The United Nations University (UNU) is searching for an entrepreneurial director for its Institute in Bruges, Belgium which focuses on regional integration issues. The principal objective of UNU-CRIS is to contribute through research and training to a better understanding of the processes and impact of intra-and-inter-regional integration from multi-disciplinary and comparative perspectives. The aim is to build policy-relevant knowledge about new forms of governance and co-operation and to contribute to international policy debates. The research and postgraduate education activities of UNU-CRIS will be carried out by staff researchers and visiting scholars and through networks of co-operating Institutions and scholars.

Responsibilities: The Director reports to the Rector of the United Nations University, and has overall responsibility for the direction, organization, administration and programmes of the Institute on behalf of the Rector of UNU. As such, the preferred candidate should have an established scientific profile in comparative regional integration studies preferably from a trans-disciplinary perspective, giving to UNU-CRIS the necessary prestige in the international scholarly community. The Director is also responsible for guaranteeing scientific excellence through internal quality control and providing guidance and inspiration for the conduct of UNU-CRIS research activities. The Director will need to ensure that UNU-CRIS research contributes to important policy debates within the United Nations and Member States based on the outcomes of the Institute’s research programme. S/he should also be able to further strengthen the outreach of UNU-CRIS with universities in the host country, in Flanders, and in developing countries. A key responsibility for the next director will be the diversification the sources of funding available for the work of UNU-CRIS, and placing the Institute on a path of sustainable growth.

Required Qualifications and Experience: The successful candidate should have: • A PhD in one of the social sciences, including political science, law, geography, economics;  A strong research background and publication record in the area of regional integration studies with special emphasis on comparative research; • A reputation for visionary leadership in an academic or research institution; • Demonstrated capacities in building and sustaining international networks and partnerships; • Strong international fund-raising skills and experience;  Knowledge of the United Nations and its functions and activities;  Excellent management and communications skills favouring work with colleagues from diverse cultural and disciplinary backgrounds;  Fluency in English; fluency in at least one other official language of the United Nations is desirable;  A deep commitment to issues of human development and welfare. Familiarity with the research and higher education sector in Flanders would be desirable. Remuneration: Approximate net salary (free of tax) of US$ 130,000 (single status) – US$ 143,000 p.a (with dependants) including post adjustment. Post adjustment is subject to change. The post carries the standard set of UN entitlements/benefits, including participation in the United Nations Joint Staff Pension Fund, the possibility of participation in a health insurance programme, maternity/paternity leave, education grant for eligible children, removal expenses and home leave. Duration of Contract: The period of initial contract would be for a four-year term with the possibility of renewal for a further four years on the basis of excellent performance. The mandatory retirement age in the United Nations is 65 years. Starting Date: It is expected that the appointee will take up the position in autumn 2015.
