IRAQ MONTHLY UPDATE - MAY 2016 EDUCATION 35,754 children (aged 5-17) (boys/girls) are enrolled in formal education (primary or secondary)

NEEDS ANALYSIS: Percentage of girls and boys enrolled in School

Transportation of children and teachers to schools, construction of learning spaces, and provision education supplies are still in high demand. In addition, it is necessary to get refugee children into forma education system. Approval is required form the ministry of education to get Syrian refugee children enrolled in schools, in accordance to their level of education, in the next school year, Sept 2016.

MAY HIGHLIGHTS: Erbil: Erbil education directorate issued text books to Al-Zahraa and Al-Nahrain schools where many Syrian refugees hosted to continue their education. Teacher guidebooks were copied and issued in Qushtapa camp. 379 teachers and volunteers who are teaching in camps and non-camps received incentives. Training for 308 teachers, of which 223 in camps and 85 in non-camp refugee schools in Erbil, was completed. An assessment conducted in 33 Arabic schools that are hosting refugee students in Erbil governorate. Minor rehabilitation work in five schools, Afreen, Qamishlo, Jazira, Ismael B and Talar, was completed. 2,282 Syrian Refugee students (1,169 girls) in 7 schools (5 in Erbil & 2 in Sulaymaniyah) received uniforms. English and Kurdish language classes for Syrian refugee youths were organised in Kawergosk and Darashakran camps in Erbil. 162 refugee youths (122 female) were attending the classes to improve their language skills. 182 children (91 girls) benefitted from ECCD and Non-formal Education in Daratu, Erbil governorate. They were provided with end of school year certificate. Duhok: Community assessment was conducted to identify educational needs of the Syrian refugees, living outside the camps in four districts of Duhok governorates. A total of 179 trips were made to transport 190 Syrian refugee children from camps, informal settlements and the local community, to attend schools in Domiz 1 camp, Akre town, Moqoble and Samuel town in Duhok. Sulaymaniyah: Official opening of Arbat camp school was held with participation of camp residence and Sulaymaniyah education directorate. A package of guide books was delivered to this school. Refugee teachers of the school were paid from March to May. A total of 15 teachers were trained to conduct summer

Training on Kurdish language, submission of certificate from Syrian schools, understanding on KRG formal education system, awareness on education and Kawergosk refugee camp primary school (Arabic curriculum) where deploying professional Syrian teachers are IDP from Kawergosk town and refugee from Kawertgosk camp attend additional needs linked with formal classes. Planned response is based on full funding of 3RP for an expected direct beneficiary population of 250,000 Syrian refugees and 1.5 million members of impacted local communities by end-2016. By 31 May 2016, 247,339 Syrians are registered by UNHCR: 39% live in 10 camps and 61% out of camps: About 97%=238,844 Syrians live in Kurdistan Region-Iraq (KRI): in Erbil (115,289), Duhok (92,831) and Sulaymaniyah (30,724) and about %3=8,495 live in other places in Iraq.
