LAW CAPSULES JOINT AND SURVIVORSHIP DEEDS Since 1974 Ohio has permitted joint and survivorship deeds as between spouses and since 1984 as between any two or more persons. This provides a simple and inexpensive way of avoiding probate of real estate upon death, although it is not for everyone. You should check with an attorney to make sure that this would be right for you. The survivorship right only applies to deeds on specially typed forms, not on every deed with two or more names. Ohio law is not the same as Pennsylvania law, which allows an automatic transfer to a surviving spouse on a deed. Check your deed or let us review it for you. Addyson Jones, Hahlen Award recipient. Contributed Photo.

At the end of each school year, students at West Branch Middle School are honored at an end of the year awards ceremony for their accomplishments throughout the school year. Each year, the 8th grade algebra student with the highest grade point average is awarded the Hahlen Award for their outstanding achievements in math. This year’s recipient was Addyson Jones. She excelled in the classroom, exceeding expectations by missing fewer than 5 points total for the entire school year. This award is named after former math teacher, Tom Hahlen who had a unique style of teaching and was loved by not only his students but staff members as well as the community. He would demand nothing but the best from his students. The West Branch community lost Hahlen after a long battle with cancer several years ago, but his legacy and spirit live on through this prestigious award.

Girard City-Wide Garage Sale

Girard residents will hold a City-Wide Garage Sale on August 2-5. Search for and join the “Girard City Wide Garage Sale-OHIO” Facebook group. The list of participating addresses and a public Google map showing participating locations are shared through the group. Fliers with the list of addresses will be made available to local churches and businesses before the event. The flier will also be available to print on the Facebook page. The Girard community garage sale has been an annual event since 2013. The Facebook group provides a forum both for sellers to post descriptions and pictures of their wares and for buyers who are looking for specific items. Many Girard residents view the annual event as a way to reconnect with friends and neighbors, and local children set up refreshment stands all over the city. The sale officially runs from Thursday through Saturday, though sellers are not required to be open all three days, and some choose to remain open on Sunday as well. Sellers are responsible for providing their own signs.

Superior Hydrogen Hydration to Fuel Your Body!

Did you know that 75% of Americans show signs of chronic dehydration? Chemically treated and over processed water loses its natural electrical charge, stripping it of electrons and robbing it of its natural ability to fight oxidation, aging, and inflammation. With the H2Fuel bottle, you can charge your water to infuse it with anti-aging, electron-rich, hydrogen. H2Fuel uses electrolysis to infuse an adjustable amount of activated hydrogen into drinking water to increase intracellular hydration. With that cellular hydration, the oxidation (oxidative stress) associated with physical exertion and aging will be reduced. With H2Fuel, it's easy to have hydrogen -rich hydration anywhere you go! Local Steward Hospitals Now Feature Industry-Leading App

During any emergency situation time is of the essence. Three local Steward Health Care Hospitals have begun using a HIPPA-complaint app to expedite care in these situations. Northside Regional Medical Center, Trumbull Regional Medical Center and Sharon Regional Medical Center now feature Twiage, an app that allows emergency responders to share patient information with hospital personnel real-time, to expedite lifesaving care. Twiage offers emergency responders the ability to use a smartphone to share real-time patient data and send HIPAAcompliant photos and videos. Designed by physicians and emergency medical technicians, the app allows hospital personnel an extended method to prepare cath labs, operating rooms, stroke teams, and hospital beds well in advance of a patient’s arrival to the ER. “This computer based system permits fast and efficient communication between EMS and the ER. The app allows for two way communication between EMS and hospital personal including things like pictures and videos, which would not be available via older technologies like radios.” said Matt Ozanich, Director of Pre-Hospital Care at Northside Regional and Trumbull Regional. The award-winning technology also contains GPStracking to help hospitals plan estimated times of arrival, ultimately shaving life-saving minutes off of treatment time to improve patient outcomes. “In emergency care, speed and information save lives,” said Brenden Hayden, Vice President of EMS, Steward Health Care System. “With Twiage, Steward’s emergency departments in the Mahoning Valley will be able to treat people even more quickly, delivering the highest standard of care to patients across the communities in which they live.” A number of municipal fire departments and private ambulance companies in the Valley are utilizing Twiage, including: Howland Fire, Brookfield Fire, Cortland Fire, Liberty Fire, Medstar, Lane LifeTRANS Paramedics, EMT, Elite, LifeForce, McGonigle, Superior, CAS EMS, Vienna Fire, Johnston Fire, McDonald Fire, Newton Falls Fire, American Medical Response, Canfield Fire, Southington Fire, Ellsworth Township Fire, Green Township Fire and Windham Fire.

Struthers Rotary contributes to maintenance of Yellow Creek

Yellow Creek dredge is complete thanks to Pat Bundy, Jeff and Bonnie Rudzik, City of Struthers, Mill Creek Metro Parks and CASTLO. Jeff's crew started Friday and worked all day Saturday to complete the dredge project. Pat Bundy organized the project and coordinated the truck route not to inhibit traffic. The material dredged from the pool was piled and drained some of the water. Jeff’s trucks transported the dredge material to CASTLO. The Struthers street department kept the streets cleaned. CASTLO Industrial Park accepted the material, greatly reducing travel time between loading and unloading the trucks. Struthers Rotary contacted Mill Creek Metro Parks inquiring about dredging the pool. Metro Parks had the project in their plans. Struthers Rotary will contribute to the dredging of the Yellow Creek pool. Contributed Photos.

Struthers Rotary seeks to provide career advice Rotarian Tom Baringer delivered a presentation at the June 19th meeting of the Struthers Rotary Club on the activities of the Mahoning County Educational Service Center Business Advisory Council. The mission of the council is to advise, support, and empower Mahoning Valley educators in delivering the instruction and experiences students need to develop relevant, in -demand employment skills as part of their academic and technical preparation for college, careers and or military service. Not all of these careers require a college degree and many of the occupations identified are facing a shortage of employees in the near future. To assist in efforts to provide meaningful information to both students and prospective employers it has been suggested that a Rotary Career Day be re-

instituted in Struthers. The intent of the program would be to provide information to students, parents and teachers on the careers that have a near term need to fill an employee shortage and to help target educational programs to build the skill sets needed for those occupations. A "Career Night" is being planned for October at the high school during a scheduled parent/ teacher conference that might provide a suitable venue to place prospective employers in contact with students, parents and teachers to help identify career paths and educational requirements for them. A separate but related event associated with a regular Struthers Rotary meeting is also envisioned that would provide students with information provided by potential employers who are facing near term em-

Austintown Jr. Women’s League Visits Memorial

Following the G.F.W.C. Ohio “State Information Day” in Loudonville, members from across the state visited the Ohio Memorial Forest & Shrine located in Mohican State Park. The Shrine which was a project of the G.F.W.C. Ohio Federation of Women’s Clubs was dedicated in 1947. Inside the Shrine are books which list the names of men and women from Ohio who lost their lives in service to our country in WWII, the Korean War, the Vietnam Conflict, the Persian Gulf War, and wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The G.F.W.C. proudly maintains the Shrine through contributions from members and the sale of engraved brick pavers. Locally, clubs from Austintown, Boardman-Poland, Canfield, and Warren visited the Shrine with Ohio President Linda Crish. Many more photos and information can be found on Facebook at AJWL2014. Kids and Counselors Enjoy an Enriching Experience at Camp Whitewood

Samantha Hurst, Trumbull OSU Extension The first day of summer may have just passed, but summer fun is well under way at Camp Whitewood in Windsor, Ohio. This 4-H camp, founded in 1940, has been educating and inspiring the children of its surrounding communities for more than three quarters of a century, and this year is no exception. Kids travel from Lake, Columbiana, Geauga, Trumbull, and Ashtabula Counties in staggering weeks between June 10th and June 30th. During my visit, the camp was hosting 114 kids, ages 8 to 14, and 25 counselors, ages 15 to 18, from Trumbull and Geauga counties, all enjoying their camp experience. Set far back into the woods off of Route 322 near Orwell, Camp Whitewood features 227 acres of pristine stomping ground. With a private lake complete with a beach and canoe launch,

hiking trails, and babbling streams that pass right next to campers’ cabins, Camp Whitewood is just the type of place that makes one yearn to be a kid again. I had the pleasure of getting a private tour of the campus by Ashlee Dietz, the Trumbull County 4-H Educator and Camp Director. Though Ashlee herself was never a camper at Camp Whitewood, both her mother and grandmother were. She continues her family’s tradition, as this is her second year as a Camp Director. This theme of legacy and the desire to keep returning to camp was one that I experienced throughout my visit. Mallory, age 14, one of the campers that I spoke to, had been coming to Camp Whitewood for the last six summers. When I asked her why she keeps coming back, she told me that the environment and staff make her feel welcome. “I get so excited, I start packing a month before camp starts”, she said. She

also explained the pleasure that she gets from watching the younger kids and remembering her own past camp experiences. A few of those younger children, Taylor, Tatumn, and Reagan, all age 11, told me that their favorite thing about coming to camp was seeing their friends from past years and meeting new ones. Counselors too enjoy the social aspects of coming to camp. TJ, age 18, has been a counselor for the last two summers. He says his favorite thing about being a counselor is making sure the kids are having the best possible experience they can. Because he never got to be a camper himself, seeing the kids having such a great time makes the whole thing worth it for him. This sentiment was echoed by Tyler, age 19. He also never went to camp as a child, but has worked at Camp Whitewood as a counselor for two years and as the

Assistant Dean of Men for one. He told me that coming to camp and working with the kids makes him feel like a child himself. Dani, age 15, might have said it best when she told me that her favorite thing about being a counselor is having the opportunity to be a positive role model: “Sometimes you ask them their favorite things [about camp] and you are included in that.” It is clear to see that an overwhelming sense of friendship, community, and personal fulfillment have drawn both children and teens to Camp Whitewood for almost a generation. When asked if they wanted to be counselors when they were old enough, every child that I spoke to answered a resounding “yes.” It looks like the spirit of Camp Whitewood will not be going away any time soon.

Help Akron Children’s annual Radiothon by becoming a change bandit

Gather your loose change and become a change bandit. Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley is seeking Miracle Maker change bandits to assist with pre-event fundraising activities for the 10th annual Miracles & Promises Radiothon to benefit the hospital. The Radiothon will take place Sept. 27 and 28 from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. each day, and will be broadcast live on Mix 98.9 and 570 WKBN from the hospital’s Beeghly campus in Boardman. Individuals, families, businesses, schools, and civic and community organizations can all participate in this fun and easy program and help raise funds for kids at Akron Children’s. Change bandits can create their own fundraising activities in addition to wrangling donations of spare change from co-workers, friends and family. A kit containing a fundraising guide and materials necessary to conduct a change bandit campaign is delivered to all participants, and all donations and change bandits are recognized during the Radiothon. “As we celebrate our tenth anniversary in the Mahoning Valley, we look forward to the community coming together and making this year’s change bandit program and Radiothon a success,” said JoAnn Stock, senior director of development, Akron Children’s Hospital. The Radiothon has been the hospital’s largest fundraising event of the year, and provides the community with the opportunity hear stories about programs, physicians and local families who have been helped by hospital. One hundred percent of the funds raised during the Change Bandit Campaign and the Miracles & Promises Radiothon are used in the Mahoning Valley to benefit local children and families. Since 2009, the Radiothon has raised more than $1.8 million. Register to become a change bandit at www.miraclesandpromises.org or by contacting JoAnn Stock at 330-746-9122 or [email protected].

Reunion Time for local families July 2018 News from Western To any family member related to the Mitchells, Browns, or Wittenauers: our family reunion will be held Sunday, July Reserve Rangers 4-H Club 29th at the home of Jeff & Andrea Swogger. We will gather at noon with a plan to eat at 2pm. Each family will bring a covered dish, salad or dessert to share.

Library Director visits Rotary

Rotarian Pete Pirone introduced Aimee Fifarek, Executive Director for The Public Library of Youngstown & Mahoning County, at the June 5th meeting of the Struthers Rotary Club. Originally from Wisconsin, Aimee took charge of the 15 libraries in the Mahoning Valley in December of 2017. She reported that three libraries have been renovated since her tenure began and related the many new changes that are planned to invigorate the library system. In addition to informational products such as books and the internet the library system has installed scanners, printers, button-makers and “makerspace” 3-D printers to foster STEM education and learning. The summer program theme this year is “Libraries Rock” and Aimee pointed out that libraries are not ‘just books’ any longer. The summer programs are aimed primarily toward kids but adults are welcome at all activities. The “animals” program this year features a baby kangaroo among the many creatures about which our youngsters may learn. There are plans in place to rearrange the library system but the prior intention to close and consolidate branches has been abandoned. Methods are being applied to foster increased usage of the existing branches and many changes have already been implemented. The local libraries are working more closely with their nearby schools and have upgraded their facilities to be more attractive venues for the schools and local business and community groups to use. Much more information on using the library system for learning, educational projects, business activities and entertainment is available on the web at http:// www.LibraryVisit.org or on Facebook at https:// www.facebook.com/librarymahoningcounty.

Several Ranger members were missing this meeting as they were enjoying the rustic outdoors at 4-H Camp Whitewood in Ashtabula County. The members were both campers and camp counselors. 4-H Queen Tiffany Voland has been busy visiting Ohio County Fairs. She recently attended Putnam, Trumbull, Harrison and County Fairs. The next meeting will be on August 9, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. at the Ellsworth Fire Hall. This meeting is for all family members. 4-H members will be sharing about their favorite 4-H Project.

The Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley today announced a new grant from the Morgan Stanley Foundation to support the food bank’s fresh produce program. The funds will be used to increase the food bank’s ability to access, transport and store fresh produce and provide fruits and vegetables for local residents. “We are proud to continue our commitment of providing fresh produce to children and their families. This grant will make healthy foods available to those who might otherwise not have access to them,” said Joan Steinberg, Global Head of Philanthropy at Morgan Stanley and President of the Morgan Stanley Foundation. “By providing the people we serve with increased access to fresh fruits and vegetables, we give them the building blocks for a healthy life,” said Michael Iberis, executive director of Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley. “We are excited to work with Morgan Stanley to help improve the health of the people we serve.” Food insecurity continues to be an issue facing millions of Americans. According to data from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) released in September 2017, 41 million people in the United States are living in foodinsecure households, 13 million of whom are children. Feeding America’s Hunger in America 2014 study found that 89 percent of Feeding America’s client households with at least one child lacked reliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food.

ASK THE LIBRARIAN “In old documents, why is there an f sometimes when there should be an s?” One of our patrons was looking at old deeds and wasn’t sure what to do with words like “aſsigns.” (“Congreſs,” at the very beginning of the Bill of Rights, is another example.) It was clear what the words should be, but what was that strange letter? According to Michael Rosen in his book Alphabetical: How Every Letter Tells a Story, it’s the long s, and it fell out of English use in the mid-nineteenth century. The 1817 edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica uses it, but the next edition, published in 1823, does not. Marko Ticak, in the article “A Short History of the Long S” on Grammarly.com, tells us more about the letter’s past. The long s began in old Roman cursive as a letter resembling a check mark. By the fifteenth century, it looked somewhat like an f and was used at the beginning or in the middle of words, while the s that we recognize (known as the short or round s) was used at the end of a word. The short s could also make an appearance in the middle of a word if the long s had already been used, like in “aſsigns.” While printers stopped using the long s in the early 1800s, it took longer for people to stop using it in their handwriting.
