Is this what you want? ENGELSK: SYRESKADER

The cutting edge of the front teeth has eroded away and the edge has become jagged.

This may be the result if teeth are damaged due to an acidic environment – called tooth enamel erosion. You will never get back the lost enamel. Frequent consumption of acidic foods and drinks such as sugary or sugar-free carbonated drinks, fruit and sweets is the main cause of tooth enamel loss. Medicines and eating disorders that cause hyperacidity can also cause tooth erosion. The manner in which you drink will also greatly affect the probability of tooth erosion. If the damage is severe, the dentist may have to replace lost tooth substance with fillings or crowns.

IF YOU DRINK CARBONATED OR ACIDIC DRINKS SEVERAL TIMES A WEEK, YOU RISK DENTAL EROSION The acid in many drinks may cause tooth enamel to dissolve so the teeth lose their original form. It is not always easy to see the damage yourself, but a common symptom is tooth sensitivity. Examples of neutral and acidic drinks: Acid attack: the teeth are short and small and look like temporary teeth.

NEUTRAL NEUTRAL ACIDIC ACIDIC

HOW TO PREVENT DENTAL EROSIONS ♥ Drink water when thirsty. Acid attack: the enamel at the back of the upper front teeth is completely eroded due to frequent intake of acidic and carbonated drinks.

♥ Keep acidic and carbonated drinks to mealtimes – not in between. ♥ Finish off meals with cheese or milk as this helps neutralize the acid. ♥ Use drinking straws. This keeps the drink away from your teeth. ♥ Wait at least one hour after eating or drinking anything acidic before brushing your teeth. ♥ Several medicines cause reduced saliva flow. Sugarfree chewing gum stimulates saliva production to help neutralize the erosive acids which form in your mouth. ♥ Rinse your mouth with water or fluoride rinse after vomiting or acid reflux.

Acid attack: visible spots on the front of the front teeth where the enamel is partially eroded. Acidic drinks have softened the enamel, and the teeth have been brushed too hard. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and low-abrasive fluoride toothpaste.

♥ Everybody can use fluoride tablets or fluoride rinse. Ask your dentist/hygienist for advice.
