Provide a platform for enhanced scientific and technical discourse and knowledge sharing on health management, use diversification, and adaptation to and mitigation of climate change impacts on banana among regional/international banana researchers; Demonstrate novel technological advances and R&D outputs, especially on banana diseases, from Taiwanese scientists through field and facility visits; and Provide an opportunity for productive interaction and to foster collaborative undertakings among scientific and industry experts to further advance banana R&D in the region and beyond.

Thematic Areas The Symposium will cover the following thematic areas: • Current and emerging knowledge and technologies for disease and pest management of banana; • Advances in commercial micropropagation system for the production of healthy tissue culture seedlings; • Novel tools and methods to identify, characterize, evaluate and utilize banana germplasm resources; • Value-adding technologies and products in processing banana for nutrition and aesthetic purposes; • Sustainable banana production through improved plant soil health management; and • Assessment and mitigation of climate change impacts on banana production.

The Scientific Program

The scientific program will comprise plenary lectures by internationally renowned banana scientists, technical oral presentations, and poster presentations and exhibition. Contributed technical papers will be accepted on the basis of selection, screening and recommendation of the Scientific Committee. Poster session is arranged to present the participant’s R&D output and accomplishment in line with the topics of the Symposium. Posters will be displayed during the whole Symposium period.

Guidelines for Submission of Abstract

• Abstract should be composed of 250-300 words, single paragraph and with lines single-spaced. Text should be justified (except for title), all boldface, and with first line indented at 0.5”. • Use a A4 size paper with the following margin settings: top: 2.7 cm (1.06”); bottom: 3.5 cm (1.38”); left: 2.8 cm (1.10”); right: 2.9 cm (1.14”). • Submit abstracts to: Dr. Agustin B. Proceedings

Accepted papers will be published electronically as conference proceedings in the website of Bioversity International.

SYMPOSIUM INFORMATION Registration and Hospitality Desk The registration and hospitality desks will be situated at the lobby of the International Ballroom (tentative), 5th Floor, The Lees Hotel. Registration will be from 15:00 to 18:00 on November 18, 2012 and from 08:00 to 10:00 on November 19, 2012. Upon registration, fully registered participants will get a Symposium Kit which contains a copy of the program and abstracts, notebook, meal tickets, invitation cards to social events, and a name badge. Symposium Venue The main activities of the Symposium will take place at the International Ballroom, 5th Floor, The Lees Hotel situated in Kaohsiung, Taiwan (know more about Kaohsiung http://www.kcg.gov.tw/EN/ Index.aspx). The Secretariat Office The Secretariat Office will be set up near the main conference room to facilitate and assist participants during the Symposium. Services will be available from 13:00 to 18:00 of November 18 and from 08:00 to 17:00 of November 19. Speakers are requested to coordinate with the Secretariat Office for necessary arrangements for their presentations. Manuscripts All full papers should conform to the Acta Horticulturae Styleguide (http://www.ishs.org/wri/ pap1.htm). Papers should be limited to a maximum of 8-typed pages, single-spaced, including photographs, illustrations, tables, etc. Full papers submitted by facsimile will not be accepted for publication. For Oral Presenters, submit two (2) print copies of your manuscripts and a text file (Microsoft Word 2000 or higher including pictures, images or other graphic object files with resolution of at least 300 dpi) in a CD-ROM to the Secretariat Office upon registration. Posters Posters will be on display adjacent to the conference room for the duration of the Symposium. Presenters are requested to check the program for the board assignment, which corresponds to their board number. Each poster exhibit will be provided with one mounting board measuring 1.8 m high and 1.2 m wide. Posters should be mounted from 13:00 to 18:00 on November 18 (ingress) up to 17:00 of November 21 (egress). Presenters are requested to be by their poster location on the scheduled viewings (to be indicated in the 3rd announcement). Poster presenters are responsible for clearing away their exhibit at egress before 18:00, November 21, 2012. Language English is the official language for all scientific sessions and Symposium communications and publications.

Visual Aids The following facilities will be made available for use of speakers in their presentations: LCD projectors and laptops. Invitation Cards Invitation cards will be provided to participants who are eligible to attend the tours and social events. Please remember to bring your card with you at all times. Transportation Options 1. Pick-up service. TBRI will provide pick-up service for Symposium participants from Kaohsiung International Airport to The Lees Hotel from November 17 to November 21, 2012. 2. Taxi. The Lees Hotel is about 20 km from the Airport which will only take about 15 minutes travel. 3. Metro/Underground. Take the red line at Kaohsiung International Airport (from R4) to Central Park (at R9). Take the elevator at Exit 2 (near President Department Store), then walk across to Wu Rd. Take a taxi eastbound going to The Lees Hotel. 4. By Taiwan High Speed Rail (TSHR). Ride the southbound THSR from Taoyuan International Airport to Zuoying terminal in Kaohsiung from where a taxi can be hailed going to the hotel. Social Events A Welcome Reception is scheduled in the evening of November 19, 2012 at the Dalukan Hotel & Spa, Pingtung. To cap off the Symposium, a Farewell Party will be held on November 22, 2012 at the Banana Pier, Kaohsiung.

Educational Field Tour On the last day of the Symposium (November 22, 2012), a one-day educational field tour has been arranged where participants would have an actual view of the novel technological advances and R&D outputs, especially on banana diseases, of TBRI and local farmers. On the side, the participants would be treated to a sightseeing to have a glimpse of the rich cultural heritage of southern Taiwan. Places to be visited are: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

TBRI to see the field genebank of somaclones of Cavendish banana with resistance to Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. cubense TR4 (Foc TR4), banana plantation that employs organic farming, postharvest site of Cavendish banana for export; TBRI experimental plantations with somaclone varities (“Formosana” and “Tai-Chiao No.1”) that have moderate resistance to Foc TR4, and an improved “GCTCV-105” clone with high resistance to Foc TR4; Farmers’ field that is Foc TR4 infested and where “Formosana” has been established for more than 10 years; and TBRI research facilities including in vitro mass propagation and virus indexing laboratories: Taiwan Indigenous Peoples Culture Park where endemic aboriginal tribes can be found and a visit to Fo Guang Shan Monastery, Buddha’s Mountain (http://www.fgs.org.tw/english/index. html).

Refreshments and lunch box will be provided. All registered participants are automatically admitted free of charge. Those who wish to join the field tour, please register with the Secretariat. Meals For vegetarians and those with dietary restrictions, please inform the National Organizing Committee beforehand.
