A Few Thoughts from Mr. Galati

The Olympics are well underway in South Korea and Team USA is representing our country with feats of athletics achievement. Did you know that the Winter Games are also happening at Llewellyn? Have your kids talked about the Luge, the Biathlon, Speed Skating, Bobsled, Skeleton and other games? Have they told you about the different courses they have run? If not, ask them. Our kids are doing a fantastic job while they are having fun. What better way to learn about Winter Olympic Games than to actually perform them and work together as a team. Thank you to Ms. Bernardo for giving our kids a chance to participate in events that build teamwork and a sense of community, which is, after all, the real point of the games underway in Pyeongchang. This week, I watched how our kids cheered each other on, laughed and gave each other congratulating high fives and fist bumps. The Olympics will continue at Llewellyn through March 1. Way to go TEAM LLEWELLYN and thank you Ms. Bernardo for making PE FUN!

The Fire Drill by: Carter, 2nd grade I like fire drills at school because they get us ready for an emergency. When you hear the alarm sound, you line up. A teacher will lead you to the nearest exit to get out of the building. Your teacher will take attendance when you are outside. Mr. Galati tells us two different times: how long it took to get everyone out of the building and how long it took to make sure everyone was there. When it is safe to go inside, Mr. Galati will excuse you. I hope you know about fire drills at Llewellyn.

Brushing your Teeth by: Avery & Jill, Kindergarten

On Tuesday, Stephanie from Gentle Smile came to our school. She talked about teeth and how to take care of them. Stephanie told us that we have to floss our teeth once a day, we need to brush our teeth twice a day for two minutes and we should eat more carrots. Carrots are healthy and you eat less candy. We will take better care of our teeth because we don’t want cavities. Stephanie taught us how to brush our teeth and how to floss our teeth. We learned that to floss the right way we have to go between our teeth and move it back and forth. At the end of her talk, she gave us a little pouch that had a tooth brush, dental floss, a card and sticker that had a star on it. It was amazing. by L

Valentine’s Day

by: Renia, 5th grade

By Ms.

This week, on Wednesday, A.K.A Valentine’s day, the fifth graders did something special. About two weeks ago, during computer lab, we started making Valentines cards for local businesses. Each person chose a different business, and made a card using Google Drawings. Making the cards, you were allowed to use the functions available to you, (you couldn't download photos from the web). As an example, I did Grand Central Bakery, and created a muffin using different shapes. This was a really fun project, and I hope you look forward to it.

Biography Emma & Hattie (not pictured), 3rd grade

In 3rd grade we are working on a biography project. We are both reading the biography on the people we chose. After we read the book we will write a speech (and maybe an essay) and present it to the class. We both like doing the biography project so far in 3rd grade and we are having a great time!

OMSI

by: Vivian & Nolan, Kindergarten

Mrs. Frisby’s class went to OMSI. We did experiments. We put our hands on a ball and put pie dishes on our hand and someone cranked the spinner. Because of the electricity, we could shock someone, and if you don’t have any electricity your hair will stay down and you won’t shock anyone. We also played in water and we played in the sand. It was fun.

The YMCA

by: Ashley & Matilda, 4th grade

At the YMCA there are toys and games to play with. After outside time, we have quiet time where you can do your homework and play educational games. The YMCA can be found in the gym on Monday-Thursdays and on Fridays they are in the cafeteria. All of the staff are very nice and the YMCA is a wonderful place to be. Melissa (YMCA staff) said “YMCA is community building and is a wonderful place to be after school.”

Small Tall Ball by: Hazel, 4th grade

Did you go to the Small Tall Ball? Lots of kids went to the Small Tall Ball with their Mom, Dad, or other cool grown-ups last Friday to start the Valentine’s season off with an awesome dance. There were drinks, cupcakes, cookies, and chips. They also had a photo booth with fun accessories like sparkly paper glasses and paper mustaches. But in my opinion the best part was dancing. They played upbeat songs like Shut Up and Dance With Me and Can’t Stop the Feeling. They also played oldies like the HokeyPokey and The Cha-Cha. If you did go you must have had a blast!

At A Glance

This week we highlight Phys. Ed., Music and Counseling

Physical Education: The students at Llewellyn are participating in their own Winter Olympics beginning the week of February 5th. They have been placed into groups of five or six students, with each group representing a different country. Over the following three weeks they will be representing and learning about their selected countries while competing to win medals and build community in the classroom. We have prepared a wide variety of events in which the students will participate, ranging from bobsleigh to speed skating to cross-country skiing (all modified to be gymfriendly, of course!). We hope this will be a fun way to tie in school activities with world events. Music: We have been learning some exciting things in Music in this New Year! Our 3rd, 4th and 5th graders have been learning about the composer, Johann Sebastian Bach and what he contributed to music of the past and of today. They are now preparing for their upcoming concerts for both parents and the Symphony! Our 2nd graders have performed their concert and have been playing ukuleles. Kindergarten and 1st grade have been learning songs about snow and have been creating rhythms using words related to snow activities as well as learning more about the instruments of the orchestra. They can identify them by sight, name and sound! Counseling: The theme for the month of February is kindness. As the counselors are going into the classroom to teach the Mind-Up curriculum and Kelso’s Choice - problem solving skills, kindness is a reoccurring subject that comes up in our lessons. Role playing strategies like setting up situations, and talking about them with an entire class, allows students to use problem solving skills, learn about the concept of helping others, and how to be kind to others. Every student is able to take turns being kind to one another in a role playing situation. When we see the same behavior in the classroom, cafeteria or playground, we point it out to students so they can see it modeled in real life. You can help re-enforce the value of kindness at home. Ask them about the kindness situations that they acting out in class. Or have them imagine scenarios where kindness would make a situation better. It is also great to point out times at home when your student is using kindness. Kindness is a life skill that all students can use to create a happy and healthy life.

Amazing Sail

by Julia, 5th grade

Last Friday, Miss Mininger’s and Mr. Crouser’s class participated in The Amazing Sail. Since we have been studying early explorers, our teachers made up The Amazing Sail to wrap up this unit. The whole idea of it was that we would all get into teams and with your team you would complete fun and challenging activities. Whichever team completed all of the activities first would win! Some examples of the tasks we did are: explorer jeopardy, explorer trivia, and an event where you had a straw, a kiddie pool and a ping-pong ball. The kiddie pool had boundaries, and you had to blow through your straw to get the ping-pong ball to the other side of the pool without going out of the boundaries. We also got to make a team flag, and draw our team name out of an envelope. Since the students in Mr. Crouser’s and Miss Mininger’s class had all become experts on one explorer, each

team had one expert about an explorer. But there was a punishment if you were misbehaving-you would be “infected” and you would have to wear a badge that said: “I am infected.” If you were still misbehaving, you would have to be “quarantined” and you had to go sit in the office. I think one of the most challenging parts of The Amazing Sail was that you and your “crew” all had to stay connected by a string which was your “boat.” At the end, every participant received a “No Homework Pass!” I loved “The Amazing Sail” because I got to use my knowledge to get through tasks and felt part of a team. The Amazing Sail required teamwork, perseverance, and knowledge, but it was really fun!
