SHELTER NEEDS ANALYSIS:

MAY HIGHLIGHTS: Camp: The overall situation of the sector: Total shelter capacity of Syrian refugee camps is 19,968 shelter units. A total of 15,777 (81%) improved shelter units are constructed (provided with concrete slab, kitchen, family latrine and shower) and 14,176 are occupied. More than 14,000 refugee households (about 69,000 persons) are benefiting from improved shelter assistance in the camps. Construction of a total of 2,528 improved shelter units is planned as part of the 3RP 2016. After completion of ongoing and planned construction, 96.5% of in camp refugee population will have access to improved shelter. 66 % of in camp refugee population will have access to upgraded shelter after completion of ongoing and planned construction. Upgraded shelter refers to construction of 1 to 2 rooms shelter on shelter slab with concrete brick wall and sandwich panel roof.

As far as out of camp refugees are concerned, assistance will target refugee households based on vulnerability criteria. The process will take place in close consultation with local authoritiess, with the provision that landlords do not increase the rent or evict the refugee families.

Limited funding has not allowed for adequate attention to be given to out of camp refugee populations. Substantive needs however remain, such as upgrading of dwellings, rental support and support to community infrastructure.

Number of Improved Shelter Units (Concrete Slabs, Kitchen, Family Latrine and Shower) / Camp

Qushtapa

3,733 new improved shelter plots in Gawilan, Kawergosk, Basirma and Qushtapa need to be constructed. Of those, 2,528 improved plots are planned in 2016 subject to availability of funds. However, even after completing the construction of improved shelter units for which space is available, a total of additional 568 shelter units will be required to accommodate all refugee families that currently live in Erbil camps.

IRAQ RESPONSE INDICATORS: May 2016

Out of camp: 969 shelters occupied by out of camp refugees have been repaired. 460 refugee families received rental support in Sulaymaniyah and Erbil.

Planned response is based on full funding of 3RP for an expected direct beneficiary population of 250,000 Syrian refugees and 1.5 million members of impacted local communities by end-2016. By 31 May 2016, 247,339 Syrians are registered by UNHCR: 39% live in 10 camps and 61% out of camps: About 97%=238,844 Syrians live in Kurdistan Region-Iraq (KRI): in Erbil (115,289), Duhok (92,831) and Sulaymaniyah (30,724) and about %3=8,495 live in other places in Iraq.
