celebrates International Yoga Day june 21 WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN? Sanskrit for "yolk", the term "yoga" is most commonly interpreted to mean "union" or "connection." At its most practical level, yoga is a process of advancing one's awareness, well-being and contentment through a fusion of physical, mental and spiritual practices. It encourages a conscious, integrated awareness of mind, body and spirit that empowers the practitioner to connect with the highest self. Yoga asks the individual to rise beyond common, temporary cycles of pleasure, wanting and suffering and offers liberation in return.

it's more than just the poses HOW DID IT BEGIN? While an exact date is unknown, scholars agree that yoga originated in northern India about 5,000 years ago. The earliest written scriptures that reference "yoga" are collectively known as the Vedas and date back to around 1500 BCE in ancient India. Between 400 and 100 BCE, the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali were printed, detailing the eight limbs of yoga. In the early 18th century, yoga traditions started to make their way west. Today, yoga is practiced all over the world and continues to grow in popularity.
