New Park Projects Abound this Spring and Summer!

It’s a time for picnicking in one of our amazing park shelters, long evening walks or bike rides on the River Front Trail, and off-roading on foot or bike at Sunderbruch Park. As we leave the chill of winter behind (hopefully for a few months), a number of new and exciting projects are on the calendar for this spring and summer. Here are the highlights of three projects that we can’t wait to get started: Funding for the Miracle Field of the Quad Cities is currently underway and has already reached the half-way mark. The Miracle Field will be added to the existing Prairie Heights baseball fields and will allow all Quad City athletes, regardless of ability, the opportunity to play. Construction of the field will be 15,000 sq ft in total and will provide enough space for players of all ages to experience America’s pastime! To get involved with this project or to donate, go to: bit.ly/QCMiracleField. Fejervary Park has been selected as a Building Better Communities grant recipient from the American Water Charitable Foundation and NRPA. The awarded $139,700 will be designated for a new interactive, water-based play area at the Fejervary Learning Center. We plan to build off of the Mother Goose nursery rhyme theme, using the children’s story ‘Itsy Bitsy Spider’ to explain water conservation concepts. Another inclusive project that we are partnering with is the Gabe’s Dream Team playground. Gabe’s Play Village will be replacing the existing playground in Davenport’s historic Vander Veer Botanical Park to offer a public, universally accessible playground structure for the Quad Cities. We are also very proud to announce that Davenport Parks and Recreation received its reaccreditation award from the National Recreation and Park Association this past year! Our department was recognized for excellence in the field of parks and recreation management by the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA) and remain the only accredited department in the state. These new offerings, plus all of the opportunities that you’ll find in this guide, will hopefully make this spring and summer another healthy and vibrant season in Davenport! Sincerely, Scott Hock Director of Davenport Parks and Recreation

Davenport Junior Theatre’s Spectrum Theatre: Adaptive & Inclusive Program All children deserve to develop and strengthen their voices. Originally started as a program for youth on the autism spectrum, we’ve expanded our classes to be more inclusive! Every child is unique and striving to develop certain key skills. Whether living with autism or dealing with other challenges that may inhibit expression or communication, we believe these skills can and should be developed. We strive to serve the needs of each child. Many high functioning students prefer or move on to our other Junior Theatre programs.

Spectrum With a focus having fun, we create a rich social experience by implementing the skills used in theatrical interpretation. These skills enhance and develop students' creativity and self-expression. We focus on social skills and interpreting others' communication based on body language, intonation and situational context. The first few classes are about getting to know the students' interests and personalities to better serve the whole child. Our performance uses different approaches from session to session to enhance communication tools. A performance showcase will be held at the end of the term for family and friends.
