FEATURED ARTICLES S.E.L. & SPECIAL EDUCATION By April Adams, on behalf of the Special Education Department

“One child, one teacher, one nook, and one pen can change the world. - Malala Yousafzai

S

EL (or Social, Emotional Learning) and Special Ed students make a good match. Many high school students who are striving to earn respectable grades often struggle emotionally from week to week with the ongoing stress of passing A-G courses. The students who work with Mrs. April Adams and Mrs. Julie Williams in Directed Studies are not exempt from feeling inundated by overlapping tests, projects, and assignments. Sometimes they respond with emotional meltdowns- defeated before they’ve begun. However, with the help of SEL, or a focus on being mindful and in the present, students are asked to participate at the beginning of each Directed Studies period with 3 to 5 minutes of Deep Breathing. Several students have commented on the fact that just a few moments of quiet and deep breathing allows them to “distress”, relaxing tense shoulders and calm overwhelming thoughts. The students are clearly much calmer and better able to focus when involved in this daily practice. (Interestingly, several students now request a “breathing session” if we sometimes forget!) A few minutes of daily quiet and deep breathing lends itself to a better emotional state for each student- including those with ADHD, resulting in an enhanced learning environment for all. Social learning is also addressed in 10th Grade Directed Studies. In each class period there is a with a “Student of the Week” bulletin board. Students are asked to write positive affirmations for peers and staff with the goal of building a supportive and welcoming class for every student. With a focus on emotional and social mindfulness, students learn gratitude along with effectively gaining the ability to better regulate their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors.
