jesus Paid It All and I Have Decided To Follow Jesus. Growing up appreciating a wide array of music, Rosenke said his influences “span from George Younce (of The Cathedrals quartet) to Amy Grant and everyone in between.” Not uncommon among independent artists, his music unapologetically incorporates this diversity of sounds. “I’ve always been a believer in matching the instrumentation to the lyric,” Rosenke explained. “Sometimes you need a gritty Les Paul (guitar) to fully emphasize the lyric; sometimes all you need is a cello.” An important counterbalance to Rosenke’s oft-gritty vocals are the fabulous harmonies provided by longtime stage mate Amy Wierzbicki. Many of the tracks are ideally suited for corporate worship and so Rosenke has posted the lyrics and chords on his website. But one of his most popular songs is The Real Me, which exposes our “two-faced” nature as believers, being both redeemed and reprobate. Finishing the album is a bit of a bonus track as Rosenke teams up with young Elisabeth Hildebrand in singing The Lullaby, which is a bedtime prayer Rosenke wrote for his kids. Together they sing, “Dear Jesus, thank you for this day…forgive our sins we pray./Guard our thoughts and dreams tonight, and guide tomorrow’s way.” Available on CD for $20 at select stores and through his website at www.coryrosenke.com or for $15 as a digital download.
