As we approach the end of a very busy and rewarding first term, our students have engaged in many diverse activities. These activities include: competing in Sports Day; enjoying excursions to the Clipsal; SRC elections and leadership training, successful participation in the Head of the River Rowing Regatta, Greek community lunches (on each campus), along with International Women’s Day and Harmony Day celebrations. I invite you to view these recent activities highlighted in this newsletter that support our students to flourish in their learning and development as global citizens. Council of International Schools (CIS) At Norwood Morialta High School we have a strong commitment to continuous improvement and we are proud to have the internationally recognised Council of International School (CIS). Early in March our school was involved in the Council of International Schools Preparatory Visit, which involved two visitors undertaking a rigorous, external review of our school to ensure we continue to meet the high international standards and identify new areas for action. These CIS visitors reviewed all aspects of our school ranging from our vision to our facilities, from our personalisation and rigour of our teaching programs to the quality of teaching and learning in our classrooms, from our policies to our financial and governance operations, as well as interviews with staff, students, parents and Governing Council members. From this intense process our feedback has been very positive and the visiting team have commended our school community for our strong improvement focus, which has driven substantial changes. We are currently awaiting the final report and will share further commendations and recommendations with our school community. 2017 Site Priorities Aligned to our school vision and pursuit for continued improvement and excellence, we have identified three key priorities for 2017 that will inform our work. These priorities include: Improving student achievement and engagement through targeted teaching and learning practices Strengthening a culture that empowers students to be resilient and to flourish. Consolidating partnerships to promote innovation and connectedness. As part of our commitment to enhancing student learning experiences our teachers engage in a range of professional development activities to improve practice. Professional Learning Teams (PLT’s) on Wednesday mornings, for example, is a valuable opportunity for teachers to collaborate to improve their pedagogy and explore a line of inquiry in the areas of Positive Education, Challenge Based Learning (including STEM) and Differentiation. Another occasion is on our Student Free Days, such as the ‘Challenge-based Learning’ session last week when our teachers learnt gained a deeper understanding of contemporary strategies to co-construct realworld learning experiences that develop future work skills and inspire students to be curious, courageous, resilient global citizens.

On another note related to site improvement I would like to advise that the 2016 NMHS Annual Report is now available on our website (at www.nmhs.sa.edu.au/ school-information/annual-reports/). This document provides our community with an overview of the school’s 2016 performance in relation to our academic achievement, attendance, student behaviour data and financial matters.

Open Night and Special Interest Programs Last week our school enjoyed another successful Open Night event, attracting over 800 visitors to tour the middle campus facilities and learn about our extensive programs. We recognise that such a showcase would not be possible without the outstanding support of our many student and staff volunteers. A special thank you to our tour guides, performers and presenters! Once again visitors were impressed by our talented students, the diverse personalised learning programs and co-curricular activities.

This event was also an opportunity to highlight our Special Interest Programs for 2018 in Accelerated STEM, Accelerated Italian and Rowing. Students and families interested in these programs are encouraged to attend the Special Interest Evening on Wednesday 12th April from 7pm.

As part of our Open Night activities we have also developed new promotional materials featuring our new branding. We visit our website (at https://www.nmhs.sa.edu.au/current-news/open-night.html ) to view our new School Information Brochure, Prospectus and Curriculum booklets.

Introducing the 2017 Governing Council The NMHS Governing Council AGM was held on 20 February, featuring an overview of the 2016 Council highlights and the election of new members. We are pleased to present the 2017 Governing Council:

Head of the River 2017 Senior Boys’ Crew Win!

Congratulations go to the senior boys’ crew who won their 2k Coxed Four event at Head of the River. The crew comprising of Zac , Isaac, Max , Josh and cox - Nicole who undertook a gruelling preparation schedule for this event with many hours spent on the water and in the Senior Campus gym developing skills and strength needed to compete in this prestigious event. This was the school’s first win at a Head of the River event since 2005 and the school’s first senior winning crew. It was a fantastic win on the day with the crew leading from start to finish. Parents, teachers and students welcomed the crew back to the bank with wild applause, cheers and a few tears! The crew will be formally acknowledged for their win at the SRC assembly which will be held early in Term 2. Once again, congratulations on behalf of the senior campus.

This year we continue to track students because we want them to succeed in the completion of SACE. We have initiated an early intervention strategy in relation to work non submission. If a student misses a deadline without negotiation before the due date, the subject teacher will send the student to the Submissions Support room for up to three lessons to complete the work to a C standard or higher. A ‘Work Non Submission Letter’ is emailed on the day to inform parents/caregivers. if the student is unable to complete the work to a satisfactory standard within the three lessons, or there is a repeat of work non submission in the same subject, the student will be withdrawn from all SACE classes and a parent/ student meeting held at the earliest possible opportunity. At this meeting the school will discuss a range of strategies and educational options to support the student.

SACE Improvement Senior Campus staff at Norwood Morialta High School are committed to supporting students to achieve success. To help students manage the workload, teachers set assessment deadlines taking into consideration the requirements of the teaching program and the learning and work demands placed on the student. Our current practice requires all students to meet deadlines. Sports Day is one of the most exciting and energetic event of the school year. It is the TIME and PLACE to showcase personal skill, talent, and physical prowess. For many, this is their opportunity to show their strengths in the sports arena, and for some, it provides an opportunity to get involved and to try. It was encouraging to witness our young people strive to achieve, and in the end, triumph. It was also inspiring to see many of them rise after a fall, learn from their mistakes, and dare to try again. The day was full of these moments where students tried and achieved greatly. I was especially moved by one student who strongly reminded me of the quote by Theodore Roosevelt.

“It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat.” Theodore Roosevelt, (April 23, 1910), “Citizenship in a Republic” As I sat among the audience, watching and cheering the students run their race, I noticed in one race, a runner who wasn’t like all the other runners, his build was different, and he was lagging behind, but he had fire, and a clear goal, to run his race and cross the finish line. It was at this moment that Theodore’s words resounded so strongly to me, the credit indeed belongs to one such as him, whose place is in the arena. I find that this quote captures the essence of not only the sporting arena but also the arenas of Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, Humanities, English, and the Arts, but most important of them all, the arena of Life and Community. My hope is that our young people today will know and experience the triumph of high achievement, and if they fail, they do so daring greatly.

HEAD OF THE RIVER – The 2017 Head of the River was a very successful day for the Norwood Morialta High School Rowing Club. It was the first time since 2011 that the Club had more than 60 rowers competing in the event so the atmosphere around the tent was great. Many crews rowed personal best times on the day and the parental support cheering our rowers on and running the BBQ was fantastic. The highlight of the day was our Senior Boys winning their Coxed Four event. This was the Club’s first win at a Head of the River event since 2005 and the Club’s first senior winning crew. It was a remarkable performance by Zac Bastick, Isaac Allum-Henson, Max Partington, Josh Telfer and cox Nicole Tainsh as they won their final by a whopping 7 seconds. It is always great to beat the likes of PAC, St Peter’s, Scotch College etc!! Well done boys on this fine achievement.

PRESENTATION DINNER – The Head of the River dinner was held at the Fogolar Furlan Centre in Felixstow later that night. This was again a very enjoyable night with excellent representation across the board. Awards were presented and there was even a best dressed competition for the rowers. QUIZ NIGHT – The quiz night was held at the Ivan Coward Hall on the Senior Campus on

March 4 and this was definitely a night that exceeded expectations. The Club fundraised $2500 and a good night was had by all. We are planning on making this an annual fundraiser event and hoping to make it bigger and better next year  Thank you to all the very generous people that made donations on the night.

YEAR 8 UPDATE – The development of the Year 8s this term has been rapid and their performance at the Head of the River was exciting. Being the future of our Club we have high expectations on what this group can produce in the coming years. A big thank you to our new Year 11 coaches who have had a big impact on the group. Not only did they motivate the group to perform at their best they were also great teachers. Well done to all Year 8s and we look forward to watching your improvement later this year and beyond.

OFF SEASON TRAINING – Off season training will take place in Term 2. We will be looking to offer one on water session and one gym session per week. Although we encourage rowers to have a well earned break, we also have an expectation that rowers maintain a solid level of fitness in preparation for pre season training. Pre-season training will commence in the second half of Term 3 and our Spring Camp will take place late in Term 3 around mid September. COACHES – A big thank you to all our coaches for the 2016/17 season. The constant improvement we see from our rowers is largely due to your impact. A special thank you to Ben O’Connell, Mariah Hatchard and Kane Zhu for the number of hours you have put into the Club and your mentoring of our younger coaches. I’m looking forward to all coaches continuing to have such a positive influence on our rowers.

PARENT COMMITTEE – Special thanks also needs to go to our wonderful parents who are involved in the Club’s Parent Committee. Without the support of these parents, events such as the Christmas BBQ, Pasta Night, Quiz Night and Presentation Dinner would not be able to go ahead. These are all great nights for members of the rowing community and also result in significant fundraising to take place. This fundraising goes towards the purchase of new equipment for our rowers. A number of parents will be leaving the Parent Committee after years of amazing service. We would like to farewell and say thank you to Paula Benson, Garry Partington, Mike Henson and Julie Allum for all your wonderful service over the years  You will not be easy to replace!

On Tuesday 28 February 26 students travelled to the SA Aquatic and Leisure Centre to participate in and officiate at the annual SSSSA Swimming Carnival. Norwood Morialta competed in E Grade, after moving up from F Grade in 2015. Competition was fierce amongst the ten schools. Our students participated in a variety of individual and relay events gaining valuable points towards the running tally of the day. Final Score Boys – 7th

On the 1st and 3rd of March 2017, the Stage 2 Physical Education students visited the University of South Australia, Mawson Lakes campus to partake in a Sport Science workshop. The workshop was aimed at developing their theoretical knowledge of Exercise Physiology including Energy Systems and Acute Responses to Exercise through practical components. Students were educated about Global Positioning Satellites (GPS) and were individually fitted up with VX Sport GPS trackers and Heart Rate monitors. In tough conditions students then engaged in a variety of activities including a long run, 70m sprints, shuttle runs, exercises and a game of Touch Football. After a short break for lunch, students returned to analyse their own data from the practical session. Students received information which included data about the distance covered, maximum speed with heart rate and average speed with heart rate. Students also received a graph of their results. They highlighted the different practical components of the session through analysing and comparing the spikes in speed and heart rate. This hands-on activity developed understanding of concepts, their ability to analyse data and also their ability to engage with technology.

This was an outstanding opportunity for students to apply some theoretical concepts to real life situations, as well as allowing students to see and experience the wide range of facilities and areas of study provided by the Uni SA Health Sciences programs. Norwood Morialta High School has maintained a sister school relationship with Takahashi Senior High School, Okayama Japan, for over 20 years. Each year an exchange between the two schools occurs. Last year, 18 students and 2 teachers from Takahashi visited our school and were hosted by NMHS families. This year we will undertake the reciprocal visit to Takahashi. This will occur during the Term 3 holidays, approximate dates from Thursday 28 September until Sunday 15 October 2017. There will be 7 days in Takahashi with homestay families and 8 days touring some famous sites in Japan in Kyoto and Tokyo. The group size will be limited to 18 students, accompanied by two staff members. We are now seeking further interested students. On Monday 6 March, the Stage 1 Visual Arts class participated in a printmaking workshop led by Printmaker and Artist Jake Holmes. The workshop was held in his workplace at “Tooth and Nail Studio”, hidden from the busy streets of the Adelaide City at Coromandel Place. The workshop was completed as part of the students’ ongoing Visual Arts Study, comparing the techniques and mediums of 4 selected Australian artists. Holmes, as an aspiring contemporary artist, had opened the studio to create a communicative, imaginative space for all artists. His screen-printing ability allows him to create many volumes of the exact artwork, useful to portray political messages, creating works to be bought on a low budget. The students very diligently participated throughout the workshop, beginning with a small self-designed artwork on paper, which was transferred to a sheet of plastic to be then etched on. Further during the workshop, they used ink and the print press to create replicas of their artwork. The workshop was a success with all students and create 2-3 prints, identifying various techniques and handling the new medium well. They thoroughly enjoyed the rare opportunity to handle and create the fantastic prints under the guidance of Jake Holmes. By Isuri Year 11 Student

On 7 March our very first DigiTech Girls class headed into Adelaide to learn more about the IT Industry and the wide variety of ways that technology skills may provide opportunities in the future. Our DigiTech Girls class is aiming to learn the importance of coding and how these skills, with women in this industry, can provide opportunities to change the way we live in the world. The DigiTech Girls class visited the Microsoft Innovation Centre in the centre of Adelaide and were addressed by Eva Balan-Vnuck, State Director of Microsoft and Nehal Jain, Program Manager for the Microsoft Innovation Centre. Eva and Nehal provided the class with an overview about Microsoft, what it’s like to work for an ICT company and not necessarily be a technologist, where the industry is moving and opportunities for new careers. There were many comments about the environment not being what they expected of an IT office. There was a lot of candy – they’d all like to work somewhere with candy! They assumed working in the IT industry be a place with a lot of people just sitting at computers – this is clearly not how Microsoft is! The excursion provided a chance to consider further how a career with IT connections will be of benefit. Microsoft provides an opportunity for its team to work in flexible workspaces with outcomes driven roles. It is certainly not about how many hours you are at work. On Friday 31 March and Monday 3 April, students studying Greek on both campuses, were involved in organizing a Greek Lunch in Celebration of Greek Independence Day celebrated on 25 March by Greeks all over the world, to mark the beginning of the Greek War for Independence in 1821. Prior to the event, students were engaged in meaningful activities about this important time in Greek history not only to extend their understanding of Greek culture but to also evaluate the significance of such historical events. Students examined key events, important leaders, as well as the role of ‘Philhellenes’ around the world to broaden their learning on the long struggle of the Greek people against the Ottoman Empire. I wish to congratulate all the students studying Modern Greek for their contribution to this event, the SRCs of both the Middle and Senior school who assisted in organizing the lunch as well as the team of students who tirelessly assisted them in their effort. Students helped in many ways including: setting up, organizing food and making Greek traditional sweets, decorating the court yard, serving and of course cleaning up afterwards. A special thank you to the leaders of both SRC teams, particularly Elias and his grandfather, Mr Hatzopoulos, staff members who assisted in the cooking process, Mr Fawcett for acting as photographer, our preservice teacher Ms Siafaris for teaching the students the associated unit of work, Mr Naylor and Ms Petric for supporting the SRC teams with this initiative. A special thank you also goes to the Year 9 and 10 Greek classes who learnt a traditional Greek dance and performed it so beautifully on the day. The atmosphere of these celebrations on both campuses, added a special buzz on the day and students and staff joined in to celebrate this event as one would do at a traditional Greek festival with good food, dance and great spirit. The message of Harmony Day is ‘everyone belongs’, and it’s purpose is to encourage people to participate in their community, to develop and strengthen their respect for cultural and religious diversity and to foster the sense of belonging for everyone. Throughout week 8, year 8 students learnt about Harmony Day by participating in a range of activities during their PLP lessons, however, the highlight by far was the Harmony Day shared lunch. On Wednesday 22 March, the Hartley Learning Community shared lunch to celebrate and taste foods from all cultural backgrounds across our year level. The spread was absolutely incredible! Staff were amazed by the amount and variety of different foods and the participation by all students. We would sincerely like to thank all families for their contributions which made this day so special for everyone in the Hartley Learning Community. I’m sure we will all look back on this event with fond memories and we can’t wait to share many more of these special occasions throughout the year. During week 4, Mr Fawcett’s year 9 Film & Visual Effects classes undertook an excursion to the Morialta Falls Park to complete a range of photos & videos for their 1st unit of work. Both excursions enjoyed excellent weather and the students were able to take a vast number of amazing photos and many videos to promote the area. Many thanks to both classes for their behaviour while on the excursion and to Ms Musolino and Ms Westerhof for being our accompanying teachers on the day. Mr Fawcett Film & Visual Effects Teacher.
