Island to Island Humanitarian Aid Collection Day In light of the terrible plight of refugees in Greece, staff members of the School of Agriculture and Food Science are holding a collection day for goods that are urgently required in the refugee centers. This is part of a wider initiative being organised by Island to Island Humanitarian Aid (see below for details). The collection will take place on Wednesday 20th April. The drop off point is room 1.47 on the first floor of the Agriculture Building, between 11am and 4pm. Please see the list of wanted goods for details of what is being collected. Please only drop off goods that are on this list and remember that clothes and equipment such as buggies should be clean and in good condition. Clothes should be packed in separate labeled bags depending on age and sex and the bags left open. Your help with this has the potential to make a huge difference to the lives of individuals affected by this crisis, so all donations will be really appreciated. Kind Regards The collection team School of Agriculture and Food Science Further details of Island to Island Humanitarian Aid Island to Island: West Cork Humanitarian Aid was established by Carmel Nic Airt in January 2016, in reaction to the plight of refugees coming to Greece, the risks they were taking to find a better life for themselves and their families, and the lack of resources available to them on their arrival. Having worked as a principal in an Irish language school (Gealscoil) for 25 years, Carmel went to Marburg, Germany, in November 2015 to help staff at Sophie von Braubant school work with refugee children who spoke no German or English. As the policy in Gaelscoileanna is complete language immersion, this was a familiar situation to Carmel and she was able to give them the benefit of her expertise. However, having returned to Ireland, Carmel felt compelled to do all in her power to help refugee children in their extreme need. Island to Island carried out an intensive fundraising campaign in February 2016, to raise money for Carmel to bring to Greece. On February 26th Carmel went to the island of Leros, Greece, where she volunteered in a centre called Pikpa. All funds raised were spent on the needs of the refugees she encountered there. Since returning to Ireland, Carmel is determined to continue helping refugees in whatever way she can. She is currently collecting clothing, medical supplies, personal hygiene and sanitary products, buggies and wheelchairs, to personally

bring back to Greece and distribute. A 40’ truck and driver have already been sourced free of charge for this journey, and she is now endeavouring to fill it. They depart on 23rd of April. Any assistance that can be given to this project, or further fundraising events would be gratefully appreciated. All funds raised go directly into helping refugees – any expenses incurred by Carmel or other fundraising team members are paid for personally.
