Information Package - Expressions of Interest – Interim Director, Research Program Australia’s National Research Organisation for Women’s Safety (ANROWS) is calling for expressions of interest for the role of Interim Director, Research Program, to lead the management of knowledge production including external grants management. The position is for an initial period of three months with the possibility of extension. Subject to satisfactory performance, the successful candidate will be encouraged to apply for an on-going position.

ANROWS is funded primarily by the Commonwealth and state and territory governments of Australia to assist them in achieving the National Plan’s vision of women and their children living free from violence and in safe communities. Through its knowledge production function, ANROWS support the production of evidence to guide Australian governments and practitioners in their work towards ending violence against women and their children.

About the position This role is critical in the delivery of Australia’s National Research Organisation for Women’s Safety (ANROWS) knowledge production function. This is a senior position and part of the ANROWS leadership team. The position will lead the development and implementation of ANROWS’s strategic vision and activities related to knowledge production, provide strategic advice on organisational and violence against women issues, manage and supervise ANROWS’s Senior Research Officers, and will collaborate with other members of the ANROWS leadership team and our National Plan partners and other stakeholders to deliver our strategic goals. This is a full time position (37.5 hours per week) reporting to the Chief Executive Officer and is located at the ANROWS national office in Sydney (Level 11, 31 Market Street, Sydney, NSW 2000). The appointment is for an initial period from commencement for a period of three months, with the possibility of extension beyond that date.

Remuneration and leave entitlements The salary range for this position is $134,386 to $143,852 per annum plus 9.5% employer contributions to the employee’s chosen superannuation fund. ANROWS staff are entitled to 4 weeks pro rata annual leave, in addition to personal and sick leave. Key responsibilities 1. Lead the establishment and implementation of ANROWS’s Research Program/s with particular attention to ANROWS’s Research Management System and mandate to produce research of relevance to policy and practice to reduce the incidence and impact of violence against women. 2. Provide management and supervision of ANROWS’s knowledge production staff (including project staff who may be engaged from time to time) including staff selection, resource and workload prioritisation and building and continuously developing staff capability. 3. Provide expertise, analysis and critical assessment of research on violence against women. 4. Provide strategic and organisational advice and support to the CEO. 5. Undertake leadership and stakeholder relationship functions including liaison, consultation and the provision of advice to policy-makers and jurisdictional representatives, and representing ANROWS in research-related consultations and forums with external bodies. 6. Capacity building, networking and partnerships including establishing and maintaining relationships with researchers in the violence against women field in Australia and overseas, and developing relationships with, and facilitating relationships between, key stakeholders in government, services, non-government organisations and communities. 7. Make a range of decisions within delegated authority including operational expenditure, funding, and resourcing decisions. 8. Provide assistance to the CEO as directed.

Selection criteria Essential 1. Expertise in one or more areas of violence against women and/or their children, including an understanding of the role and impact of gender and other inequalities in relation to that violence. 2. PhD, or equivalent experience in research design and implementation, in the social sciences (preferably in sociology, social psychology, criminology, or socio-legal studies). 3. Expertise across the range of social science methodologies, which may include quantitative, qualitative and applied research. 4. Experience designing, supervising and managing social science research on gender-related issues preferably including work in the field of gender and violence. 5. Experience supervising staff and demonstrated ability to lead a team to meet organisational objectives within strict deadlines. 6. Exceptional analytic and strategic thinking, written and oral communication skills. 7. Understanding of social policy and the application of research to policy, programs, and practice.

8. Demonstrated interpersonal and networking skills, including proven capacity to build and maintain positive professional relationships and partnerships and capacity for negotiation and collaboration with a diversity of organisations and categories of stakeholders. 9. Understanding of issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and competence, or the ability to acquire competence, in working effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities.

Desirable 1. Strong record of published research. 2. Experience working effectively with government agencies and non-government organisations in formulating research topics, conducting research and applying the results of research.
