Frederick closure Frederick, from Duke to Charles, recently closed for utility upgrades and relocation. This work requires a full closure of the King/Frederick intersection until approximately early-October as well as a full closure of the Frederick/Duke intersection until approximately earlyNovember. The Borden and Charles intersection was recently paved

During this time, sanitary, storm and watermain infrastructure will be replaced and relocated in advance of installing the ION LRT tracks and related infrastructure for ION. When completed, Frederick – like all streets along the ION corridor – will have new utilities, sidewalks, curbs and asphalt. Once utility work and road reconstruction is completed, work will also begin on the Frederick stop – located on Frederick, between King and Duke.

Waterloo BIA update

ION contests The ION and Grand River Transit (GRT) ’thank you’ contest, as well as the #ShopCourtland contest wrapped up in July. For six months, ION and GRT teamed up to thank GRT riders for their patience during ION construction. Each week, a participant was randomly selected as the winner of a GRT monthly pass. ION and GRT would like to thank all those who participated in this contest as over 200 entries were received.

Staff from the Region, City of Waterloo and GrandLinq were on hand Tuesday, July 26 to provide an update to businesses on ION construction in UpTown Waterloo. Earlier this summer, it was confirmed that the lion’s share of LRT construction in UpTown is expected to be completed in time for the Christmas shopping season. The Region and GrandLinq regularly provide an opportunity for businesses to ask questions and provide feedback about ION construction at bi-monthly meetings.

The #ShopCourtland contest encouraged residents to visit a business on Courtland and to share their receipt on twitter – from there they were entered in to win a gift certificate from a business on Courtland. Stay tuned for more information on upcoming contests on our website.

About ION ION, the Region of Waterloo's rapid transit service, which was approved by Council in June 2011, is a visionary plan that will help shape the community for the future by bringing LRT to the region in two stages. Stage 1 includes a 19 kilometre LRT route from the Conestoga Mall transit terminal in Waterloo to the Fairview Park Mall transit terminal in Kitchener. Construction of ION LRT is underway, with the service set to launch in 2018. Stage 1 also features a 17 kilometre route of BRT from the Ainslie Street transit terminal in Cambridge to the Fairview Park Mall transit terminal in Kitchener. The ION BRT service began operations in September 2015. Stage 2 ION will see the Region replace the BRT line with LRT, creating a seamless LRT route with 23 stops between Cambridge and Waterloo
